Start with airflow and unnecessary background activity, then adjust your laptop’s supported thermal settings in small steps. If it still runs too hot, test a frame-rate cap or lower-demand game settings. The best balance depends on your laptop, game, room temperature, and cooling design; a warm laptop during sustained gaming is not automatically faulty.
1. Improve airflow before changing performance settings
Place the laptop on a firm, level surface and leave its intake and exhaust vents unobstructed. Blankets, cushions, and other soft surfaces can block intakes and restrict cooling. Check external vents for visible debris, but clean them only as the manufacturer instructs. Do not push objects into vents or open the laptop unless you have service guidance for that exact model.
A stand or cooling pad may help preserve space beneath the laptop, but it is optional rather than a guaranteed fix. Check the laptop’s dimensions and vent layout before buying one. Lenovo advises checking product specifications and making sure a pad does not interfere with ventilation openings: Lenovo’s laptop cooling guidance.
2. Find and close unnecessary background activity
Close applications you are not using. If the fans remain unusually busy, check Task Manager or your laptop maker’s system utility for processes using substantial CPU or GPU resources. Dell identifies high background CPU load and startup applications as possible causes of increased fan speed; it cautions against disabling antivirus software as a troubleshooting shortcut. This step can reduce workload without lowering game quality, although the benefit depends on what was consuming resources.
3. Adjust the laptop’s supported thermal profile
Use the manufacturer’s software or documented BIOS controls, and change one setting at a time. Available modes and their behavior differ by model; do not assume a setting shown for another laptop applies to yours.

Compare profiles using the same game, scene, and conditions. Consider game smoothness, temperature, and fan noise together instead of choosing a mode based on its name alone.
4. Reduce game workload only if needed
If airflow and background activity are not enough, try a frame-rate cap or lower settings that increase CPU or GPU work. Compare the temperature and smoothness in the same game scene before and after the change. Reducing workload can reduce heat, but the amount varies; there is no universal temperature drop or FPS cost established for these adjustments.

5. Decide whether a cooling pad or stand fits your laptop
Before using a pad, check that its size suits the laptop, its airflow aligns with the laptop’s intakes, and it does not obstruct exhaust vents. Also consider the pad’s own fan noise and power requirements. A stand may provide space beneath the laptop without built-in fans. Neither accessory guarantees a particular temperature reduction or restores performance by itself.

Thermal throttling is a protective response, not automatically evidence of a defect. Dell explains: “When the processor or graphics chip reaches a high temperature, the computer reduces clock speed to lower heat output.” Dell also notes that throttling during sustained gaming can occur while a system is functioning as designed. Throttling during light use, lockups, or unexpected shutdowns warrants further troubleshooting.

Stop using the laptop and contact support if its chassis, keyboard, or trackpad is swollen, lifting, or deformed; if you notice a burning or chemical smell; or if it remains too hot to touch after shutdown. Seek service for a fan that does not work, unexpected shutdowns, or persistent overheating after following the troubleshooting instructions for your model.
