If a portable evaporative air cooler is making a room damp, smelling musty, or sounding rough, address each symptom differently: ventilate to clear added moisture, drain and clean stale water, and check only the simple noise causes your model’s manual permits. Unplug the unit before cleaning or inspection, and refer persistent mechanical problems to the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
How to reduce humidity from an evaporative cooler
An evaporative cooler lowers air temperature by turning water into vapor, so its airflow adds moisture to the room. Ventilation is therefore part of normal operation, not an optional fix. Honeywell says cross-ventilation through open doors or windows helps excess humidity leave the room. Honeywell’s support FAQ describes about 60% relative humidity or lower as the preferred range for evaporative cooling; this is manufacturer guidance, not a universal cutoff for every model or climate.
- Create an exhaust path. Open doors or windows so fresh air can enter and humid room air can leave. Avoid running the cooler in a closed room without a route for moisture to escape.
- Check relative humidity if needed. An indoor hygrometer can show whether the room is already humid. It measures humidity; it does not remove moisture.
- Pause evaporative cooling when humidity is high. Honeywell advises against using its evaporative cooling function at 60% relative humidity or above until humidity falls. Turn off the pump or cooling function and use fan-only mode if your model supports it.
Honeywell also states that most of its models can reach up to about 60 dBA at the highest fan speed and that cooling can be up to about 15°F in very hot, dry conditions. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not guaranteed outcomes or independent test results; actual sound and cooling vary by model and conditions. Honeywell support FAQ
Why does my air cooler smell musty?
A new cooler may have a temporary odor from its honeycomb media. Honeywell says this can fade after several uses. A persistent musty smell is more often associated in manufacturer guidance with stagnant tank or sump water, dirty or clogged pads, or mildew. Hessaire and Symphony both identify these as possible odor causes. Hessaire odor guidance Symphony troubleshooting guide

Drain and refresh the water
Unplug the cooler before cleaning. Empty stale water, clean and flush the tank or sump as directed in the manual, then refill with fresh water. Honeywell recommends draining and refilling at least weekly for its units; the appropriate schedule for other models may differ. Honeywell cooler guide
Clean or replace affected media as the manual allows
Inspect the pads or honeycomb media for dirt, clogging, deterioration, or suspected mold. Clean them only by the method permitted for your model; replace media if the manual calls for replacement or visible mold or damage is present. Honeywell’s guide says to replace media with mold spots or suspected algae. Symphony likewise advises replacing affected pads. Honeywell cooler guide Symphony troubleshooting guide

Dry the cooler before storage
After evaporative use, run fan-only mode to dry the media if your cooler offers that setting. Before long-term storage, drain and dry the unit according to its manual. Drying helps avoid leaving damp media and stagnant water sitting between uses. Honeywell cooler guide
Do not assume additives are safe
Manufacturer advice differs: Honeywell’s FAQ mentions a small amount of vinegar or an appropriate bacteriostatic treatment, while Symphony warns against cleaners, treatments, or additives in its equipment because they may affect warranty and equipment life. Use only the cleaning method and products approved in your exact model’s manual. Honeywell support FAQ Symphony troubleshooting guide

Why is my air cooler making noise?
The cause depends on the sound and when it occurs. Manufacturer troubleshooting lists low water or a pump issue among possibilities when a cooler makes noise or does not cool; knocking, shaking, or rattling can also point to mechanical parts rubbing or coming loose. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your unit.
Start with checks allowed by the manual
- If the sound occurs during cooling, confirm the water level and pump status using the unit’s instructions. Do not run the pump dry unless the manual specifically permits it.
- Check that the cooler is stable and look for an obvious external rattle, such as a loose item touching the housing.
- Unplug the unit before cleaning or inspecting it. Do not open energized equipment or attempt electrical repairs.
Honeywell lists a pump that is off, low or no water during cooling, a damaged pump, and calcium deposits on the blower among possible causes of noise or poor cooling. It directs customers to service for a damaged pump or deposits rather than presenting those as routine user fixes. Honeywell cooler guide
Stop if abnormal noise persists
A new grinding sound, persistent knocking, or loud rattle after basic checks may involve a damaged pump, deposits, blower or motor components, or loose or misaligned parts. Symphony’s troubleshooting guidance lists dry blower bearings, a wheel rubbing its housing, and a loose belt or pulley for relevant cooler designs. Because designs vary, do not improvise lubrication or internal adjustments; contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider. Electrical work should be left to a certified electrician.
