In the United States, whether you must register a DJI Mini 5 Pro depends on why you are flying and the aircraft’s actual takeoff weight. Recreational flyers may qualify for the FAA’s registration exception only when flying solely for recreation with a drone weighing 0.55 lb or less (less than 250 g). Part 107 operations require registration regardless of weight. DJI lists the Mini 5 Pro at approximately 249.9 ± 4 g, so the model name alone does not establish that your aircraft is exempt.

Choose the right FAA operating category first

U.S. rules distinguish recreational flying from operations under Part 107. The purpose of the flight—not the drone’s size or whether you are paid—determines which category applies. The FAA’s recreational exception is limited to flights solely for hobby or recreation. Work, business, or other non-recreational operations generally require Part 107 compliance.

If you fly under Part 107, you need a Remote Pilot Certificate with a small UAS rating, or you must operate under the direct supervision of a certificated pilot. A drone registered for recreational use cannot be flown under Part 107; registration is not transferable between the two operation types. See the FAA’s Part 107 guidance.

Does a Mini 5 Pro need registration?

For recreational flying, the FAA registration exception applies only to aircraft weighing 0.55 lb or less (less than 250 g). If your Mini 5 Pro’s actual takeoff weight is at or above that threshold, register it. For Part 107, register each drone regardless of weight. The FAA’s drone registration guidance explains the requirements.

DJI’s Mini 5 Pro User Manual gives an approximate weight of 249.9 ± 4 g and says the actual weight should be based on the delivered product. That range crosses 250 g. Weigh the aircraft in the configuration you intend to fly; added equipment or configuration changes may affect takeoff weight. Do not assume every Mini 5 Pro qualifies for the recreational exception because of its advertised or nominal weight.

How to register the drone

Use the FAA’s FAADroneZone to register. The FAA lists a $5 fee and a three-year registration period for the registration options described in its guidance. The registration process asks for contact details, the drone’s make and model, applicable Remote ID serial information, and payment information.

  1. Select the operating category. Choose recreational registration only if you will operate under the recreational exception. For Part 107, register each aircraft individually.
  2. Complete the registration in FAADroneZone. Follow the FAA’s prompts and provide the requested aircraft and pilot information.
  3. Mark the aircraft. Once registered, label the drone with its registration number.
  4. Keep proof available. Have the registration certificate available while flying.

For Part 107 registration, the FAA requires each drone to be registered regardless of weight. Recreational registration, by contrast, covers the pilot’s inventory when registration is required for recreational flying.

Pass TRUST for recreational flights

Recreational flyers operating under the exception must take and pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) and carry proof of passage. FAA-approved test administrators provide the online test free. Save, download, or print the certificate; if you lose it, the FAA says you must take the test again. Start with the FAA TRUST page.

Check Remote ID for your exact aircraft

The FAA requires drones that must be registered or are registered—including recreational aircraft—to comply with Remote ID, subject to applicable exceptions and compliance pathways. The FAA advises pilots to confirm that the exact drone or broadcast module appears in its accepted Declaration of Compliance system. Its Remote ID guidance explains the requirements.

For inventory, recreational flyers add each Standard Remote ID drone and/or applicable broadcast module; Part 107 pilots register each individual device separately. The cited FAA guidance and DJI manual do not establish a definite Remote ID status for every U.S. Mini 5 Pro unit or configuration. Check the current FAA declaration and DJI’s model-specific instructions, including which serial number to enter, rather than assuming the answer from the model name.

If a drone lacks Remote ID equipment, the FAA describes an alternative: fly within an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA), keeping the aircraft within visual line of sight and inside the defined area. Verify that the site is an actual FRIA and that the flight meets all other rules.

Recreational flights

The FAA’s recreational conditions include flying only for hobby or recreational purposes, following a community-based organization safety guideline, maintaining visual line of sight, yielding to manned aircraft, and obtaining authorization before operating in controlled airspace. A registration exemption does not give permission to enter controlled airspace or fly beyond visual line of sight. Check the FAA’s recreational flyer rules and current airspace authorization requirements before each flight.

Part 107 flights

The FAA’s Part 107 summary lists a 400-foot altitude limit, with an allowance near certain structures; a maximum speed of 100 mph; minimum visibility of three statute miles; and daylight operations from 30 minutes before official sunrise until 30 minutes after official sunset. Twilight operations are allowed with anti-collision lighting. Operators must also avoid manned aircraft, maintain visual line of sight, avoid careless or reckless operation, and comply with rules for operations over people and moving vehicles. Exceptions and waivers can apply, so consult the current rule and FAA guidance rather than treating this summary as a complete substitute.

Before-flight compliance checklist

  • Identify whether the flight is solely recreational or falls under Part 107.
  • For recreational registration, check the actual takeoff weight and whether it is less than 250 g.
  • If registration is required, use the correct registration category and label the aircraft.
  • For recreational flying, pass TRUST and carry proof.
  • Confirm Remote ID compliance or a valid FRIA operating route for the exact aircraft and configuration.
  • Check airspace authorization and the operating rules for the flight you intend to make.

This is U.S. federal guidance. Registration and operating rules differ by country; outside the United States, check the relevant national aviation authority.
