Keep provider-specific code behind an internal boundary, retain control of portable assets, test a real migration to a defined fallback, and secure data and transition rights in your contracts. These steps preserve credible options; they do not make different models interchangeable or guarantee the same outputs after a switch.
How do I avoid vendor lock-in when building with AI models?
Start by deciding what you would move to if your current service no longer met your needs. A second hosted API, a self-hosted model, another cloud environment, and a non-AI workflow are different exit targets with different quality, cost, latency, privacy, and operating requirements. Choose a fallback that your team could realistically use, rather than treating portability as an abstract goal.
Then design and test for that specific move. Lock-in can accumulate in application code, model files and architecture, data and derived artifacts, runtime assumptions, and contract rights. A standard API or file format can help with one layer while leaving the others untouched.
| Layer | Where dependence can build | Practical control |
|---|---|---|
| API and application code | Provider SDK calls, request and response formats, authentication, retries, rate limits, and provider-specific tools or features. | Put provider calls behind a narrow internal adapter; keep special features explicit rather than pretending every provider supports them alike. |
| Model and artifacts | Weights alone may not be enough: architecture details and compatible execution support also affect whether a model can run elsewhere. | Record the artifacts, architecture information, license, and target-runtime requirements needed for the chosen fallback. |
| Data and derived work | Prompts, retrieval settings, evaluation sets, schemas, transformations, logs, and model-related outputs may be difficult to recover or reuse. | Keep assets you control in accessible repositories and storage; document their provenance, rights, retention, and deletion obligations. |
| Runtime and infrastructure | A model or application can depend on a particular runtime, operator set, hardware environment, or cloud service. | Test the intended target environment, including execution and operational requirements, instead of relying on a format or endpoint label. |
| Commercial and legal terms | Usage restrictions, data rights, retention, export, deletion, termination, and transition assistance can constrain an exit even when the technology is portable. | Review these rights separately from technical capability and negotiate close-out and migration provisions before adoption. |
AI-specific secure development is also a lifecycle concern, not just an architectural one. NIST’s SP 800-218A, published July 26, 2024, extends secure software development practices with guidance for generative AI and dual-use foundation models and is intended for AI producers and acquirers. Use that lifecycle perspective to revisit exit assumptions as the system changes.

Can I switch AI model providers later?
Usually, a provider change is possible, but it is a migration rather than a drop-in replacement. Even if two endpoints accept similar requests, their available capabilities, response behavior, limits, and model quality may differ. An application that relies on a provider’s particular tools or response fields may need changes, and a model change can alter task performance or failure patterns.
Keep a narrow internal model-provider boundary
In application code, centralize vendor SDK usage, authentication, retries, rate-limit handling, and response parsing behind an internal adapter. Define neutral request and response types for the features the application actually uses. If a provider-specific capability is important, expose it as an explicit extension with a clear dependency, rather than hiding it behind a supposedly universal interface.
This boundary makes provider changes easier to isolate and test; it does not establish feature or output equivalence. Avoid normalizing away information the application needs, and avoid building a large abstraction for hypothetical providers before you know what capabilities matter.

Version the application-side assets
Keep prompts, retrieval configuration, policy instructions, evaluation data, schemas, and application-side transformations in repositories and storage your organization can access independently of the model service. Record provenance and access rights, as well as retention and deletion obligations for both training and inference data. These assets often encode behavior and business rules that are not contained in an API request alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProve the move with a migration exercise
- Name the target. Select the second API, self-hosted model, cloud environment, or non-AI process that represents a credible fallback.
- Export representative inputs and artifacts. Include the data and model-related files the target would actually need, subject to applicable rights and retention rules.
- Load and run them on the target. Verify that the intended runtime can execute the model or that the replacement API supports the required interaction.
- Replay a versioned evaluation suite. Use representative cases, including edge cases and known failure modes, rather than a few favorable examples.
- Compare what matters for the workload. Record task quality and failures, latency, cost at realistic volume, and the operational effort needed to deploy and maintain the alternative.
A successful export is not by itself proof of a successful migration: the destination must run the artifacts and meet the application’s requirements. Revisit this exercise when changing model versions, adding provider-specific tools or fine-tuning, or renewing a service.
Does an OpenAI-compatible API prevent lock-in?
No. A compatible request shape can reduce some integration work, but it does not guarantee that providers implement the same capabilities, limits, semantics, or model behavior. The term describes an API compatibility claim, not an assurance that an application will switch without changes or that results will remain equivalent. Test the exact features your application uses against the intended destination.

