Restore the internet connection, then check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to see whether the event is still active and whether YouTube is receiving your encoder’s feed. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL with the current stream key, restart its output, and wait for the preview to return. YouTube does not promise that every event interrupted by an outage can resume or retain the same audience session and archive, so let the event’s status guide what you do next.
Reconnect the encoder to the existing YouTube event
This process is for podcast broadcasts sent to YouTube Live through an encoder. YouTube’s documented connection process does not have a separate recovery path for podcasts.

Restore and test the connection
Make sure the streaming computer or device has working internet access. Test upload speed, not just download speed: the encoder must send video and audio out to YouTube. If the upload connection remains unreliable, YouTube’s guidance is to contact your internet service provider.

Check the event in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live / Live Control Room. Check the event’s status and stream health, including any error message. The event status matters: do not assume a disconnected event is still accepting a feed.

Verify the encoder destination and key
In the encoder, check that the destination is the intended YouTube stream URL and that it is using the current stream key shown for the event in Live Control Room. The URL and key tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it.

Resume sending and wait for the preview
Start or resume streaming from the encoder. Watch Live Control Room for the preview to return; do not treat the encoder’s “streaming” indicator alone as confirmation that YouTube is receiving the feed.

Respond to a startup or key error
If the encoder reports a startup error, copy the stream key displayed in Live Control Room into the encoder and try again. Resetting the key is not a routine outage fix. YouTube describes resetting it as appropriate in cases such as a compromised key; use the key shown for the event when the error indicates a key or startup problem.

If the preview does not come back
Check the encoder’s own output and error messages, confirm the audio/video source routing, and update the encoder if needed. Retest outbound connectivity. If Live Control Room shows that the event has ended or cannot accept the feed, use the controls there to create or manage a new stream rather than assuming the original event can continue.

YouTube’s official guidance does not specify one reconnection timeout or guarantee that reconnecting will preserve the same live-event URL, audience session, or archive. The event’s actual status in Live Control Room is the best available guide.
Find which part of the connection failed

| Event state | Check the event status and preview. If it is ended or otherwise cannot accept the feed, use the available Live Control Room controls instead of presuming it can resume. |
Reduce the chance of another connection break
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube Help recommends keeping available upload bandwidth 20% above the stream bitrate. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”
- Choose settings for the connection you have. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and selecting a quality that is reliable on that connection. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; for example, YouTube Help lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. Do not treat those figures as universal requirements for every podcast stream.
- Use appropriate encoder settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; choosing RTMPS does not itself recover a feed after an outage.
- Consider backup connectivity only if it fits your situation. A backup connection may help some creators, but its availability, data limits, and upload performance depend on location and provider. A new router, Ethernet cable, UPS, or mobile hotspot is not a universally required reconnection purchase.
Do you need to buy anything?
No physical product is required by YouTube’s general reconnect workflow. First check the connection, encoder, stream URL and key, and event status. Buy or add equipment only if diagnosing your particular setup shows that it addresses a specific problem; the official recovery guidance does not establish one item as a necessary fix for all outages.
