If you can still open the email address linked to your PlayStation account, start with Sony’s self-service recovery: go to Account Management, select Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account, enter your sign-in ID, and follow the secure link Sony emails you. If the linked email is inaccessible or the hacker changed your account details, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant instead. These steps reflect Sony’s US guidance reviewed October 4, 2026; support options may differ elsewhere.
Choose the recovery route that fits your situation
The key question is whether you can use the email or sign-in method Sony needs to verify you, and whether the attacker changed your account information. Sony warns that someone who signs in to your account can change your sign-in information and lock you out, according to its security best practices.
| What’s happening | What to do |
|---|---|
| You can access the linked email and account details have not been changed | Use Sony’s self-service account recovery flow. |
| You cannot access the linked email, or you do not know which email is linked | Contact Sony’s Online Assistant. |
| Your sign-in ID, online ID, or password changed without your permission | Contact Sony’s Online Assistant; do not rely on a reset sent to an address you may no longer control. |
| You are blocked by a lost phone or 2-step verification code | Use Sony’s 2-step verification troubleshooting guidance, then contact the Online Assistant if you still cannot sign in. |
| You use a passkey but cannot use the device that verifies it | Try another device with the same verification method; otherwise contact the Online Assistant. |
Recover the account with access to its email
- Open Sony’s account recovery page from PlayStation’s official website. Avoid recovery links in unsolicited messages.
- In Account Management, choose Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account.
- Enter the sign-in ID associated with the account.
- Check that email inbox for Sony’s secure recovery link. Sony says delivery may take a few minutes.
- Open the link and follow Sony’s instructions to regain access.
If the email does not arrive, check the correct inbox and its spam or junk folder. If you cannot open the linked mailbox, or the account details were changed, switch to the support route rather than repeatedly trying a reset that depends on information you no longer control.
If the hacker changed your PSN email or sign-in details
When you do not recognize a change to your sign-in ID, online ID, or password, Sony directs you to its Online Assistant. Start at the official account recovery page and follow the contact option for your case. Sony’s separate sign-in troubleshooting guide can also help identify the appropriate support path.

Do not keep sending password-reset requests to an email address that may have been replaced by the attacker. Do not give anyone your password, one-time verification code, or backup codes, including someone claiming to offer account recovery outside Sony’s official support channels. Sony does not promise a particular restoration outcome or response time.
If you lost access to the linked email account
Sony directs users who cannot open the verification or password-reset email, or who have forgotten their sign-in email, to the Online Assistant. Contact your email provider separately to secure or recover that mailbox, especially if you suspect it was also compromised. Sony’s compromised-account guidance advises changing the email account password first when you receive a suspicious account-change message and can still do so.

Lost phone or 2-step verification code
Check Sony’s 2-step verification troubleshooting page for guidance on backup codes and a lost phone. If you still cannot receive a code or sign in, contact the Online Assistant. Keep backup codes private; never send them to another person.

Secure the account and check for charges after recovery
Strengthen sign-in security
Once you regain access, set a strong, unique password that you do not reuse on other services. Sony identifies password managers and passkeys as options that can support good security practices. Review Sony’s PlayStation security guidance for account-protection options.
Review purchases before disputing a charge
If you see a charge you do not recognize, check PlayStation transaction history and consider whether it came from a recurring subscription, another account using the same payment method, or a family purchase. Sony provides separate routes for unrecognized payments and compromised accounts. Refund eligibility depends on the applicable regional policy; do not assume a charge will be reimbursed.
