You can record a silent GIF of part of your Chromebook screen with ChromeOS Screen Capture—no separate recorder needed. Open Screen Capture, choose Screen record, select Record a partial screen, then choose Record GIF from the format menu. The GIF workflow is for a selected area; choose video instead if you need sound or camera input.
How to record a GIF on your Chromebook
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open Screen Capture. If your keyboard does not have a Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as an alternative.
- In the bottom toolbar, select Screen record.
- Choose Record a partial screen, then select the area you want to capture.
- Open the format menu and select Record GIF.
- When you are finished, select Stop recording on screen or press Search + Shift + X.
Google’s Chromebook screen capture instructions document GIF recording in the partial-screen flow. They do not establish that full-screen or window recordings can be saved as GIFs.
GIF or video: which should you choose?

Google’s current help page states: “GIFs don’t capture audio or video input.” The audio choices documented for video—including device audio, microphone, or both—do not add sound to GIF output.
Where the GIF is saved
By default, screen captures are saved in Downloads and copied to the clipboard. To use another destination, open the capture settings and choose a different folder. If you do not see the file in Downloads, check whether the save folder was changed.

Does GIF recording work on every Chromebook?
Google’s May 28, 2024 Chromebook feature announcement described GIF recording as available across Chromebooks and said many announced features would reach existing devices through an automatic update. Earlier, Google’s ChromeOS 122 Enterprise and Education release notes said the feature would arrive as early as ChromeOS 124.
Those are launch-era statements, not a guarantee for every managed Chromebook or configuration today. Google’s current help page documents the steps but does not specify a minimum ChromeOS version or a per-device availability list. If you do not see Record GIF, check with your administrator on a managed device and make sure ChromeOS is up to date.
