Reduce retro gaming input lag by finding which part of your setup adds delay: controller, game or emulator, video converter or scaler, or display. Start with reversible changes—put the TV in its model-specific Game mode, verify the console’s signal is supported, and adjust software settings one at a time. Buy hardware only if you identify a compatibility or processing bottleneck that settings cannot fix.

Find where the delay enters the setup

Input lag is a chain problem, not a single setting. A button press passes through the controller and game, then through any video conversion or scaling, and finally through the display. The exact delay depends on the equipment and its configuration; the sources available for this guide do not establish a universal amount of lag for retro setups or measure any reader’s complete chain.

Write down the equipment and connections before changing anything:

  • Original console or emulator, including the console model or the platform running the emulator.
  • Controller and its connection type, plus whether button mapping is correct.
  • Video connection, including any converter or scaler between the console and display.
  • Display model, active input, and the signal mode reaching it.

Change one setting at a time and compare the same game action under the same conditions. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped, had no effect, or introduced a different problem.

Set up the display for gaming

Use the TV’s model-specific Game setting

On a modern TV, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and software version. Sony’s support guidance, modified June 26, 2026, applies to the models it lists and instructs users of those models to set the content type to Game. Sony also notes that the procedure varies by model, so do not assume that another TV has the same menu path or label.

Confirm that you changed the setting for the input the console actually uses. If your TV offers other picture-processing controls, consult its manual before changing them; names, availability, and behavior differ across models. Make one change at a time so you can identify its effect and restore the previous setting if picture quality or compatibility worsens.

Check which signal the display is receiving

A display may accept a modern HDMI signal but not the original console’s output mode. If the console’s signal is unsupported, the problem is not necessarily a lag setting: you may need a compatible conversion path. Verify the console’s actual output mode and the display’s supported input modes before deciding that a converter or TV upgrade is necessary.

Choose a video path that matches the console

There is no universal rule that every HDMI converter behaves alike. A converter may scale or otherwise process the signal, and some paths can add delay. Before buying one, compare the specific source signal and target display rather than relying on a product category label.

  • Direct connection: Use it when the display accepts the console’s output mode. Check the display’s support for that mode rather than assuming that a connector fitting physically means the signal is compatible.
  • Line-multiplying scaler: The OSSC project describes its scan converter as handling analog SDTV, EDTV, HDTV, and PC modes and line-multiplying legacy signals. Its repository documentation, observed in 2026, states latency of less than two input scanlines. That is a project specification, not an independent measurement of the full console-to-display chain. Confirm that the particular console signal, OSSC version, and display output mode work together.
  • Buffered scaler or other converter: Check which input formats it accepts, what output timings it produces, how it handles modes such as 240p and 480i, and whether it uses frame buffering. A buffered design may differ from a line multiplier in both processing and compatibility; the name “HDMI converter” alone does not tell you how it behaves.

A 2018 Blur Busters forum discussion notes that some displays do not accept 240p and that specialized low-latency scaling may be needed in that situation. Treat that as guidance about a possible compatibility problem, not as a current compatibility list for particular displays or products. When comparing an OSSC-style line multiplier with a buffered scaler, check the exact input and output modes and interlaced-source handling rather than assuming one is the better choice for every console.

Adjust emulator latency settings carefully

If you play through RetroArch, its documentation covers several settings that can affect the video or audio path, including frame delay, synchronization fences, video drivers, swap-chain options, audio drivers, and audio buffering. These are separate controls, not a guaranteed recipe: platform, driver, display, and configuration all affect the result.

  1. Record the current configuration. Note the video and audio drivers and the latency-related options already in use, so you can undo a change that causes problems.
  2. Change one relevant option at a time. For example, test a frame-delay or synchronization setting without simultaneously changing the video driver, audio driver, or display mode.
  3. Check for trade-offs. V-Sync can affect tearing and stutter as well as delay. Blur Busters’ general guide discusses that trade-off in PC gaming, but the outcome for a particular emulator and display depends on the configuration.
  4. Keep the configuration that works for your setup. If a setting produces stutter, audio problems, or no apparent improvement, restore it before testing another option.

RetroArch’s project-authored latency page describes a next-frame response claim of ≤16 ms at 60 fps under suitable conditions. This is a project claim, not a guarantee for every platform or a measurement of your entire setup. At 60 Hz, one frame period is approximately 16.7 ms, calculated as 1,000 ms divided by 60; that conversion explains why frame-based timing can matter, but it does not establish the delay of any particular device.

Check controller mapping before replacing the controller

If buttons are misassigned or behave inconsistently, check the controller profile and mapping first. RetroArch documents updating a profile or binding controls manually. Correct mapping can fix an input problem, but it is not a measurement of controller latency. The available sources do not establish a general wired-versus-wireless latency comparison, so do not assume that changing connection type will solve a delay you have not isolated.

Keep online delay separate from local input lag

Local controller-to-display lag is different from delay caused by communication with another player. RetroArch’s netplay documentation describes peer-to-peer delay handling through rewind and replay; that does not mean ordinary local play has network latency. If a game feels delayed only during online play, distinguish that symptom from the response you get in local play before changing the display or video path.

Decide whether equipment needs to change

Try the existing display’s model-specific Game setting and confirm signal compatibility before shopping. If a hardware change still looks necessary, compare the complete path rather than a single headline feature:

Path to compare What to verify What the available evidence establishes
Existing display with Game setting Exact model, active input, supported signal mode, and the manufacturer’s instructions. Sony documents a Game content-type setting for listed models and says the procedure varies by model. It does not establish the setting or menu path for other brands.
Direct connection or external converter Accepted console input format, output mode, any processing or buffering, and display compatibility. The Blur Busters forum discussion describes a case where 240p compatibility can be an issue; it is not a comprehensive product list.
OSSC-style line multiplication or buffered scaling Source and output modes, 240p and 480i handling, display compatibility, and buffering behavior. The OSSC project documents line multiplication and a latency specification of less than two input scanlines; this is not an independent whole-chain test.
Original hardware or emulation Where the software runs, which latency controls are available, and whether controller mapping is correct. RetroArch documents configuration controls, but its project claims do not guarantee a result on a specific platform or setup.

Replace or add hardware only when you have identified a concrete limitation—for example, an unsupported source signal or a conversion path whose processing does not suit your needs. A scaler specification, display feature, or controller connection by itself does not predict the total response time of your setup.
