Start by identifying the problem and reviewing what grew in the field before choosing among options such as solarization, steam, anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD), or cover crops. Evidence is strongest here for California strawberries; raspberry recommendations discussed below are specific to caneberries and regional extension guidance, not a universal recipe for every berry crop.
Start with the crop, pest, and field history
“Soil pests” can mean soilborne pathogens, nematodes, weeds, or insects. A treatment that helps with one target may do little against another. Identify the crop and production system, determine which pest is present, and review the field’s prior crops and disease history before committing time, water, plastic, or other inputs. For farm-level decisions, local crop and pest identification and region-specific extension advice matter.
Build prevention into the plan
For strawberries, UC Statewide IPM’s Strawberry Pest Management Guidelines emphasize sanitation and prevention in nonfumigated production. Use planting material appropriate to the field and production conditions, and clean soil from tractors, tools, and other equipment before moving between fields to reduce the risk of spreading soilborne pathogens. UC IPM also describes cultivar choice as especially important in nonfumigated soils: select varieties suited to local conditions and the pathogens known to be present.
Use crop history to screen raspberry sites
Penn State Extension’s Raspberry Production guidance advises avoiding recent fields with susceptible crop histories. After specified Verticillium-susceptible crops, it recommends five to eight years in a crop that is not susceptible to Verticillium before planting raspberries; oats and wheat are examples of grass-family rotation crops in that context. This is a regional, crop-specific recommendation, not a general rotation interval for all berries or pests.

Compare nonfumigant options before choosing one
The options differ in what they target and what they require. A method should not be called a substitute for fumigation unless it fits the specific crop, pest, and site.
| Option | Where it may fit | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Soil solarization | Some soilborne disease organisms and viable weed seeds, where summer soil heating is adequate; described by UC IPM for strawberry systems. | Clear plastic over pre-shaped beds during hot weather. UC IPM cites 30–45 days with soil at or above 122°F in consistently hot regions. On California’s Central Coast, it may take 12–15 weeks, so it is usually impractical there. |
| Steam | Soil pests susceptible to heat in the treated soil. | UC IPM describes maintaining soil at approximately 160°F for 20 minutes. Fuel use, labor, and application time have hindered adoption; equipment and operating demands should be evaluated locally. |
| Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) | Some soilborne pathogens and broadleaf annual weeds in certain strawberry settings. | Requires an appropriate carbon source, water, bed preparation, plastic cover, and several weeks of anaerobic conditions. Performance depends on carbon material and rate, treatment duration, soil temperature, and water-holding capacity. It is not effective against every pathogen or weed. |
| Cover crops or seed meals | Some weed and nematode suppression, or preplant weed suppression and soil improvement in caneberry systems. | Results and crop fit vary. Some cover crops and weeds host root lesion nematode in raspberry systems; mustard seed meals can injure strawberries at high rates or when applied too close to transplanting. |
Use solarization only when the climate and calendar allow it
Solarization works by trapping heat under clear plastic laid over prepared beds in summer. It is not a reliable short-window treatment: the relevant condition is the soil temperature and duration achieved at the site, not simply the presence of plastic or hot air.

UC Statewide IPM’s strawberry guidance, with page text updated July 2023, gives 30–45 hot days with soil at least 122°F for suitable, consistently hot regions. It notes that California’s Central Coast may require 12–15 weeks to obtain pest-management benefits, making solarization usually impractical there. Check whether local summer conditions and the preplant schedule can meet the needed treatment window before relying on it.
Consider steam with its operating demands in view
Steam transfers heat into the soil. For the treatment described in UC IPM’s strawberry guidance (page text updated July 2023), soil needs to remain at approximately 160°F for 20 minutes. The same guidance notes that fuel consumption, labor, and application time have limited adoption. Those constraints make steam a site- and operation-specific option rather than a low-effort replacement for fumigation.

Plan ASD around its target pathogens and field history
ASD combines a readily biodegradable carbon source with water and a plastic cover to create anaerobic conditions for several weeks. In UC IPM’s California strawberry description, the carbon source—rice bran is one example—is incorporated into the upper 12–24 inches of soil, beds are formed, drip irrigation is applied, and the beds are covered. The treatment period is 3–5 weeks, and tears or holes in the plastic should be repaired because aeration undermines the anaerobic treatment.
UC IPM reports rice bran at 6–9 tons per acre as a commonly used carbon source in the cited California strawberry system. That is a system-specific figure, not a rate to transfer automatically to another crop or region. NC State Extension also explains that ASD performance depends on carbon source and rate, the anaerobic period, soil temperature, and water-holding capacity. Researchers have evaluated materials including agricultural byproducts, bran, compost, poultry litter, and cover crops; their mention does not establish that these materials are interchangeable or equally suitable in every field.

Check for the pathogens ASD may miss
UC IPM describes benefits against Verticillium wilt and many broadleaf annual weeds in some settings, but warns that typical autumn ASD in coastal strawberry production does not control important pathogens including Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae and Macrophomina phaseolina. It advises against autumn ASD in fields with a history of Fusarium wilt because the pathogen may reproduce on the added carbon source and worsen disease. ASD also has limited efficacy on perennial weeds. These cautions make diagnosis and field history essential parts of deciding whether ASD fits.

Cover crops can serve different purposes: weed suppression, soil improvement, or potential pest suppression. Those purposes should not be conflated. Penn State recommends preplant rye or sudangrass for weed suppression and organic matter in its raspberry guidance, and identifies rapeseed plowed under as green manure as one option where nematodes are present.

For strawberries, UC IPM notes that mustard cover crops and seed meals have reduced weeds and nematodes at some sites, but pathogen control has been inconsistent. Biomass and time requirements, cost, and possible phytotoxicity to strawberry at high seed-meal rates close to transplanting limit broader use. In raspberry systems, Washington State University Extension cautions that many available cover crops and weeds can host root lesion nematode; it also notes uncertainty or a lack of raspberry-specific testing for some approaches. A cover crop should therefore be checked against the particular nematode and crop before planting.
Make the decision using a field-specific checklist
- Identify the target. Establish whether the main concern is a pathogen, nematode, weed, or insect; do not infer the cause from symptoms alone.
- Review the field record. Check previous crops and known disease or nematode problems. For raspberries, consider a nematode survey based on prior land use and local advice; use the Penn State rotation guidance only in its stated Verticillium context.
- Match the method to the berry crop and region. The detailed ASD and solarization guidance here is for California strawberry systems. Raspberry rotation and cover-crop advice comes from extension sources and should be applied in its crop and regional context.
- Check timing and site conditions. For solarization, assess summer soil heating and the available preplant window. For ASD, assess whether the required water, carbon incorporation, plastic cover, and treatment period are feasible. For steam, account for equipment, fuel, labor, and application time.
- Check what the method does not control. Compare the identified pest with the method’s known limits, including pathogen-specific ASD gaps, solarization’s climate dependence, and cover-crop host risks for nematodes.
- Combine compatible measures. Cultivar choice, sanitation, site selection, rotation, and an appropriate soil treatment can form an integrated plan; no single treatment is established here as suitable for every berry crop, region, and pest complex.
