To read waveform data from an Agilent 54621A over RS-232, first confirm that the oscilloscope has the optional RS-232-C interface module installed. Then connect a correctly wired serial cable, match the computer’s serial settings to the scope, and use the 54600-series programmer commands to select and retrieve the waveform. The model name alone does not guarantee that the serial interface is fitted.

1. Confirm the RS-232-C interface is installed

The 54600-series programmer guide says remote programming requires a GPIB or RS-232-C interface added to the oscilloscope’s rear panel; it names the 54651A as an example RS-232-C module. Inspect the actual instrument before buying a cable or troubleshooting software. The guide is available from Keysight’s 54600 Series Oscilloscopes Programmer’s Guide.

2. Choose a cable and match the serial settings

Use the connection diagram and pinout for the installed interface module to choose a cable that matches both the scope and the computer. The 54600-series user guide names Agilent cable 34398A, but that does not establish that every serial cable or adapter is interchangeable. A computer without a native serial port may need a USB-to-RS-232 adapter; verify its drivers, connector, wiring, and handshake support for your setup. See the 54600-series user guide for the documented cable details.

Configure both the scope and the computer/controller identically. The programmer guide lists these settings:

LIANSHU Nexstar RS 232 PC Interface Cable(RS 232 DB9Pin Female to RJ11 4P4C) L=6FT Black (2Pack)
  • Connector A: RS232 DB9Pin Female Connector ; Connector B: RJ11 4P4C Gold Plated Connector.
  • The LIANSHU Nexstar RS 232 PC Interface Cable Nterface your NexStar Telescope With Your Laptop Or PC Control Telescope By Clicking On Sky Maps On Computer Monitor.
  • RS-232 Jack On One End Of Cable, Standard Serial Connector On Other Certain Telescopes Allow Downloading New Data Into Database
  • Nexstar RS 232 PC Interface Cable L=6FT Length
  • Baud rate: 1200, 2400, 9600, or 19,200
  • Data bits: 8
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Parity: none
  • Handshake: DTR or XON/XOFF

Start with a supported baud rate, such as 9600, only if you set the same value at both ends. The guide states that baud rate, stop bits, parity, handshake protocol, and data bits must match for RS-232-C communication to work. With XON/XOFF flow control, the receiver can pause transmission with XOFF and resume it with XON; the guide warns a controller sending to the oscilloscope not to send more than 32 bytes after receiving XOFF.

3. Request a waveform using the programmer command set

Once the serial link is configured, use the command syntax and message terminator specified in the programmer guide that matches your instrument. The general retrieval sequence is to choose the waveform source, select the data format and point count if required, request the waveform preamble, and then request the waveform data. Do not copy command spellings from an unverified example: confirm the exact commands, supported formats, and termination behavior in the official guide for the 54621A.

Wirenest 25 ft VISCA Control Cable, DB9 Female to 8-Pin Mini-DIN Male
  • CHOOSE BY CONNECTOR — Use this cable when your computer, joystick, or control system requires a female DB9 cable connection and the camera has an 8-pin mini-DIN VISCA IN port.
  • DB9 FEMALE TO 8-PIN MALE — One female DB9 connector and one male 8-pin mini-DIN connector, wired according to the standard Sony VISCA RS-232 pinout.
  • MOLDED AND SHIELDED — Factory-molded connectors and foil shielding provide a durable serial camera-control connection for permanent and portable installations.
  • CAMERA-CONTROL DATA ONLY — Carries serial VISCA commands for compatible camera functions such as pan, tilt, zoom, focus, and iris. It does not carry video, audio, Ethernet, or camera power.
  • VERIFY BEFORE BUYING — Confirm that the control source requires a female DB9 cable end and the camera uses an 8-pin mini-DIN VISCA RS-232 connection. Not for VISCA over IP or RS-422 ports.

Returned values depend on the format selected. ASCII data is text; BYTE and WORD formats represent raw sample codes and must be decoded as documented. For calibrated voltage-versus-time values, use the preamble’s scaling fields—including the time increment and origin, and the voltage increment, origin, and reference—instead of treating raw sample codes as volts or seconds. The official programmer guide is the authority for interpreting the response.

4. Choose between IntuiLink and a custom script

Approach What it offers What to verify
IntuiLink Data Capture The user guide describes downloading waveform data and saving binary or text files, with the 54621A/21D distinguished from other variants. Whether the legacy download is still available, supports the 54621A, and works with your current Windows version is not established by the cited guide. Check the Keysight downloads page and package requirements before relying on it.
Custom serial script Direct command-level access to select a source, request data, and handle the returned format. You must implement the documented serial protocol, command syntax, response parsing, and preamble-based scaling. Exact commands and current host-software compatibility are not established here.

IntuiLink is the more ready-made route if a compatible legacy package is available; scripting offers more control but requires careful handling of the command protocol and waveform scaling. Neither route removes the need for the installed interface module and a correctly configured serial connection.

5. Troubleshoot a connection that returns no data

  • No serial response: Recheck that the RS-232-C module is present, the cable is wired for that module, and the selected computer port is the one actually connected.
  • Unreadable characters or intermittent transfers: Compare baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity, and handshake on both ends. A mismatch in any of these settings can prevent reliable communication.
  • Transfer stalls: Check whether the chosen flow-control method is supported and configured at both ends. In XON/XOFF mode, honor XOFF and do not send more than 32 additional bytes to the scope after it.
  • Data arrives but values look wrong: Confirm the selected waveform format and parse it accordingly. Apply the documented preamble scaling rather than interpreting raw byte or word codes directly as engineering units.
  • Legacy capture software will not install or connect: Verify the specific IntuiLink package’s operating-system and instrument support; the older guide’s software description does not establish compatibility with modern Windows releases.
