Whether you can recover a crypto wallet depends on who controls it and what recovery information you still have. For a self-custody wallet, a usable recovery phrase, private key, or backup is generally essential; there is ordinarily no password reset if all of them are gone. If the wallet is an exchange account, use the exchange’s official account-recovery process instead.
First identify what kind of wallet you have
A self-custody wallet gives you control of the keys that authorize transactions. Wallet software or a hardware device helps you use those keys, but it does not give the wallet maker a way to recreate them if they are lost. An account at a cryptocurrency exchange is different: the platform controls the account and may be able to help restore access through its official support process. Ethereum.org’s wallet guidance explains the limits of recovering a self-custody wallet.
Before taking action, make a private inventory of what remains. Do not send this information to anyone offering help.
- A recovery phrase, sometimes called a seed phrase or wallet backup.
- A private key, encrypted wallet file, or wallet backup.
- The original phone, computer, or hardware wallet, even if it is damaged or inaccessible.
- For an exchange account: the account email, password-recovery options, and access to its configured authentication methods.
Choose the recovery route that matches your situation
You still have the recovery phrase
Follow the wallet maker’s current official instructions and use a wallet or device compatible with the phrase’s recovery standard. Check the words and their order carefully. For example, BitBox says its BitBox02 or another trusted BIP-39-compatible hardware wallet can restore a wallet from 12 or 24 words; the relevant wallet’s documentation should confirm compatibility before you enter anything. BitBox’s recovery guidance warns against entering a phrase into websites, browsers, ordinary apps, password managers, cloud storage, photos, or notes.

Exodus also says its wallet can be restored with its 12-word phrase entered in the correct order. Anyone who obtains that phrase may take the wallet’s assets, so enter it only in a recovery flow you have verified through the wallet maker’s official channels. Your device is broken or lost, but you have the phrase
The device does not contain coins in the way a physical wallet contains cash. Restoring compatible wallet software or hardware reconnects you to the blockchain addresses controlled by the recovery material. A replacement hardware wallet may help if you want a physical device, but confirm in the manufacturer’s official documentation that it supports the wallet’s recovery method before buying. A new device cannot compensate for an incompatible recovery method or a lost phrase.

You have an exchange account
Open the exchange’s official website or app by navigating there yourself, then use its account-recovery or support process. Do not trust recovery links in unsolicited messages, and never disclose one-time authentication codes to someone who contacts you. Exchange support may help restore access to the platform account; it cannot reverse a completed, irreversible on-chain transfer. Ethereum.org’s wallet guidance distinguishes platform accounts from self-custody wallets.
You lost the phrase and private key
If this is a self-custody wallet and all usable recovery material is gone, there is ordinarily no company, support agent, or password reset that can recreate the keys. Ethereum.org says funds cannot be recovered without the seed phrase or private keys. Ethereum.org’s guidance on lost wallet access describes this limit.

If you still have an encrypted wallet file, a partial phrase, or a password you may have used, a specialist may be able to assess whether that information is sufficient to attempt recovery. An assessment or advertised service is not a guarantee. Do not hand over your recovery phrase or private key to find out whether a provider can help.
You think someone else has access
Act as though the recovery phrase or key is exposed. If assets remain, move them to a new wallet with a new recovery phrase that has not been exposed. Restoring the compromised phrase on another device does not make it safe: anyone with that phrase can still control the wallet. Kraken’s security guidance recommends moving remaining funds to a safe location or a new wallet. Kraken’s wallet-security guidance covers this response.

Also secure related email and exchange accounts, review active sessions, and remove suspicious apps or access where appropriate. Do not use the suspected compromised wallet as the destination for funds you move.

A recovery phrase is effectively control of the wallet. Anyone who gets it may take the assets, so treat it like a key rather than a support credential.

- Never share a phrase, private key, PIN, password, or authentication code with a person claiming to help. Ethereum.org says, “Never share your seed phrase with anyone claiming to help you recover your wallet.” Ethereum.org’s lost-access FAQ gives this warning.
- Trezor likewise says, “Never share your wallet backup (recovery seed) with anyone!” It advises initiating contact through official channels. Trezor’s security guidance on scams and phishing explains what information scammers may request.
- Do not put secrets in an initial email or chat, or upload them to a recovery service’s form. A provider asking for the phrase itself is a serious warning sign.
- Describe the problem and the type of wallet without sending secret material. If you are considering a provider, verify its identity, process, scope, and fees independently before sharing even a wallet file.
What a paid recovery service may—and may not—do
Some providers advertise help with encrypted wallet files, forgotten passwords, incomplete phrases, or old devices. Blockchain.com describes partner assistance for lost passwords, backup phrases, and encrypted files, including identity checks; other providers describe their own recovery services. These are descriptions of services offered, not independent proof that a particular wallet can be recovered. Blockchain.com’s wallet recovery page describes its process.
Provider-published fees and success-based terms are commercial terms, not recovery-rate statistics. For example, one provider advertises a 20% fee on recovered funds, but that figure is the provider’s stated fee, not an industry-wide rate or evidence of likely success. The provider’s published terms should be checked directly because they may change. No service can bypass the ordinary cryptographic limit when all keys and backups are absent.
Before engaging anyone, establish what information they will assess, whether they charge upfront or only on success, how sensitive files are handled, and what happens if recovery fails. Never disclose a phrase or private key as a condition of an initial assessment.
