A phishing message is a fake email, text, or other message designed to trick you into sharing information, clicking a link, opening an attachment, or installing software. Don’t click or reply to verify it. Check the claim through a website or phone number you already trust, report the message, and choose recovery steps based on what you did or disclosed.

How can you tell if an email or text is phishing?

Phishing messages imitate real companies, government agencies, coworkers, friends, or other trusted senders. A familiar name, logo, or polished design does not prove a message is genuine. Focus on what it asks you to do and whether the request makes sense in context.

Warning signs to check

  • Unexpected urgency or emotional pressure: The message says your account will be closed, a payment is overdue, or you must act immediately to avoid a problem or claim a reward.
  • A request for sensitive information: It asks you to confirm a password, account details, personal information, or financial data through a link or reply.
  • An unexpected invoice, refund, or account alert: It claims there is suspicious sign-in activity, a payment issue, an unfamiliar charge, or a government refund you did not expect.
  • A sender or link mismatch: The display name may not match the full sender address, or the destination behind a link may not match the organization or wording shown in the message. Shortened or unfamiliar links deserve extra caution.
  • An unexpected attachment: An invoice, document, or other file you were not expecting may be used to deliver malware or start a scam.

Spelling mistakes and awkward writing can be clues, but they are not required for a message to be fraudulent. CISA’s September 2024 tip sheet notes that poor writing or misspellings are less common as an indicator than they once were. No single visual clue settles the question; verify the request independently. CISA’s phishing tip sheet

What to check in Gmail

Google recommends checking whether the sender’s email address matches the name shown, whether the message is authenticated, whether the link destination matches its description, and whether the From header may be misleading. These checks can help you spot inconsistencies, but a message that passes a visual check should still be verified if the request is unexpected. How to verify a suspicious message safely

  1. Do not use the message to verify itself. Don’t click its links, open unexpected attachments, call its phone number, or reply with personal information. The FTC’s April 2025 guidance puts it plainly: “Don’t click links or download attachments in unexpected messages.” FTC: Protect yourself from phishing scams
  2. Go to a known official channel. Type an address you already know, use the organization’s official app, or call a number from a trusted source such as a statement or the back of your card—not one in the suspicious message.
  3. Confirm personal requests separately. If a message appears to come from a friend or coworker, contact them through a separate, familiar channel and ask whether they sent it.
  4. Report and delete the message. Use your email or messaging service’s phishing-report control. If it concerns a workplace account, follow your organization’s reporting procedure.

What to do if you received a phishing message but did not interact

Don’t reply, click, download, or use an unsubscribe link in a message you suspect is fraudulent. Report it using your provider’s phishing or junk control, then delete it. If the message names a company or service, check with that organization through a known official site or trusted number rather than through the message.

For U.S. consumers, the FTC also recommends forwarding phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org, forwarding phishing texts to 7726, and reporting the attempt at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These reporting routes are U.S.-specific; use the appropriate authority in your country if you are elsewhere. FTC phishing guidance

What to do if you clicked a link or opened an attachment

Clicking a link is not the same as entering a password or payment details, but it can still expose you to a scam. Close the page and do not enter information or approve a prompt. If an attachment may have downloaded or installed software, update your security software, run a scan, and follow its instructions to remove anything it identifies. A scan is a useful response step, not proof that a device is completely safe. FTC: Phishing scams can be hard to spot

What to do if you entered a password or sensitive information

If you entered a password

Go directly to the real service using its known address or app, then secure the account. Change the exposed password and any other account password that reused it. Review account activity and recovery settings, and enable multi-factor authentication if available. If you cannot access the account, use the service’s official account-recovery process.

If you shared bank, card, or identity information

Contact the bank, card issuer, or other affected institution using a verified phone number or official app. Explain what information was exposed and ask what protective steps it recommends. If sensitive identity or financial information may be compromised, use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov for U.S.-specific recovery steps tailored to the information lost. Changing a password alone cannot undo every possible consequence of disclosing other information. FTC: How to recognize and avoid phishing scams

What to do about a phishing message at work

Report the message promptly through your organization’s established process and notify its IT or security team. Don’t forward it to coworkers as a warning unless your organization’s procedure tells you to; forwarding can spread risk or mishandle message data.

How to reduce the risk of phishing

  • Keep security software current and turn on automatic updates for your devices and applications.
  • Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) where available. It adds a check beyond a password, though it does not make it safe to trust unexpected messages or approve unrecognized sign-in prompts.
  • Back up important files so you have another copy if a device or account is compromised.
  • Consider a security key as one MFA option. The FTC lists security keys as an example of a possession-based credential. A FIDO2 key is optional, and whether it works depends on the account and device; it is not required to recognize, report, or recover from phishing.

The FTC’s April 2025 alert says email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024, but it gives no count or percentage on that page. FTC: Protect yourself from phishing scams
