How do I refund a PC game that won’t run?
Open a refund request with the storefront shown on your receipt or bank statement. If you bought a key from a reseller, contact that seller: a game launching through Steam or Epic does not mean that storefront took your payment or controls the refund.
When a game fails to launch, explain what happens and include the exact error text, your Windows version, and relevant graphics hardware details. List troubleshooting steps you have already tried. Keep the request factual and submit it as soon as possible; the details help support understand the issue but do not guarantee approval.

Steam: request through Steam Support
Valve’s standard rule is a request within 14 days and less than two hours of playtime. That playtime includes online, offline, and shared-library play. The policy explicitly covers cases such as a PC that does not meet hardware requirements, an accidental purchase, or simply not liking the game. Valve says approved refunds are generally issued within a week, to the original payment method when possible or to Steam Wallet if that method cannot be used.

To submit a request, go to Steam Support, sign in, select the purchase, and follow the refund options. If you are outside the ordinary window or playtime limit, you can still ask Valve to review it; an exception is possible, not promised.
Epic Games Store: check the label and runtime
Epic’s policy applies to purchases made through Epic checkout. Eligible PC and Mac products must be labeled “refundable” or “self-refundable,” requested within the applicable 14-day period, and have less than two hours of runtime. For an eligible self-refundable purchase, sign in to your Epic account, open Transactions, select the purchase, and choose “Refund.” Purchases made outside Epic checkout follow the seller’s policy. Epic also notes that consumer withdrawal rights may apply in the EU; those rights and any waiver depend on the jurisdiction and purchase circumstances.

GOG: contact support about technical trouble
GOG’s voluntary policy permits a refund request within 30 days. For technical problems, contact GOG Support during that period and give support a chance to address the issue. GOG states that if it cannot help solve the problem, it will offer a full refund. This is the stated technical-support process, not an unconditional guarantee for every reason someone may be dissatisfied.
Microsoft Store or Xbox PC: check your order
For a purchase charged by Microsoft, use the official Xbox refund information and your Microsoft order history to see the current instructions for that transaction. The available support information does not establish a specific refund window or runtime threshold here.

Can I get a refund if I just don’t like the game?
It depends on the store’s policy and whether your purchase meets its conditions. Steam explicitly includes disliking a game among the examples covered by its standard refund process, subject to its 14-day and under-two-hour limits. Epic’s eligibility conditions still apply, including the refundable label. GOG’s cited policy establishes a 30-day request period, but its technical-support statement does not establish that any dissatisfaction request will be accepted.
What if I played for more than two hours?
On Steam, the usual two-hour threshold may no longer be met, but Valve invites you to submit an out-of-window request for review; it does not guarantee an exception. Epic’s stated PC and Mac eligibility requires under two hours of runtime. GOG’s cited policy gives a 30-day request window and describes troubleshooting for technical problems; it does not state a playtime threshold. Check the current policy for the store and transaction before assuming that one store’s limit applies to another.

What should I include in the refund request?
- Order or transaction reference, purchase date, and game name.
- A short, accurate description of what failed or differed from what you expected.
- The exact error message, if there is one.
- Your Windows version and relevant system details, such as graphics hardware.
- Troubleshooting steps you have already attempted.
Ask for a refund under the seller’s policy, and avoid repeatedly launching the game while resolving the issue if the store counts runtime. On Steam, even offline and shared-library playtime counts toward its threshold.

Are these refund limits legal rights?
The windows above describe store policies, not a single rule that applies to every PC game purchase. Rules can vary by country, purchase channel, and transaction. Epic notes that EU consumers may have statutory withdrawal rights and that buyers may be asked to waive those rights when purchasing.
