Steam’s standard terms cover a request made within 14 days of purchase when you have played the game for less than two hours. If you are outside either limit, you can still ask Steam to review your request, but approval is not guaranteed.
Steam’s refund limits for a game that performs poorly
Steam’s standard refund terms require both conditions: the purchase was made within the last 14 days, and total playtime is less than two hours. Steam counts online, offline, and shared-library playtime. See Steam’s refund policy for the current terms.

Poor performance can be the reason you give, but Steam does not list it as a separate automatic exception to the time and playtime limits. If the game has persistently low frame rates, stutters, or will not launch, describe what happens accurately rather than assuming the issue qualifies you for an exception.
How to request a Steam refund
- Sign in to Steam Support.
- Open Purchases and select the transaction for the game.
- Choose the option that best describes the problem, then select the refund request option.
- Complete and submit the form. Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method where that option is available. Steam’s refund instructions explain the process.
In the explanation, state the symptom and any relevant steps you have already tried. Keep it factual and concise. If you are close to either limit, submit the request promptly; repeatedly launching the game to collect more evidence adds playtime.

If you have passed 14 days or two hours
You can still submit a request through Steam Support if you do not meet the standard conditions. Steam says it will review requests outside those limits, but that is an opportunity for review, not a promise of approval. Explain the performance problem and relevant troubleshooting without suggesting that poor performance automatically overrides the limits.
Should you troubleshoot before requesting a refund?
Troubleshooting is optional, not a prerequisite for asking for a refund. If you have time within the standard limits and want to check whether the cause is settings or system load, Steam’s performance guide suggests checking the game’s system requirements, closing unnecessary background programs, freeing memory, updating drivers, choosing a suitable resolution, and lowering graphics settings. Meeting a game’s listed requirements does not guarantee high frame rates or smooth performance.

For a Valve game, Steam describes hardware auto-detection and a launch option that restores reasonable video settings. For a third-party game, unresolved resolution or configuration problems may need the developer’s help; the game’s Library page includes a Support link. Avoid spending hours testing fixes if doing so could take you past the playtime limit.

Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear. A refund to Steam Wallet may arrive within 24–48 hours, while international payment methods can take longer.
