Lower dimming can soften halos, but may make blacks look greyer or reduce contrast. The best setting depends on the TV’s model and dimming algorithm; there is no universal number to use.
Why blooming happens on MiniLED TVs
A MiniLED TV uses groups of LEDs behind its LCD panel to light and dim areas of the picture. When a bright object—such as a subtitle or star—is smaller than the backlight zone that illuminates it, some surrounding dark area may light up too. That glow is called blooming or haloing.
MiniLED can use smaller zones and produce tighter halos than a backlight with larger zones, but a zone still does not control each pixel individually. The TV’s dimming algorithm and how quickly it changes zones also affect what you see. Zone count alone cannot predict halo visibility.
How to compare local-dimming settings
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use subtitles on a dark scene, credits, a starfield, or another image with small bright details against black. Note the source, picture mode, and current local-dimming setting.
- Keep the conditions steady. Use the same scene and source, watch from your usual seat, and compare in dim room lighting. Change one control at a time so you can tell what made a difference.
- Test each available local-dimming level. If your TV offers levels such as Off, Normal, and High, compare them rather than assuming one is best. Labels and behavior differ by model. TCL, for example, documents those modes for its MiniLED support guidance, but its advice does not establish how another brand’s settings will behave. TCL MiniLED Local Dimming Adjustment Options.
- Judge the trade-off, not just the halo. Compare halo size and intensity with black depth, visibility of dark detail, and the brightness of tiny highlights. A setting that makes halos less obvious may also make blacks look greyer or dim small objects.
RTINGS advises adjusting the TV’s Local Dimming setting for the best results and notes that dimming algorithms and transitions affect visible halos. Its test guidance recommends trying a lower setting when aggressive effects are distracting. RTINGS TV picture-quality tests: local dimming.

What to expect from higher and lower dimming
Local dimming is a balance, not a universal blooming cure. A more aggressive setting can improve perceived contrast, but the halo around a bright object may become more noticeable in some scenes. A lower setting can soften that glow while lifting dark areas. Some TVs may also dim very small highlights when set to a more aggressive mode; TCL notes this behavior for objects smaller than a zone in its own guidance.
Choose the setting that looks best across the content you actually watch. If one level hides subtitles’ halos but crushes dark detail or makes highlights too dim, another level may be a better compromise.

Check other picture controls carefully
If local dimming alone does not give an acceptable result, you can test contrast-enhancement controls separately, but do not lower every control labeled “brightness” or “contrast.” Those names can refer to different parts of the image. A Philips/Roku manual, for example, distinguishes backlight intensity from dark level and white level. Philips/Roku TV user manual.
Subtitle placement is another separate experiment: some playback apps let you move subtitles into a letterbox bar, which may change their interaction with the dimming zones. This depends on the app, so it is not a TV-wide fix.

Tell blooming apart from backlight bleed
Blooming moves with bright content: the glow appears around a subtitle or other bright object and changes as the picture changes. Backlight bleed is a fixed glow at an edge or corner that stays in place. The two can coexist, so check whether the glow follows content or remains fixed, including on a full-black screen. TV Test’s blooming test and explanation includes browser-based bright-on-black patterns for comparing settings.
If you see a persistent edge or corner glow, investigate screen uniformity separately rather than treating it as a local-dimming halo. If normal viewing remains unacceptable after checking settings, use the seller’s applicable return or support process. Blooming by itself does not prove that a panel is defective.

Check motion and your intended viewing mode
Static subtitles are useful for comparing settings, but also watch a moving bright object against a dark background. A TV’s zones may transition slowly or inaccurately, producing flicker, a darker leading edge, or a trailing halo. Dimming performance can also differ between picture modes, including a game mode, so compare settings in the mode you intend to use.
- Halo size and intensity: How much glow surrounds subtitles and small highlights?
- Black depth and shadow detail: Do dark areas look convincingly dark while retaining detail?
- Small-highlight brightness: Do stars or other tiny bright objects become noticeably dim?
- Motion behavior: Do halos trail, flicker, or appear as objects move?
- Mode consistency: Does the result hold in your usual picture or game mode?
Menu paths, setting names, and effects vary with brand, model, firmware, picture mode, and source. Use your TV’s picture settings to locate local dimming, then judge its available levels on your own set rather than copying a numeric preset from another model.
