Restore the previous Firefox session

Select Menu button → History → Restore Previous Session to restore the previous session. After a crash, Firefox may show a Restore Session page; select the windows or tabs you need and choose Restore Session.

If Firefox crashes again while restoring, choose Start New Session. Then try History → Recently Closed Windows or History → Recently Closed Tabs.

Make Firefox restore tabs automatically

  1. Click the Firefox menu button and select Settings. On some Mac installations, use Firefox → Settings or Firefox → Preferences.
  2. Open General.
  3. Find Home and startup page.
  4. Under Startup, enable Open previous windows and tabs.

Firefox restores regular and pinned tabs, but not private windows. If recently closed items disappear, check Settings → Privacy & Security → History. Clearing browsing and download history when Firefox closes can remove recovery information. Manually closing several windows can also affect recovery: the normal previous-session mechanism restores only the last closed window’s tabs.

Use browsing history when tab recovery no longer works

When the recently closed list has been replaced or cleared, search ordinary browsing history:

  1. Open the browser menu.
  2. Select History.
  3. Search by site name, page title, or approximate time.
  4. Open the matching result in a new tab.

History is a fallback, not a full reconstruction of the old tab. It may recover the URL but not typed form contents, scroll position, authentication state, unsaved local content, or dynamically generated page data.

Why a closed tab may not be recoverable

  • The recovery list was overwritten: closing more tabs can push the original entry out.
  • History was cleared: manual or automatic cleanup can remove recovery records.
  • Private browsing was used: private windows generally do not remain in ordinary history; Firefox does not restore them.
  • The browser was forced to quit: session data may reflect only the last state saved before the crash.
  • Session data is damaged: a crash, update, extension conflict, or corrupt profile can prevent a complete restore.
  • A Firefox window was closed manually: the normal previous-session mechanism restores only the last closed window’s tabs.

For Firefox tabs that reopen as blank pages or the home page, Mozilla’s troubleshooting route is to disable add-ons in Troubleshoot Mode or reset Firefox settings.

Prevent losing important tabs

  • Bookmark pages you will need later instead of relying only on the recently closed list.
  • Use tab groups or a saved reading list for research sessions.
  • Enable Firefox’s Open previous windows and tabs setting if automatic session recovery is useful to you.
  • Close Firefox normally: use Firefox menu → Exit on Windows or Linux, or Firefox menu → Quit Firefox on macOS.
  • Do not depend on private browsing for work you need to recover later.

Can I reopen a browser window with all its tabs?

Often, yes. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and many Chromium-based browsers can restore a recently closed window. Try the reopen-tab shortcut, then check History for a closed window or previous session.

Can I recover an incognito or private tab?

Usually not. Private browsing is designed not to retain the normal browsing record, and Firefox explicitly does not restore private windows. If you know the page URL, you may be able to open it again manually.

Why did History find the page but not restore my form data?

History stores the page address and related visit information, not necessarily the tab’s complete live state. Form entries, scroll position, unsaved content, authentication state, and dynamic page data may be lost.

What should I do if Firefox restores blank tabs?

Try Firefox Troubleshoot Mode to check for an extension conflict. If the problem continues, reset Firefox settings. Corrupt session data or an update-related change can also prevent a complete restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Firefox not show my recently closed tabs?

Check Settings → Privacy & Security → History. Clearing browsing and download history on exit can remove the information Firefox needs. Private windows are not restored, and the previous-session mechanism restores only the last manually closed window’s tabs.

The Bottom Line

Try Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + T on macOS. Use the shortcut repeatedly for older tabs, then check the browser’s History menu for a closed window or previous session. If the page was private, recovery data was cleared, or session data cannot be reconstructed, ordinary history may recover only the URL—not the tab’s full state.
