If your Android screen still responds, try the phone’s on-screen power menu or Quick Settings power icon and choose Restart if it’s available. The exact route depends on the manufacturer, model, and software version. If the phone is frozen, the documented force-restart steps from Google and Samsung use physical buttons, so they won’t solve a broken power key.
First, check whether the screen responds
Tap or swipe the screen. If it responds, use an on-screen power control if your phone provides one. If it does not, the phone may need a force restart, which typically depends on physical buttons.
Restart from the screen when it still works
Samsung Galaxy: use the Quick panel
- Swipe down from the top-right of the screen to open the Quick panel.
- Tap the power icon.
- Tap Restart.
This Samsung-documented method opens the power menu without using the Side key. Quick panel layout and labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version. See Samsung’s Galaxy device troubleshooting instructions.
Google Pixel: the documented menu still needs buttons
Google’s Pixel instructions do not provide a button-free restart route. On Pixel 6 and later, hold Power + Volume up to open the power menu, then tap Restart. On Pixel 5a and earlier, hold the Power button for about 30 seconds or until the phone restarts. These steps require the Power button; they are not workarounds for a broken key. Check Google’s Pixel power instructions for the applicable model.

Other Android phones
Menu placement and button behavior differ across manufacturers and models, so there is no single Android restart path. Look for a power icon in Quick Settings or the manufacturer’s equivalent panel. If you cannot find one, check the support instructions for your exact model and software version rather than trying a button combination intended for another device.
If the phone is frozen
A force restart is different from choosing Restart in an on-screen menu: it is intended for an unresponsive phone and uses hardware buttons in the cited Google and Samsung examples.

- Android guidance from Google: Hold the Power button for about 60 seconds. This still requires a working Power button. Google’s Android freeze troubleshooting recommends checking with the device manufacturer if the steps do not work.
- Samsung Galaxy: Hold the Side key and Volume down together for more than seven seconds. This requires the Side key, so it may not help if that key is broken. See Samsung’s Galaxy troubleshooting steps.
These instructions are specific to the guidance from Google and Samsung; do not assume either combination applies to every Android phone.

The official instructions cited here do not establish a universal software workaround for a physically unusable power key. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact phone, or contact its support service. Samsung directs users whose device still will not turn off to its Support Center.
