Reduce cloud costs by matching compute and storage to what each workload actually needs—not simply by choosing the lowest unit price. Start with representative cost and utilization data, make one low-risk change at a time, then verify that performance and reliability still meet requirements. A cheaper instance or storage tier can raise total cost if it needs more capacity, incurs retrieval charges, or adds operational work.
How do I reduce my cloud bill?
Use a repeatable optimization loop: find the workloads driving cost, understand their demand and business output, choose a change that fits that demand, and measure the result after deployment. Review costs by workload, service, and owner so that a large or rapidly changing line item has context before you act. AWS Cost Optimization Hub, for example, brings together recommendations for rightsizing, idle-resource removal, Savings Plans, and Reserved Instances across supported resources, accounts, and regions (AWS Cost Optimization Hub).
- Attribute the spend. Break down the bill by workload, service, and owner; investigate the largest and most variable areas first.
- Measure representative demand. Gather CPU, memory, storage I/O, network traffic, and workload output. Include normal cycles, peak periods, and seasonality rather than relying on one quiet snapshot.
- Identify the mismatch. Determine whether the workload is idle, oversized, poorly scaled, or paying for a storage tier or access pattern that no longer fits.
- Make a bounded change. Change one resource, policy, or scheduling rule at a time where practical, with a rollback path and suitable performance and reliability safeguards.
- Verify both cost and service. Compare spend and service-level signals before and after the change, and track a business measure such as cost per job, request, active user, or transaction.
Provider recommendations are useful evidence, not an automatic change order. AWS Cost Explorer rightsizing calculations use 14 days of data, while AWS Compute Optimizer preferences document 32-day and 93-day lookback options; the longer period has additional requirements. Those windows are methodology details, not proof that a recommendation accounts for every workload cycle or business constraint. Review the recommendation against your own demand history and requirements (AWS Cost Explorer rightsizing; AWS Compute Optimizer recommendations).
How do I right-size cloud compute resources?
Right-sizing means choosing a resource type and size that can meet the workload’s observed demand and service objectives without paying for persistently unused capacity. Compare performance per unit cost, not just hourly price. CPU and memory behavior, architecture and software compatibility, startup time, scaling granularity, reliability needs, and operations overhead can all change the total cost of a choice.

Remove genuinely idle capacity
Confirm that a resource is not needed for a scheduled job, recovery process, standby role, or other requirement before removing it. AWS Compute Optimizer analyzes configuration and utilization metrics to identify idle-resource and right-sizing opportunities; validate any suggested action against the workload’s role and operating requirements (AWS Compute Optimizer recommendations).
Resize underused resources carefully
Look across representative periods for sustained excess capacity, then test a smaller or better-matched resource. Do not size from average CPU alone: memory pressure, I/O, network demand, and short peaks may be the actual constraint. Keep enough headroom for expected growth and bursts, and check application performance and reliability after the change. AWS rightsizing calculations also document limitations related to commitment effects, so account for existing commitments when estimating savings (AWS Cost Explorer rightsizing).

Scale with demand and schedule eligible resources
For variable workloads, autoscaling can align capacity with changing demand; for nonproduction systems, scheduled shutdowns can avoid paying for hours when those resources are not required. Set schedules around actual team and pipeline needs, and ensure that shutdowns do not interrupt testing, maintenance, or recovery. Microsoft’s FinOps guidance covers scaling down or shutting down during off-peak periods, autoscaling, native recommendations, and commitment offers (Microsoft FinOps workload optimization).
Use interruptible capacity only when interruption is acceptable
Spot capacity can suit fault-tolerant, restartable, or flexible jobs, but it is a poor fit when interruption would violate a latency, availability, or completion-time requirement. Include retry behavior and the cost of interruption in the comparison rather than treating the discounted compute rate as the whole answer.

Which storage tier should I use for infrequently accessed data?
Choose a tier based on the full data lifecycle: how often data is read, how quickly it must be retrieved, how long it must be retained, and what retrieval, request, replication, backup, and transfer costs apply. A lower capacity rate is not necessarily cheaper overall if access is frequent or retrieval is costly. AWS recommends examining object access patterns and considering lifecycle policies or Intelligent-Tiering; its guidance also calls for careful investigation of very low-activity EBS volumes (AWS storage tiering guidance).
Classify data before changing tiers
- Frequently accessed, latency-sensitive data: favor a tier whose access behavior meets application needs, even if its capacity rate is higher.
- Infrequently accessed data: compare the lower storage rate with retrieval and request charges, access latency, minimum storage constraints, and transition costs.
- Retained data with uncertain access patterns: consider whether automated tiering can reduce manual classification work, while accounting for the service’s terms and transaction behavior.
- Data subject to retention or recovery obligations: preserve required retention, redundancy, backup, and restore behavior before setting transitions or expiration.
Automate lifecycle changes only after validating requirements
Lifecycle rules can transition or expire objects according to age or other policy conditions. Before enabling them, verify that the application can tolerate retrieval delays and fees, that minimum-duration rules will not make short-lived transitions uneconomic, and that expiration is permitted by retention and deletion policies. Azure’s data-cost guidance likewise separates storage, transaction, and latency costs and highlights lifecycle, retention, replication, backups, data volume, file formats, and storage choice (Azure data-cost optimization).

When should I buy a reservation or savings plan?
Commitments can lower rates when future eligible use is stable enough to match the commitment. Forecast the workload first, include commitments already in place, and compare the effective rate with the loss of flexibility if demand falls, shifts region or service, or changes resource type. After purchase, review both coverage (how much eligible usage is covered) and utilization (how much of the commitment is actually used); an unused commitment can erase the expected benefit.
Microsoft’s FinOps Framework lists vendor-stated maximums of up to 72% savings with Azure reservations and up to 65% with Azure savings plans for compute. These are offer-specific maximums, not typical outcomes or predictions: realized savings depend on eligible usage and terms. Confirm current eligibility, flexibility, and pricing for the relevant service and region before committing (Microsoft FinOps rate optimization).

How should I compare compute and storage options?
Use the dimensions that can change workload cost or suitability, not a single headline rate.
| Decision | Compare | Key risk to check |
|---|---|---|
| Compute resource | Price for needed capacity; observed CPU, memory, I/O, and network behavior; performance per unit cost; scaling granularity; startup time; compatibility; applicable discounts; operations effort. | A low unit price may require more capacity, impair performance, or fail reliability objectives. |
| Storage tier | Capacity rate; request and retrieval charges; access latency; transition constraints; retention and deletion requirements; replication; backup and restore; data-transfer effects. | Infrequent access does not guarantee low total cost if retrieval, minimum-duration, or operational costs dominate. |
| Commitment offer | Effective discount; term and flexibility; eligible services, regions, or families; utilization and coverage; forecast confidence. | Usage can fall or move outside the commitment’s eligibility, leaving paid-for capacity or discount unused. |
How do I know whether an optimization worked?
Compare the change against a baseline that includes both cost and service outcomes. Use a period that reflects the workload’s cycle, and account for traffic or output changes so that growth is not mistaken for worse efficiency. A useful unit metric—such as cost per transaction or job—can show whether the system is delivering more value for its spend. Revisit the result after deployment; if performance or reliability worsens, restore capacity or revise the change rather than treating lower spend alone as success.
Prices depend on provider, service, region, configuration, data movement, discounts, and contract terms. This guide covers AWS and Azure evidence; it does not establish a cross-cloud price comparison or an account-specific savings estimate. Use the relevant provider’s current calculator and your own account data before a purchase or migration decision.
