Reduce data-center dust with compatible intake and room-air filtration, fewer internal dust sources, and regular inspection. Control corrosion separately: monitor copper and silver coupons, investigate elevated results, and use gas-phase filtration or humidity changes only when measurements and site conditions justify them. Filter ratings and operating limits are not universal; they depend on the air-handling system, economizer configuration, equipment, and contaminants.

Separate particulate control from corrosion control

Dust and gaseous contamination need different controls. Particles can accumulate on equipment, obstruct cooling, or become conductive or corrosive. Gaseous pollutants can attack copper and silver components. Moisture, temperature, and the mixture of pollutants affect the rate of corrosion, so a particle filter alone does not establish control of gaseous contamination.

A practical program combines air filtration and source reduction with corrosion monitoring. Use observations to understand particulate loading; use coupon measurements and, where appropriate, pollutant measurements to assess corrosivity.

Choose particle filters for the air path and equipment

ASHRAE’s 2011 Gaseous and Particulate Contamination Guidelines for Data Centers calls for ISO Class 8 cleanliness and describes MERV 8 filtration for continuous room-air filtration and MERV 11, preferably MERV 13, for incoming air. These are general approaches from that edition, not universal specifications. With an air-side economizer, the appropriate intake filter depends on site conditions.

MERV 14 V-Bank (4V) HVAC Air Filter, 20x24x12, Microglass Media
  • High-Efficiency Filtration: MERV 11–15 (ASHRAE 52.2) captures dust, pollen, other fine particles for superior indoor air quality.
  • Critical Environment Ready: Ideal for data centers, hospitals, cleanrooms, factories, and industrial HVAC systems where stable airflow and clean air are essential.
  • Compact & Energy-Saving V-Bank Design: Mini pleat construction maximizes airflow, reduces pressure drop, and lowers HVAC fan energy consumption.
  • Durable Frame & Stable Pleats: Lightweight ABS plastic frame with 20 mm header, while thermoplastic bead separators maintain pleat structure for consistent performance.
  • Extended Service Life & Low Maintenance: Deep synthetic media minipleats increase dust-holding capacity, reduce replacement frequency, and lower operating costs.

Equipment documentation may set more specific requirements. For example, a Supermicro system manual published in 2026 specifies MERV 11 or better for incoming air and MERV 8 or better for continuous room filtration. Follow the documentation for the equipment actually installed, alongside the air handler’s permitted filter dimensions, airflow and pressure-drop limits.

Air path or control ASHRAE 2011 guidance Key qualification
Incoming air MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 Economizer and site conditions affect the choice; confirm system compatibility.
Continuous room-air filtration MERV 8 Confirm air-handler and equipment requirements.
Gas-phase chemical filtration No universal media specification stated Select for identified contaminants and actual airflow; particle MERV ratings do not describe gas removal.

Reduce dust sources and use inspections as evidence

ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline says, “Sources of dust inside data centers should be reduced.” Check air-handling filters and IT equipment for visible accumulation, and record how often filters need replacement. Those observations help reveal particulate loading and whether filtration or source controls need attention.

MERV 15 V-Bank (3V) HVAC Air Filter, 20x20x12, Microglass Media
  • High-Efficiency Filtration: MERV 11–15 (ASHRAE 52.2) captures fine dust, pollen, other particles for superior indoor air quality.
  • Critical Environment Ready: Ideal for data centers, hospitals, cleanrooms, factories, and industrial HVAC systems where stable airflow and clean air are essential.
  • Compact & Energy-Saving V-Bank Design: Mini pleat construction maximizes airflow, reduces pressure drop, and lowers HVAC fan energy consumption.
  • Durable Frame & Stable Pleats: Lightweight ABS plastic frame with 20 mm header, while thermoplastic bead separators maintain pleat structure for consistent performance.
  • Extended Service Life & Low Maintenance: Deep synthetic media minipleats increase dust-holding capacity, reduce replacement frequency, and lower operating costs.
  • Inspect filters and equipment for visible contamination as part of the facility’s maintenance routine.
  • Track filter changes so unusual loading or a change over time is noticed.
  • Use equipment-specific cleaning procedures. The cited guidance does not establish one universal room-cleaning schedule or cleaning chemical; do not blow dust into equipment or apply chemicals near electronics without an approved procedure.

Measure gaseous corrosivity with copper and silver coupons

Visual checks and filter inspections do not measure gaseous corrosion. ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline describes exposing copper and silver foil coupons in the data center for about 30 days, then sending them to a laboratory to measure corrosion-product thickness. The 2023 ASHRAE Handbook chapter on data centers recommends coupon measurements at least twice a year, once in winter and once in summer, under its expanded thermal guidance.

Place coupons at suitable rack-inlet locations and use a qualified laboratory. Results depend on where and under what airflow conditions the coupons are exposed, so record placement and exposure conditions to make results interpretable.

Interpret older corrosion targets in their publication context

ASHRAE’s 2011 guideline gives G1 corrosion targets of less than 300 Å/month for copper and less than 200 Å/month for silver, citing ISA-71.04 for the copper target. Treat these as the values in that dated guideline, not a substitute for applicable current ASHRAE guidance or the equipment manufacturer’s requirements.

Investigate elevated coupon results before changing humidity

Humidity is not a standalone corrosion control with one ideal setpoint for every facility. ASHRAE’s 2023 handbook guidance links expanded humidity operation to coupon results: high corrosivity or a lack of routine coupon testing calls for more conservative humidity limits. Corrosion also depends on pollutant mix, so interpret readings with local site conditions.

ASHRAE’s 2020 summary of RP-1755 reports that when both copper and silver corrosion are high, upper moisture should be below 60% RH and possibly below 50%. The same summary says RH should not exceed 70% at 21°C, noting increased copper corrosion at 80% RH regardless of pollutant composition. These are study findings and context, not generic operating setpoints for every data center.

If coupon results are elevated, review likely contamination routes before choosing a remedy:

  • Check local industrial and outdoor pollution sources and the paths by which intake air enters the facility.
  • Review humidification, cleaning practices, and other possible sources of contamination.
  • Use pollutant measurements or extensive coupon testing to clarify the problem, especially when evaluating a site.
  • Consider engineered gas-phase chemical filtration for identified pollutants and the facility’s actual airflow. ASHRAE’s RP-1755 summary recommends chemical filtration to remove highly corrosive catalyst-type pollutants.

ASHRAE attributes this advice to Jianshun (Jensen) Zhang, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, Syracuse University, principal investigator of RP-1755: “Data center operators should take actions to remove the highly corrosive catalysts type pollutants using chemical filtration.”

Turn the findings into a facility-specific control plan

  1. Confirm the requirements. Check the installed equipment manuals and air-handler limits for filter type, dimensions, airflow, and pressure drop.
  2. Review the air paths. Distinguish intake filtration from room-air recirculation, and account for any air-side economizer and local air quality.
  3. Inspect and record. Look for dust on filters and equipment and track filter replacement frequency.
  4. Establish a corrosion baseline. Expose copper and silver coupons for the selected period, document their locations and airflow conditions, and have a qualified laboratory analyze them. The cited ASHRAE guidance supports about 30 days per exposure and seasonal testing at least twice a year.
  5. Respond to measured problems. Investigate pollutant sources and consider gas-phase filtration or humidity adjustments only in light of coupon results, contaminant conditions, current guidance, and equipment requirements.
