To record audio in Notability, open a note and tap the microphone control; tap the stop control when you are finished. You can also tap the Library microphone shortcut to create a new note and start recording immediately. While you play the recording back, Notability syncs your annotations with the audio so you can jump to the moment associated with a word, sketch, or photo.
Record audio in an existing note

Open the note where you want to save the recording.

Tap the microphone control. An input meter and timer appear when recording has started.

Tap the stop control when you are done.
For the Library shortcut, tap its microphone control instead of opening a note. Notability creates a new note and begins recording. See Notability’s Getting Started guide for the Library controls.

Play back a recording and find a note-taking moment
Press Play in the note to review its audio. Select the Hand tool, then tap a word, sketch, or photo to jump to the audio moment associated with that annotation. You can also drag the playback control to scrub through the recording, use the ten-second skip controls, or change the speed in Playback Settings: 0.7x, Normal, 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x.
Edit a recording

Open the note options and recording list.

Select Edit, then choose the recording you want to change.

Use the available controls to trim, split, rename, merge, or delete recordings. Imported audio cannot be merged.

Share a note with its recording
When sharing, choose PDF and enable Recordings. Notability packages the note and recordings in a ZIP file. Alternatively, share the note in Notability format to include its recordings.
Import existing audio
Notability’s import guide lists MP3, MP4, and M4A files. To bring in audio from another iOS app, share the file to Notability. Content you add to the note while imported audio plays syncs with that audio. The same listed file types can be transcribed. Follow the steps in Notability’s audio import guide.

Use recordings and transcripts effectively
Long recordings
Notability recommends starting a new recording after one hour because a long recording may be split into one-hour segments.
Transcription availability and audio quality
Notability’s Audio Transcripts support page says transcription requires an internet connection and is unavailable in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. It describes high-quality, lecture, single-speaker, and single-language recordings as types that transcribe well. Low-quality audio, movies or theater, multiple speakers, and mixed languages may be harder to transcribe accurately.

Transcripts can be reviewed in the note’s Learn panel and copied into a note or another application. The support page currently says Notability Plus subscribers have unlimited transcripts and that live transcripts are a Pro feature; subscription names and entitlements can change, so check the page for current plan details. For questions such as disabling transcription, consult the same support page.
Audio privacy
Notability states: “We do not access, listen to, or review the audio recordings beyond the automated transcription process or share the audio recordings with any third parties for any purpose without your consent except as required to fulfill our legal obligations under applicable law.”
