On most U.S. packaged foods, find the “Added Sugars” line directly beneath “Total Sugars” in the Nutrition Facts panel. Check the serving size, then use the added-sugar grams or % Daily Value (%DV) to compare products. The “Includes” wording means those added-sugar grams are already counted in Total Sugars.

Where to find added sugars on the label

  1. Check serving size and servings per package. The numbers on the Nutrition Facts panel apply to one labeled serving. If you eat more or less than that amount, adjust the figures accordingly.
  2. Find “Total Sugars.” The indented “Added Sugars” line usually appears immediately below it.
  3. Read the grams and %DV. These show the amount of added sugars in one serving and how it compares with the FDA’s Daily Value.

For example, a label that says “Includes 7g Added Sugars” is telling you that those 7 grams are already part of the Total Sugars figure. FDA gives an example of yogurt with 15g Total Sugars, including 7g Added Sugars and 8g naturally occurring sugars. Do not add the added-sugar number to Total Sugars a second time. FDA explains how to read the Added Sugars line.

Total sugars vs. added sugars

Total Sugars includes sugars that occur naturally in foods, such as milk and fruit, as well as any sugars added during processing. Added Sugars identifies sugars added to foods or packaged as sweeteners. FDA’s definition includes sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars in concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. Sugars naturally present in milk, fruits, and vegetables are not classified as added sugars.

The distinction helps explain why two products can have similar Total Sugars but different Added Sugars. The former is the broader amount; the latter isolates the added portion.

How to compare products using grams and %DV

Compare products in a consistent order: first consider serving size and how much you are likely to eat, then compare Added Sugars grams per serving, and use %DV as another quick reference. Comparisons are most useful when serving sizes are alike; if they are not, account for the difference before deciding which has less added sugar in the amount you would actually eat.

Added Sugars %DV per serving FDA’s description
5% DV or less Low source of added sugars
20% DV or more High source of added sugars

The FDA’s Daily Value for added sugars is 50 grams per day, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. It is a reference amount for interpreting labels, not necessarily your personal allowance. FDA’s quick guide describes 5% DV or less as low and 20% DV or more as high; these are per-serving comparison cues, not a judgment that a food is healthy or unhealthy overall. See FDA’s guidance on Added Sugars and %DV.

Does honey or maple syrup count as added sugar?

Yes. Honey and maple syrup count as added sugars on packaged-food labels. There is a label-format exception for single-ingredient sugars and syrups, including pure honey and maple syrup: the Added Sugars line may show %DV without grams, while the grams may appear in a footnote. An absent gram figure on that line does not mean the product contains zero added sugars. FDA says this format avoids implying that a single-ingredient sweetener had other ingredients added to it. FDA describes this label requirement and exception.

Use the ingredient list as a second check

The ingredient list can help identify sweeteners and provide context about a product’s ingredients. For the declared quantitative amount of added sugars per serving, use the Added Sugars line on the Nutrition Facts panel. Consider it alongside serving size and the rest of the panel rather than treating one number as a complete assessment of the food.

What the Daily Value does—and does not—mean

The 50-gram Daily Value is tied to a 2,000-calorie diet; individual calorie needs can differ. FDA also reports the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommendation to keep added sugars below 10% of total calories, which FDA’s example translates to 50 grams on a 2,000-calorie diet. Neither the label’s %DV nor that example establishes a personalized target for every reader. A limited amount of added sugar can fit within an overall healthy eating pattern, and the label is a tool for comparing and making informed choices.
