Use OBS Game Capture for the game, but do not assume it will record Xbox achievement notifications. If the toast is missing, test a separate Display Capture source; an older OBS forum suggestion says Windows 10 capture mode may capture Game Bar, but results are not guaranteed. Make a short local recording on your own PC and inspect it before streaming.
Why the achievement notification may not appear
Xbox Game Bar is a Windows gaming overlay that opens with Windows key + G. Microsoft also lists Windows key + Alt + G to start or stop a recording in full-screen PC games. Game Bar’s Capture widget can record clips and take screenshots, but that does not mean OBS will capture every Game Bar element. Microsoft’s Game Bar keyboard shortcuts describe those controls.
Xbox Wire’s October 22, 2019 announcement said an Achievements overlay was being added to Game Bar and that achievement notifications would open Game Bar. Treat that as a dated feature description, not a guarantee of identical behavior across current Xbox app, Windows, and notification configurations. Xbox Wire’s announcement records what the feature offered at the time.
OBS documents Game Capture as a source for DirectX or OpenGL games. Its optional Capture third-party overlays property is off by default and may conflict with Game Capture, so capturing the game successfully does not establish that an achievement toast will also be recorded. OBS Game Capture documentation explains the source’s behavior.

Choose an OBS source for the notification

Set up and test the capture
- Launch the game from the Xbox PC app. Microsoft describes the app as a place to browse and launch Game Pass titles. While playing, use Windows key + G to open Game Bar if needed. Microsoft’s Xbox app overview
- Add Game Capture for gameplay. In OBS, add a Game Capture source and choose the game window or full-screen mode that matches how you play. Keep this as the gameplay source; it is not an assured achievement-notification recorder. OBS Game Capture documentation
- If the toast is absent, add a separate Display Capture source as a test. Open that source’s properties and check which capture-method options your installed OBS version provides. The 2020 forum suggestion specifically refers to Windows 10 capture mode for Game Bar; source labels and behavior can change over time. OBS forum discussion
- Make a short local recording with a visible overlay. Use a real achievement notification if available, or another Game Bar overlay to check whether that overlay layer appears. Watch the saved clip before relying on the setup in a livestream. This verifies your own Windows build, OBS version, game, and source configuration; it is not a guarantee for every toast.
- Check the whole frame for privacy. If Display Capture shows the notification but also records the desktop, review what else is visible before streaming. Arrange the scene carefully and do not assume a crop will preserve the notification unless you have confirmed it in the recording.
Where Game Bar clips are saved
Microsoft says clips recorded through Game Bar are stored locally and appear in the relevant game’s Xbox app hub. That applies to Game Bar recordings; it does not mean OBS recordings are saved there. Microsoft’s Game Bar recording guide