The same distinction applies to model file formats. ONNX provides a versioned intermediate representation with operator sets and extensibility, which can support distribution and execution across environments. However, a model may rely on extensions or operators that a destination runtime does not support. The ONNX IR specification defines representation and execution interoperability; it does not standardize hosted LLM API semantics, provider contracts, data governance, or model quality. Check current IR and opset compatibility, then convert and execute on the runtime you intend to use.
Are open-weight models portable?
Sometimes, but “open-weight” alone does not answer whether a model is portable for your use. A model is more than its weight files: architecture metadata and compatible execution support matter. You also need to confirm that you have the artifacts and rights needed for your intended use. Do not infer access to source code, training data, unrestricted commercial use, or complete reproducibility from an openness label.
The OECD describes openness as a continuum and notes that there is no consensus on exactly which components constitute an “open-source” AI model. Its 2024 analysis of data access and sharing in the age of AI discusses model parameters, architecture dependence, and possible distribution formats. The NTIA’s 2024 report on widely available model weights distinguishes limited-access models by lack of access to weights, source code, or training data; that distinction does not mean every model described as open provides all those components.

Test the artifact on the hardware and runtime you expect to operate. Treat license and access conditions as part of portability, not as a separate afterthought.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should AI procurement and contracts cover?
Technical access does not guarantee the right or practical ability to take data and derived products with you. Review legal terms separately from technical compatibility. The OECD’s 2025 guidance on governing with AI addresses public-sector procurement, vendor lock-in protections, and continued access to data or derived products at close-out. Its public-sector context is especially relevant to public buyers; organizations elsewhere can use the same issues as a contract checklist, adapted to their circumstances.
- Data and derived products: Specify what you can retrieve, in what usable form, and what rights apply to data, logs, outputs, evaluations, and other products created through the service.
- Retention and training: Record whether submitted data is retained or used for training, how long it is held, and what deletion obligations apply.
- Export and deletion: Define export procedures, formats, timing, deletion steps, and any evidence of deletion the provider will supply.
- Termination and transition: Set out notice periods, migration timing, close-out support, and any costs or service dependencies that affect an orderly exit.
- Model and service terms: Check commercial-use permissions, model-use restrictions, license conditions, and the provider’s rights and obligations as services or models change.
Cloud services can provide scalable infrastructure and access to AI capabilities, but that does not remove the need to address exit rights and data access. Self-hosting is not automatically cheaper or safer: it shifts responsibility for runtime, hardware, operations, and security to the organization. Choose based on the workload, risk, and the team’s ability to operate the fallback.

How should I compare realistic alternatives?
Compare alternatives against the same workload and the same evaluation cases. No single option is best for every application; operational capacity, risk, and the consequences of failure affect the right trade-off.
- Quality and failure behavior: Evaluate representative tasks, edge cases, and unacceptable failure modes rather than relying on a model label or demo.
- Cost and latency: Estimate total cost at realistic volume and measure response times under conditions relevant to the application.
- Availability and operations: Assess service availability and the effort your team can sustain to deploy, monitor, and maintain an alternative.
- Data handling: Compare retention, data-use terms, geography, export, deletion, and access to logs or evaluation evidence.
- Portability and rights: Check whether model artifacts and data can move to the target, whether the license permits the intended use, and what the contract allows at termination.
- Runtime fit: Verify the required software, operators, and hardware are supported in the destination environment.
Record the assumptions behind the comparison so that a later change in workload, model version, service terms, or team capacity triggers a review rather than an unexpected lock-in problem.
