Whether you need to register a DJI Flip depends on where and how you fly it—not just its weight. DJI lists the Flip’s takeoff weight as below 249 g, but the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union apply different rules to lightweight camera drones. Start with your country’s aviation authority, then check the rules for your exact aircraft and flight location.

Why the DJI Flip’s weight does not settle the question

DJI lists the Flip’s takeoff weight as below 249 g in its official specifications. That is manufacturer-stated product information, not a universal exemption from aviation rules. Regulators may distinguish between recreational and other operations, account for a camera or sensor, or use an aircraft class marking. Your actual configuration and the rules where you fly matter.

Registration is also only one part of compliance. You may have separate requirements for pilot competence, Remote ID, where you can fly, and how close you may operate to people. The examples below cover the United States, the United Kingdom, and EU-level EASA guidance; they are not a complete guide to every country or local area.

How the rules differ by jurisdiction

Jurisdiction and regulator When registration applies to a DJI Flip Pilot qualification or ID Remote ID and other key limits
United States — FAA The FAA exempts drones weighing 0.55 pounds or less (less than 250 g) from registration when flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. The exemption is not a general exemption for every type of operation. Requirements depend on the operating framework. The cited FAA registration guidance does not establish the full qualification requirements. Drones that must be registered or are registered—including recreational, business, and public-safety aircraft—must comply with Remote ID. An aircraft registered under the recreational exception cannot be flown under Part 107.
United Kingdom — CAA The CAA requires both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID for a 100 g to under 250 g drone with a camera. The Flyer ID is a competence credential obtained by passing the CAA theory test. The Operator ID identifies the person responsible for managing the aircraft. Remote ID start dates depend on UK aircraft class: 1 January 2028 for UK0 camera drones weighing at least 100 g; 1 January 2026 for UK1, UK2, and UK3 aircraft. The Flip’s class marking is not established by its weight alone.
European Union — EASA-level guidance An operator must register when operating a drone with a camera or sensor, unless it is a toy, even if it weighs less than 250 g. Check the applicable member-state authority for national procedures and any pilot requirements. C0-marked drones and qualifying privately built aircraft up to 250 g may operate in the A1 subcategory, but A1 does not permit flight over assemblies of people or in nationally restricted areas.

United States: the under-250 g exemption is limited

The FAA registration guidance exempts drones weighing 0.55 pounds or less (less than 250 g) from registration when flown under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. The Flip’s stated weight falls below that threshold, but the exemption applies to that recreational framework—not automatically to every use.

The FAA says drones registered under the recreational exception cannot be flown under Part 107. It also says drones that must be registered or are registered, including recreational, business, and public-safety aircraft, must comply with Remote ID. If you plan to operate under Part 107 or another framework, check the FAA’s current rules for that operation rather than relying on the recreational weight exemption.

United Kingdom: a camera Flip in this weight range needs two IDs

The UK CAA’s registration guidance says a drone weighing 100 g to under 250 g with a camera requires both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The pilot obtains a Flyer ID by passing the CAA theory test; the Operator ID belongs to the person responsible for managing the aircraft. The CAA says it does not recognise overseas registrations or qualifications for UK flying, so visitors should check UK requirements too.

The CAA’s Drone and Model Aircraft Code says anyone flying a drone over 100 g needs a Flyer ID. It also explains that the aircraft’s class and operating category affect where and how close to people it may fly. As the CAA puts it: “You’re responsible for flying safely and legally whenever you fly.” — The Drone and Model Aircraft Code (CAP2320, March 2026).

Remote ID timing depends on the Flip’s class, not weight alone. The CAA lists 1 January 2028 for UK0 camera drones weighing 100 g or more and 1 January 2026 for UK1, UK2, and UK3 aircraft in its Remote ID guidance. The sources cited here do not establish the class marking of every DJI Flip unit. Check the marking on your aircraft and its regional documentation; do not infer a UK class from the sub-250 g weight.

European Union: camera registration and class markings matter

At the EASA guidance level, an operator must register a drone with a camera or sensor unless it is a toy, even below 250 g. EASA’s open-category guidance describes C0-marked drones and qualifying privately built aircraft up to 250 g as eligible for A1 subcategory operations.

A1 does not allow flight over assemblies of people or in nationally restricted areas. Do not assume a DJI Flip is C0-marked solely because it weighs under 250 g: verify the marking on the aircraft or package and consult the applicable regional documentation. For national registration steps and local restrictions, check the aviation authority and airspace information for the specific member state.

Check these details before your first flight

  1. Identify the country and precise flight location. Find the official aviation authority and check its current airspace map or location guidance; national rules do not tell you every local restriction.
  2. Check your exact aircraft. Confirm its actual takeoff configuration and any class marking on the aircraft or package. Weight alone does not establish a class.
  3. Choose the operating framework. Determine whether you will fly recreationally or under a commercial or other operating category. This can change whether a weight-based exemption applies.
  4. Check both operator and pilot requirements. Find out whether the responsible operator must register and whether the remote pilot needs a test, certificate, or other qualification.
  5. Confirm Remote ID timing and applicability. Check the current rules for your jurisdiction and, where relevant, your aircraft’s class.
  6. Review flight restrictions before takeoff. Check rules for people and crowds, restricted areas, privacy, and any required permissions.
