If an earbud hurts while you’re trying to sleep, take it out—don’t try to sleep through the pressure. Side-sleeping can press an earbud against the outer ear or into the ear canal, and a poor fit can irritate the canal. For bedtime audio, try an external bedside speaker or pillow speaker to avoid putting a device in your ear; a sleep headband is another option, though comfort depends on fit and sleeping position.

What to do when an earbud hurts at night

  1. Remove the earbud. Let your ear rest rather than enduring painful pressure.
  2. Check what is causing the pressure. Notice whether the earbud protrudes, its tip feels too large, or it is being pressed between your ear and pillow. Poor fit and pressure can irritate the ear, particularly when you sleep on your side.
  3. Don’t force the tip deeper. If it feels uncomfortable, adjust the fit while awake or stop using that earbud for sleep.

Cleveland Clinic audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff, AuD, says bedtime earbud use “can be OK, but it depends on how you’re using them” (Cleveland Clinic, April 8, 2026). Pain is a reason to stop, not a sign that you should keep adjusting until you can tolerate it.

How to make bedtime listening less uncomfortable

Keep listening brief and quiet

Use a low volume. Ruff suggests about half volume or lower, while keeping it low enough that you can still hear someone speaking nearby. Set a sleep timer so audio stops after you fall asleep instead of playing all night. These steps reduce listening time and sound exposure; they do not make a painful earbud comfortable.

Houston Methodist describes a 60/60 rule for general listening sessions, but that guidance is not a personalized safe limit for overnight listening. Cleveland Clinic notes that very loud audio can cause harm in as little as 15 minutes, but does not give a sound level for that statement. Neither figure establishes a safe overnight exposure threshold.

Ozlo Sleepbuds® 2 - Sleep Earbuds, Snoring & Noise Masking Headphones
  • SIDE-SLEEPER FIT THAT STAYS PUT ALL NIGHT. Just 1.6g and flush to your ear, so you can roll over without soreness or pop-out. Four soft ear tip sizes for a secure, personal fit.
  • MASKS SNORING, TRAFFIC, AND CITY NOISE. A steady sound shield holds all night long, tuned for the low rumble of partner snoring. Consistent sound keeps the noises that usually wake you from reaching you.
  • 14-HOUR BATTERY LASTS THE WHOLE NIGHT. No waking up to a dead bud at 3am. A private in-ear alarm wakes only you, at a volume you set, without disturbing your partner.
  • 50+ SLEEP SOUNDS, OR STREAM YOUR OWN. White noise, nature, and calm tones for sleep or meditation, plus music and podcasts over Bluetooth. A sleep timer fades audio as you drift off, then switches to masking.
  • PURPOSE-BUILT FOR SLEEP, NOT ADAPTED FROM DAYTIME EARBUDS. The Smart Case measures bedroom noise, light, and temperature overnight, and the Ozlo app (iOS + Android) turns it into sleep insights that sharpen with use.

Keep earbuds and ears clean and dry

Clean earbuds according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Cleveland Clinic advises cleaning them at least weekly; Houston Methodist also recommends following the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. Let the device dry before use, and avoid inserting earbuds when your ears are damp after bathing. In-ear devices can trap moisture, and wearing them for extended periods may push earwax deeper, contributing to irritation or a blocked feeling.

Keep environmental sounds audible

If you need to hear alarms, calls, or other important sounds, avoid blocking them completely. Cleveland Clinic advises leaving noise-canceling modes off at bedtime.

Alternatives to in-ear earbuds for sleep

Option What it changes What to consider
External bedside speaker Plays sound without putting a device in or pressing one against your ear. Keep the volume low and use a timer. Cleveland Clinic audiologist Ruff says, “Using an external speaker would be best.”
Pillow speaker Offers audio near the pillow without an in-ear tip. Placement and comfort vary; use a low volume and timer.
Sleep headband headphones Places audio in a wearable band rather than in the ear canal. It avoids an in-ear tip, but the band can still feel uncomfortable depending on its fit, materials, and your sleeping position.

These are alternatives to compare, not guaranteed remedies. University of Rochester Medicine neurotologist Dorothy Pan, MD, PhD, notes that “There isn’t strong evidence that over-the-ear headphones are inherently safer than earbuds” (February 19, 2026). Choose based on whether the device presses on your ear, works for your sleeping position, allows low-volume timed playback, and can be kept clean.

When to stop using earbuds and seek medical advice

Stop wearing earbuds overnight and contact a clinician if you have ear pain, changes in hearing, or signs that could indicate an infection. Houston Methodist doctor of audiology Mary Williams warns that extended use of closed-back headphones, earphones, or earbuds can raise the risk of ear-canal irritation or infection, especially if moisture is trapped (May 15, 2025). Overnight earbuds do not inevitably cause infection or hearing loss, but persistent symptoms deserve medical attention.
