To refactor code in IntelliJ IDEA, select the symbol or code fragment, open Refactor This with Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T on the documented default Windows/Linux keymap, and choose the operation that matches the change. Preview broad changes, inspect conflicts, then review the edited code and run your project’s checks. IntelliJ’s refactorings update code structure and references; they do not prove that the application still behaves as intended.

The steps below follow JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 Help. Shortcuts are defaults for the listed keymap and may differ by operating system or customization. JetBrains’ refactoring overview has the operation list and undo guidance.

Choose the refactoring that matches your intended change

Refactoring means restructuring source code without changing application behavior. JetBrains describes it as “updating the source code without changing the behaviour of the application” in its JavaScript refactoring documentation. The operation matters: renaming, extracting logic, moving a member, and changing a method contract affect different code and references.

Goal Use What it changes
Change an identifier and update references Rename A symbol, file, directory, package, or module name and applicable references in code.
Give a cohesive code fragment a name Extract Method Creates a method from selected code and replaces the fragment with a call.
Relocate a member Move Moves a supported code element, such as a static method, to a destination class.
Change a callable’s parameters or exceptions Change Signature Updates the method contract and related calls.
Remove an unused declaration Safe Delete Checks for source-code references before removal.

For extracting a value rather than a method, IntelliJ also provides Introduce Variable, Extract Constant, Extract Field, and Extract Parameter. Inline is available to reverse certain extractions or remove an indirection. Choose based on the structural change you intend, not just the shortcut you remember.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Open the refactoring menu or run a dedicated action

Select a file or folder in the Project tool window, or place the caret on a symbol or select an expression in the editor. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T to open Refactor This, then select the operation. You can also invoke a dedicated refactoring directly. On JetBrains’ documented default Windows/Linux keymap, common shortcuts are:

Operation Default shortcut
Safe Delete Alt+Delete
Copy / Move F5 / F6
Extract Method Ctrl+Alt+M
Extract Constant Ctrl+Alt+C
Extract Field Ctrl+Alt+F
Extract Parameter Ctrl+Alt+P
Introduce Variable Ctrl+Alt+V
Rename Shift+F6
Inline Ctrl+Alt+N
Change Signature Ctrl+F6

If a shortcut does not work, use Refactor This or find the action in IntelliJ IDEA’s menus and confirm the shortcut for your keymap. The general refactoring page documents these default shortcuts and operations.

Rename a method and update its usages

  1. Place the caret on the method name and invoke Rename with Shift+F6 on the documented default Windows/Linux keymap, or choose it from Refactor This.
  2. Enter the new name and review the proposed scope. Rename can also apply to other supported elements, including classes, files, directories, packages, and modules.
  3. For a public method or class, inspect the preview in the Find tool window before confirming. Check which usages will change and whether the listed references are the ones you intend to update.
  4. Confirm the refactoring, inspect the affected code, and run relevant project checks.

Rename is code-aware: it updates references in code rather than simply changing matching text. For details on supported targets and previews, see JetBrains’ Rename refactorings documentation.

Extract a method from selected code

  1. Select the statements or expression that form a coherent unit, then invoke Extract Method with Ctrl+Alt+M on the documented default Windows/Linux keymap.
  2. Review the proposed method name, parameters, and return value in the refactoring dialog. IntelliJ detects a single output variable as the return value.
  3. Confirm the extraction and examine both the new method and the replacement call at the original location.
  4. Run the tests or other checks that exercise the changed behavior.

Automatic extraction has documented limits: generic-type references and multiple output variables can prevent the operation from working automatically. In those cases, adjust the selection or refactor the code manually, then verify the result. See JetBrains’ Extract method documentation.

Change a method signature and update calls

  1. Place the caret on the method and invoke Change Signature with Ctrl+F6 on the documented default Windows/Linux keymap.
  2. Edit the method name, parameters, or exceptions as needed. The operation supports adding, removing, reordering, and renaming parameters.
  3. Where applicable, choose to propagate parameters or exceptions through the call hierarchy.
  4. Review the affected declarations and call sites, resolve any reported conflicts, and confirm.
  5. Inspect the resulting code and run relevant checks.

Some conversions involving method contracts may fail or require manual adjustment. A signature change can alter more than the declaration: verify the callers and any affected implementations or contracts. See JetBrains’ Change signature documentation.

Move a method or other code element

Use Move when the goal is to change where a code element belongs, rather than rename it or alter its parameters. For a static method, the documented workflow lets you choose a destination class and preview the result before proceeding.

Use Safe Delete and review before committing

Safe Delete checks whether source-code references remain before removing a declaration. It is a useful safeguard, not a substitute for understanding the results: review the references and any warnings before confirming. For broad changes, especially renames and moves across files, inspect the preview and resolve conflicts rather than accepting changes blindly.

For capturing a page screenshot rather than changing code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
