Start by putting the TV’s HDMI input for your console in Game or another low-latency picture mode. Then check whether the controller is paired to the right device and using the connection method you intend. If both console and TV support HDMI Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), enable it to let the console request low-latency mode automatically.
1. Put the TV in Game mode
TV picture processing can delay what you see after pressing a button. On the TV, select Game, Game Mode, or the manufacturer’s equivalent low-latency option for the HDMI input the console uses. Sony, for example, says supported TVs use low-latency mode for HDMI games when the content type is set to Game. See Sony’s guidance on reducing input lag with the Game setting.
Check the setting for the correct input; changing the mode on a different HDMI input may not affect the console. Menu names, supported inputs, and availability vary by TV model and software version, so consult the instructions for your exact set.
2. Enable ALLM if both devices support it
HDMI Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) lets a compatible console or other source signal a compatible TV to switch into a low-latency mode automatically. It is useful when you do not want to switch picture modes manually, but both ends of the HDMI connection must support the feature and it must be enabled where required. Low-latency mode may stop some TV picture processing, so the image may look different and the mode may be less suitable for films or other viewing. ALLM does not guarantee that every image-enhancement feature is disabled, nor does it replace checking that the console is connected to the intended input.
3. Check how the controller is communicating
Make sure the controller is paired with the console or device you are actually using. If you are troubleshooting an unreliable wireless connection, test the model’s documented wired mode if available. For PS5, Sony advises that when the signal is weak, connect the controller with a USB cable and select Use USB Cable in the controller communication settings. Sony also notes that selecting Use Bluetooth keeps the controller on Bluetooth even when a USB cable is plugged in. See PlayStation’s PS5 controller settings instructions.

This is a platform-specific diagnostic, not proof that a wired connection always reduces input lag. A cable connected to the controller does not by itself confirm that USB is the active communication method, and controller behavior can vary by model and device. For connection compatibility details, refer to PlayStation’s controller support page.
4. Isolate the source of the delay
Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the delay is tied to the TV or controller. First enable the TV’s Game mode for the console input. Then verify the controller’s pairing and communication setting. If practical, compare with another game or source on the same TV; if the issue follows one controller or source, that points to a different part of the setup than a delay that occurs across multiple sources.

- If the picture feels delayed but controller inputs are otherwise consistent, focus first on the TV’s low-latency mode and input selection.
- If inputs drop, arrive inconsistently, or the controller will not pair reliably, use the support guide for that exact controller model. For DUALSHOCK 4, use Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting instructions; its reset steps are not general instructions for other controllers.
What to expect from these changes
The available official guidance describes settings and connection behavior, but does not establish a single number of milliseconds that these steps will save across TVs, consoles, controllers, games, and picture modes. Do not assume a new TV, HDMI cable, controller, or generic “lag reducer” will solve the problem. Confirm compatibility and test the built-in settings and connection options first.
