In PowerPoint’s desktop app, open Record and choose From Beginning or From Current Slide. Turn on your microphone if you want narration, record and review the slides, then export the presentation if you need a standalone video. The recording is saved with the presentation; it is not automatically a video file. PowerPoint for the web does not support recording a slide show, according to Microsoft Support.

Record a slideshow in PowerPoint

The button names vary by version. In the newer recording experience, use Record; in the classic interface, use Slide Show > Record Slide Show. Microsoft’s instructions cover Microsoft 365 and several desktop versions for Windows and Mac, but the newer interface may not have rolled out to every organization. See Microsoft’s recording workflow for version details.

  1. Open the presentation. Select Record > From Beginning to capture the full deck, or From Current Slide to start at the slide you have selected. In the classic interface, go to Slide Show > Record Slide Show and choose where to begin.
  2. Set up your microphone and camera. Narration can be recorded without camera video. Use an external microphone if you prefer, but one is not required. Depending on your version, recording views may include Teleprompter or Presenter View.
  3. Record and advance through the slides. Speak after each slide transition has finished. Microsoft notes that audio and video are not recorded during transitions, so narration spoken while advancing may be missed. PowerPoint can capture slide timings, narration, ink, pointer gestures, animation activity and, if enabled, camera video.
  4. Review the result. Preview the recording and re-record any slide that needs a retake. Recordings are associated with individual slides, so you can redo a slide without recording the entire presentation again.

For the classic recording controls, Microsoft’s Record a slide show with narration and slide timings guide provides additional instructions.

Record narration or just one slide

To record narration, enable the microphone before starting. Camera video is optional. You can record the whole presentation or begin from a selected slide. If only one slide needs new narration or a retake, select that slide and start recording from the current slide rather than redoing the whole deck.

Export the recording as a video

A recorded presentation remains a PowerPoint file until you export it. To create a video, use the available Record or Export option, or go to File > Export > Create a Video. Microsoft documents MP4 and WMV output. The exact controls and media behavior can differ by platform and version; see its video export guidance.

In the newer export workflow Microsoft describes, MP4 is Full HD 1080p by default, and slides without recorded timings use a five-second default. These are documented defaults for that workflow, not guarantees for every version or platform. Export settings can be customized.

On Mac, Microsoft says narrated audio plays in an exported video, but other embedded media files do not. Slides have a uniform duration unless you set individual timings or record the slide show to establish them. If your deck relies on embedded media, confirm the result in the version you will use; see Microsoft’s PowerPoint for Mac export guidance.

Do not confuse slide-show recording with screen recording

Insert > Screen Recording captures activity in a selected area of your computer screen for insertion on a slide. It is not the command for recording your slide-show narration and timings. For that, use the Record workflow or the classic Record Slide Show command. See Microsoft’s screen-recording instructions.
