A rotating 3D map is an angled view of the ground, not a change to the map’s underlying locations. To stay oriented, distinguish moving the map from rotating it: pan to change the area on screen, zoom to change scale, rotate to change which direction faces the top of the screen, and tilt to change the camera angle. Check the compass when direction is unclear; use a north reset or switch to a top-down view to regain your bearings.
What a rotating 3D map is showing
A 3D map can be understood as a flat map viewed by a camera at an angle above the ground. Apple’s MapKit documentation describes the camera using four properties: altitude (its height), pitch (its angle relative to the ground), heading (the direction it faces), and center (the map point at the middle of the screen). At zero pitch, the camera looks straight down for a standard 2D view. Apps may use different labels, but these ideas explain what changes as you navigate.
When heading changes, the map image turns on screen. Its top edge may no longer point north, so a feature appearing to the left of another is not necessarily west of it. Look at the compass or orientation indicator before interpreting directions. The map’s geographic relationships remain; it is your viewing angle and screen orientation that have changed.
Four controls, four different effects
- Pan: Move the map’s center to look at another place. The view does not have to rotate.
- Zoom: Change how much area is visible. Zooming in shows a smaller area in more detail; zooming out shows more surroundings.
- Rotate or change heading: Turn the map so a different direction faces the top of the screen.
- Tilt or change pitch: Change the view from top-down to more oblique, or back again. Buildings and terrain may appear more three-dimensional at an angle.
Some interfaces also use a globe view when you zoom far out. That is still a camera view of mapped places, but the globe can be dragged or rotated as a whole.

How to navigate a 3D map on a desktop
Google Earth: move, zoom, and look around
- Find a place: Use Search to locate the area you want to explore.
- Pan: Drag the map with the mouse to move the view across the globe.
- Zoom: Use the plus and minus controls at the bottom right, or right-drag. Google Earth Help also documents using the mouse wheel or touchpad scrolling.
- Explore around your location: Hold Ctrl while dragging. Google’s desktop guidance also describes left-clicking and dragging to look in a direction.
- Switch perspective: Use the 3D/2D control to move between an orbiting 3D view and a top-down view.
- Restore direction: Click the compass to face true north. After clicking the map, press
rto return to the default view.
These are Google Earth desktop controls, not a universal set of mouse gestures. Google Earth documents different tilt gestures for Mac and Windows/Linux, so check the instructions for your platform if you need a particular tilt action. A computer mouse is optional; the documented controls also include on-screen buttons and touchpad scrolling.
How to navigate a 3D map on iPhone
Apple Maps uses touch gestures for movement, scale, rotation, and tilt. These instructions are for the iPhone interface described in Apple’s guide; controls and immersive features can vary by app version and region.

- Rotate: Touch and hold with two fingers, then rotate them.
- Tilt: Drag two fingers up or down to adjust the angle of a 3D map.
- Show north: Tap the compass after rotating the map.
- Return to 2D: Tap 2D for a flat, top-down map.
When you zoom out far enough, Apple Maps may change to a globe that you can drag to rotate. Apple notes that immersive map features are not available in every country or region.
How to recover when the view feels disorienting
- Check the compass. Use the orientation indicator to see which way the map is facing. In Google Earth, clicking the compass restores a true-north-facing globe; Apple Maps’ compass shows north after rotation.
- Reset the heading. Use the compass or the interface’s north-facing reset if one is available. This changes orientation without requiring you to find the location again.
- Flatten the view. Switch to 2D or a top-down camera angle when perspective makes nearby locations or directions difficult to compare.
- Resume with smaller changes. Rotate or tilt in short increments, checking the compass as you go.
Why controls differ between map interfaces
“Rotate,” “heading,” “tilt,” and “pitch” describe related map-camera actions, but the controls depend on the specific product, device, and platform. For example, Google’s 3D Maps JavaScript API provides controls for zoom, moving the map center, changing camera heading, adjusting tilt, and resetting to a northerly heading. That is documentation for developers using the web API; it should not be treated as the exact interface or gesture set in every consumer Google Maps app.
