Start by placing the portable AC on a firm, level floor, then check for loose external parts, hose kinks, and blocked airflow. A small, low-pile rug may help with floor-transmitted sound if the unit remains stable and level. Grinding, electrical symptoms, worsening noise, or violent vibration call for stopping the unit and contacting service—not opening the appliance.
First, distinguish normal operating sound from a warning sign
Portable ACs make sound from airflow and the compressor; one portable-AC manual also identifies flowing-refrigerant sound as normal. The exact sound level varies by model. Honeywell’s general FAQ says some portable units produce over 60 decibels and many produce as little as 52 decibels, but those are broad examples from Honeywell, not measurements of every model or a controlled comparison. Pay attention to a new sound’s character and timing. A rattle that changes when the hose or unit touches nearby objects may point to external contact; sound alone cannot confirm a fault. Grinding, screeching, metal-on-metal contact, electrical symptoms, worsening noise, or violent vibration are reasons to stop troubleshooting and seek service.

Turn the AC off and verify its position
Set it on a horizontal, firm, level surface that can support it securely. Midea’s portable-AC service manual says the unit should be placed on a firm foundation to minimize noise and vibration, and calls for a smooth, level floor. Check for external contact or loose parts
Look for the body, exhaust hose, power cable, or window kit touching furniture or loose objects. Secure only accessible external parts as the manual permits. Do not open the cabinet or reach toward moving components; internal fan or motor problems require qualified service.

Reseat the exhaust hose and clear airflow paths
Check that the hose is attached securely, not kinked or sharply bent, and that visible obstructions are clear from the air duct, inlet, and outlet. Follow the supplied installation instructions and the model’s hose and clearance limits. Do not add a hose extension unless the manufacturer approves it for that model: Honeywell warns that lengthening its supplied hose can burden the blower, reduce cooling, or cause malfunction. Inspect and clean the filter as directed
With the AC off, check the filter and intake for dust or visible debris. Clean and reinstall the filter according to the model manual. Replace it only if it is damaged or replacement is due under the manufacturer’s schedule, and use a filter compatible with the exact model.

Consider a small, low-pile rug only after checking the floor
Honeywell suggests trying a small, low-pile rug if sound remains bothersome after confirming the floor is flat. Keep the AC level and stable, and do not cover or obstruct ventilation openings. Avoid thick cushions or anything that makes the appliance tilt. Honeywell portable AC FAQ

When to stop and call for service
Switch the unit off and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider if it makes grinding, screeching, or metal-contact sounds; has a burning smell, smoke, or sparking; develops persistent electrical-type buzzing alongside operating problems; or shows worsening noise or violent vibration. Repeated shutdowns or failure to start with persistent buzzing also warrant service. Do not open the appliance to diagnose a suspected internal fault. What not to do
- Do not put the AC on a thick, soft, or unstable surface that could make it tilt.
- Do not lengthen or modify the exhaust hose against the model’s instructions.
- Do not assume a sound identifies a specific failed part or that a rug or pad will quiet compressor noise.
- Do not open the cabinet or attempt work on internal fan, motor, or electrical components.
