Reduce false positives by giving an AI reviewer the project context it can use, checking each comment against the code and intended behavior, and tracking why the team dismisses findings. Then pilot any instruction or setting changes on representative pull requests and measure both comment accuracy and useful bug detection. Treat AI comments as claims to verify—not as merge-blocking authority.
What counts as a false positive?
For a practical review workflow, call a finding useful when it identifies a plausible defect or material risk in the change, explains why it matters, and fits the project’s behavior and intent. A finding can be noise even when it is not strictly factually wrong: it may repeat another comment, fall outside the review’s agreed scope, or recommend a change that conflicts with local conventions.
Make that standard explicit before tuning the tool. If the team wants style or general best-practice advice, define that as a separate review goal so it is not confused with defect detection.
Give the reviewer context it can actually use
AI reviewers can miss repository conventions, API contracts, and the reason a change is being made. Put stable rules in the instruction mechanism supported by the specific product, and provide task context when available. Write rules that resolve recurring ambiguity
- Describe conventions that affect correctness, such as error handling, compatibility requirements, or which layer owns validation.
- Use path-specific guidance when different directories have different constraints.
- Make authoritative API contracts, design documents, service ownership details, or issue context available through supported mechanisms.
- Prefer concrete, testable rules over vague requests such as “write clean code.”
Do not assume a setting applies across every feature from the same vendor. GitHub’s AI Scan for pull requests is distinct from Copilot code review; its documentation says AI Scan uses specialized prompts and does not use Copilot instruction files. Adding those files therefore should not be presented as a way to tune AI Scan. GitHub’s AI Scan documentation describes that boundary.
Verify each comment against the change
Read the diff and relevant surrounding code before accepting or dismissing a finding. Follow the behavior the comment describes through relevant callers, callees, tests, contracts, and runtime assumptions. GitHub cautions that AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete, or irrelevant and recommends human oversight; its responsible-use guidance also says to verify Code Quality findings and suggestions before accepting them. - What exact failure path does the comment claim?
- Does the code already guard against that path?
- Does the claim rely on an assumption that conflicts with project behavior or an API contract?
- Would the proposed fix preserve intended behavior?
A comment is not confirmed simply because it sounds plausible, and a proposed patch is not safe merely because it addresses the described scenario. Check the reasoning and the resulting behavior.
Turn dismissals into useful feedback
When the product provides a feedback control, use it accurately for an inaccurate finding. GitHub says false-positive alert feedback can help improve its model, and its relevant features offer feedback such as thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Feedback is not a substitute for team records: keep a small log of recurring noise with the code example and the expected behavior.

Use consistent dismissal categories
- False positive: the claimed defect or risk is not present.
- Duplicate: another finding already covers the same issue.
- Out of scope: the comment is not part of the review goal the team agreed on.
- Convention mismatch: the suggestion conflicts with an established project practice.
- Missing context: the finding could be valid, but the reviewer lacked relevant project or task information.
- Useful: the finding is valid and actionable.
A 2026 study of CodeRabbit review feedback analyzed 31,073 review-and-feedback pairs across 10,191 pull requests in 239 GitHub repositories. It reported 36.4% accepted, 7.3% prompting discussion, and 56.3% rejected; rejection reasons included invalid suggestions, redundancy, scope mismatch, and misalignment with developer intent or coding practices. Those are outcomes in that study’s setting—not a general false-positive rate for AI code review tools. The CodeRabbit feedback study.
Review the log periodically. Change instructions or settings when a repeated, well-understood pattern emerges; a single disputed comment is weak evidence for a broad rule.

Pilot changes on your own pull requests
There is no established, transferable percentage reduction in false positives from adding instructions, context, or feedback. A local pilot is the way to find out whether a change improves your team’s results without suppressing useful findings.
- Select a representative sample. Include the repositories, languages, pull-request sizes, and risk levels the tool will actually review.
- Label findings consistently. Have human reviewers classify comments using the team’s categories, rather than counting every tool output as equally useful.
- Change one thing at a time where practical. For example, add a specific instruction for a recurring convention mismatch, then compare the next sample with the baseline.
- Compare accuracy and coverage together. Track the share of comments judged valid and actionable, whether known or human-identified defects surfaced, the severity of findings, reviewer time spent confirming or dismissing comments, and consistency across repositories and change types.
- Keep or revise the change based on the trade-off. Fewer comments are not an improvement if the tool also stops surfacing consequential defects.
Signal65’s 2026 comparison illustrates why counts alone are not enough: it evaluated five tools against historical bugs in six open-source repositories and reported tool-specific precision and incorrect-finding counts. Keep AI comments separate from merge gates
Do not make uncalibrated AI comments automatic merge blockers. If a platform offers a staged threshold for a rules-based check, use its evaluation mode to see which pull requests would be blocked before activating enforcement. GitHub Code Quality documents an Evaluate-to-Active flow for specified CodeQL findings and coverage, but Code Quality AI findings cannot be set as a threshold. GitHub also says AI-powered security findings cannot currently be used in rulesets to enforce merge requirements. These controls do not turn AI review comments into validated gates. Vendor descriptions of context awareness or learning from feedback are product capability claims, not independent evidence that false positives will be low for your team. For example, Graphite’s AI Reviews documentation describes its product’s capabilities; assess the practical result in a pilot rather than treating such claims as a performance guarantee.
