Nintendo’s U.S. policy makes digital purchases final unless Nintendo approves an exception or the law requires a refund. Start the request promptly, and check the policy for your country and purchase type. A refund for a past subscription payment is different from canceling future renewal.

These are not interchangeable rules. In particular, do not assume Steam’s two-hour standard applies to Xbox, or that starting a download has the same effect on every store.
How to request a PlayStation Store refund
The following steps and standard game criteria are from PlayStation’s U.S. refund guide. Local policies can differ.

- Open your PlayStation account’s Transaction History.
- Select the eligible transaction, choose Request Refund, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the option is unavailable or you cannot complete the request, contact PlayStation Support. PlayStation’s online assistant can also help check eligibility.
For a full game or DLC, the U.S. guide lists a 14-day request window and requires that you have not downloaded or streamed the content, unless it is faulty. Pre-orders, in-game consumables, and subscriptions follow separate rules: automatic downloads or preloads can affect a pre-order request; consumables generally must be requested within 14 days and before launching the game after purchase; and a subscription refund is limited to the first payment within 14 days of sign-up, with use potentially reducing the refund. Check the relevant section of PlayStation’s guide for the purchase type.
Country matters. For example, PlayStation’s Canada cancellation policy says additional rights under local law may apply. Do not treat the U.S. guide as a worldwide guarantee.

How to request an Xbox digital-game refund
Microsoft directs Xbox customers to its digital-games refund page, which links to the Xbox refund request portal. Sign in and check the purchase there; eligibility can depend on the item and account, and the exact Xbox-specific time or playtime threshold is not stated in the cited support instructions.
Microsoft’s general Microsoft Store instructions say to sign in, select the item, choose Request a refund, explain the reason, and submit. Online returns are unavailable in some markets. Microsoft says a request may take up to 72 hours to process; after approval, a refund generally takes 3–5 business days to reach the original payment option. These are Microsoft’s general processing estimates, not a promise that an Xbox request will be approved.

What to expect from Nintendo eShop
Nintendo of America’s U.S. digital-products policy says payments through Nintendo Account services—including pre-purchases and subscription payments—are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. The policy does not describe a general change-of-mind refund process.
If you believe your situation qualifies for an exception or local law gives you additional rights, contact Nintendo Support. A request is not a guarantee of approval. The cited policy is for Nintendo of America; check the terms that apply in your country.

How Steam refunds work
- Open Steam’s refund policy and follow the link to Steam Support.
- Select the purchase, submit the refund request, and provide the requested details.
For a game or software app, Valve’s standard terms are a request within two weeks of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. The conditions are separate: meeting the playtime limit does not extend the 14-day window. Valve says requests outside the standard rules can still be submitted for review, but that does not mean they will be approved.
DLC has its own conditions, including a 14-day window and less than two hours played in the underlying game since buying the DLC; some DLC that has been consumed, modified, or transferred is excluded. Pre-release purchases have a different start point for the 14-day window, and Early Access playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Check the matching section of Valve’s policy for those cases.

Valve says approved refunds are issued within a week, to the original payment method where supported or to Steam Wallet if the original method cannot receive the refund. Its policy page was last updated April 23, 2024, so confirm the live terms when applying.

- Identify the store, country, and purchase type; a game, DLC, pre-order, consumable, and subscription may have different terms.
- For PlayStation, avoid downloading or streaming content while checking eligibility if you have not already done so.
- For Steam, check both the purchase date and playtime. For Xbox, rely on the live portal rather than an assumed threshold.
- Save the transaction details and follow the store’s account-specific request flow. A policy’s standard criteria do not guarantee approval.
- If you want to stop future subscription billing, cancel renewal separately; that does not by itself refund a past charge.
