On a supported Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, open the Quick panel, tap Screen recorder, choose what to capture, then tap Start recording. Use the on-screen controls to pause or stop; the finished video is saved in Gallery. The recorder is built into supported devices, so you usually do not need to install an app.
Check that your Galaxy supports Screen recorder
Samsung describes the built-in feature as available on Galaxy phones and tablets running One UI 2 or later, but availability still depends on the model. Samsung’s regional support pages may list different supported devices; the Canada page applies to devices sold in Canada. Check your exact model’s Samsung support information if the tile or setting is missing rather than assuming every Galaxy A, S, or Z device has the same support or options.

Samsung Ireland Support: How to record your screen on your Samsung Galaxy device
Start, control, and find a screen recording
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick panel. On some versions, swipe down again to expand all Quick settings.
- Tap Screen recorder. If the tile is not there, open the panel editor, find Screen recorder in the available buttons, and add it to the panel. The editor’s label and layout can differ by software version.
- Choose the sound source and any capture options offered, then tap Start recording. Wait for the countdown before interacting with the screen.
- Use the recording toolbar to pause, resume, or stop. After stopping, open Gallery to view the video. The exact album or storage location can differ by software version and settings.
Choose sound and capture options before recording
Available controls vary by model and software. Depending on your device, you may be able to choose no sound, media sound, or microphone audio; record the full screen or a selected area; show taps; adjust video quality or size; or display a front-camera overlay. Not every device offers every choice.

- Sound: Choose media sound for audio playing on the device, microphone for narration where available, or no sound if you want a silent clip. Confirm the selected option before starting.
- Capture area: Use full-screen recording for general demonstrations. If selected-area capture is available, it can keep unrelated screen content out of the video.
- Show taps: Enable this for tutorials where viewers need to follow your touch inputs; leave it off when touch indicators would distract from the content.
- Video quality or size: Higher-quality settings can make details easier to see but generally create larger files. Choose according to the detail the viewer needs and the storage available.
- Front-camera overlay: If offered, this adds a small view of you over the screen recording. Its position and availability depend on the device.
To review the available controls, Samsung US directs users to Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder. Menu wording and placement may differ by software version.
Recording duration and file-size limits
Samsung Canada’s guidance, updated July 16, 2026, distinguishes between software generations: it says Android 10 (One UI 2.5) recordings are limited to one hour or 4 GB, while Android 11 (One UI 3.0) or later has no file-size or recording-time limit. That statement is not a promise of unlimited practical recording: available storage and the device’s capabilities still matter.

Why a screen recording may not work
The Screen recorder tile is missing
Open the Quick panel editor and add the Screen recorder tile if it appears among the available buttons. If it is not available, check the exact device model and software support; Samsung notes that support varies by model.
The video or app screen is blocked
Some protected photos, videos, apps, and websites prevent screen capture. Samsung’s US support page cautions, “Not all screens or apps allow recordings or screenshots.” A blocked capture is a content restriction, not necessarily a recorder fault.

You are trying to record a call
Samsung US says Screen recorder will not record phone calls, VOIP calls, or video calls. The built-in feature is intended for other on-screen activity, not call recording.
The resulting clip is too large or ends sooner than expected
Check the quality and video-size options on your model, then confirm that the device has enough free storage. On Android 10 with One UI 2.5, Samsung Canada specifies the one-hour-or-4-GB cap; do not apply that older-generation limit to later software or treat the later guidance as overriding available-storage constraints.
