Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To reinstall a Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter driver in Windows, uninstall the affected adapter in Device Manager and restart your PC. Windows will try to detect and reinstall its driver. Before uninstalling, save a suitable driver from your PC or adapter manufacturer so you can install it if Windows does not restore a working connection.
Before you uninstall the network adapter
Get a backup driver first, especially if the adapter you are troubleshooting is your PC’s only way to connect to the internet. Microsoft advises having a driver available before uninstalling one. Find your PC’s manufacturer and model, then download the matching network driver from the manufacturer’s support site. If the affected PC is offline, download the driver on another computer and transfer it with a USB flash drive.
Choose a driver intended for your exact PC model or network adapter and Windows version. Keep the installer somewhere you can reach after the restart, such as the PC’s Downloads folder or the USB drive.
Reinstall the adapter driver in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager. Search for Device Manager from the taskbar and open it.
- Find the adapter. Expand Network adapters and identify the Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter you are troubleshooting.
- Uninstall its driver. Select the adapter, choose Uninstall device, and follow the on-screen prompts. On some Wi-Fi devices or Windows builds, a checkbox may appear to attempt to remove the driver for the device; it may not appear everywhere.
- Restart the PC. Microsoft recommends restarting after uninstalling. Windows will look for and attempt to install the network adapter driver.
- Test the connection. Check whether Wi-Fi or Ethernet works after Windows starts again.
These steps reinstall a device driver; they do not reinstall Windows.

If Windows does not restore a working connection
Install the driver you saved
Run the manufacturer’s driver installer you downloaded before uninstalling. If you saved it to a USB flash drive, connect that drive to the affected PC and open the installer. Follow its instructions, then check the connection again.
Ask Windows to detect hardware again
If the adapter is still listed but Windows has not restored it, open Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes. Windows may detect the adapter and reinstall its driver. Device Manager can also request a driver location in some cases; if the driver is not available locally, Microsoft directs users to the hardware vendor’s website.

If the adapter is missing from Device Manager
If you cannot find the adapter under Network adapters, uninstalling a listed driver is not an option and may not address the cause. Check whether Windows detects the hardware elsewhere in Device Manager, and consult the PC or adapter manufacturer’s support information for your exact model. Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance explains how to interpret device errors.
When to use Network reset instead
Network reset is broader than reinstalling one adapter driver. It removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters after a restart with default settings. It is best treated as a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to one driver problem. Microsoft recommends starting Wi-Fi troubleshooting with Get Help in Windows 11 and places Network reset after simpler steps.

| Approach | What it changes | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall one adapter driver and restart | Targets the selected adapter; Windows attempts to reinstall its driver. A saved manufacturer driver is the fallback. | Use for a problem tied to one Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter. |
| Network reset | Removes installed adapters and their settings, then restores adapters with default settings after restart. Known network profiles may change; VPN clients and Hyper-V virtual switches may need setup again. | Consider only after narrower troubleshooting steps have not helped. |
