To read a thermal image, check the temperature scale and measurement settings before treating a color or displayed temperature as a real surface temperature. A thermal camera detects infrared radiation; a radiometric camera uses that signal and settings such as emissivity and reflected apparent temperature to estimate surface temperature. Reflections, focus, distance, and the target’s surface finish can all affect that estimate.
How do I read a thermal image?
Start with the scale legend, its units, and the image’s measurement settings. The colors show how values are mapped across a selected temperature range; they are not universal temperature labels. A red area does not always mean the same temperature from one image to another.
Also distinguish a thermal image from a temperature measurement. A camera detects infrared radiation, and a radiometric model can process that signal into estimated surface temperatures. Those estimates depend on the camera setup and the target. FLIR notes that measurement accuracy depends on distance, ambient temperature, and the material’s emissivity (FLIR’s guide to using a thermal camera).
What does emissivity mean on a thermal camera?
Emissivity describes how strongly a surface emits infrared radiation compared with an ideal blackbody at the same temperature. In practical terms, it helps the camera estimate how much of the radiation it detects came from the object itself rather than being reflected from its surroundings. FLIR calls emissivity one of the most important measurement parameters to set correctly (FLIR camera documentation).

Emissivity depends on the material and surface finish in the camera’s infrared waveband. Visible color alone does not determine it. A polished surface can have low emissivity and reflect more of its surroundings; painted or oxidized surfaces are generally more emissive. Do not assume that every metal has one fixed emissivity.
Why do shiny objects look wrong in thermal imaging?
A shiny, low-emissivity surface can behave like an infrared mirror. It may reflect a person, heater, hot lamp, cool window, or sky toward the camera. A bright or cold patch can therefore represent the reflected surroundings rather than a hot or cold spot on the object.

Reflected apparent temperature is a camera compensation parameter for radiation reflected from the surroundings, not simply the ordinary air temperature. FLIR recommends considering nearby reflection sources and provides methods for estimating reflected apparent temperature (FLIR camera documentation; ISO Online Browsing Platform terminology). Reflection matters more when emissivity is low.
What do the temperature range and colors mean?
A palette maps colors to temperatures within a selected range, often bounded by minimum and maximum values shown on the screen. If the camera auto-scales that range, the same color may represent different temperatures in separate images. A narrow range can make a modest difference look dramatic; a broad range can make a meaningful difference look subtle.

- When comparing images over time or across areas, keep the temperature span consistent where possible.
- Do not infer an exact temperature from a color alone.
FLIR advises choosing a camera temperature range suited to the expected object temperature (FLIR camera documentation). Some cameras also offer isotherm or color-alarm overlays that highlight pixels above or below a chosen threshold. These indicate values relative to that threshold; they are not an independent diagnosis.
How to make a more dependable temperature estimate
- Focus and frame the target. Focus carefully and make sure the area you want to measure covers enough detector pixels. A sharp-looking image is not automatically a precise measurement.
- Account for the surface. Identify its finish and set an appropriate emissivity value. Treat the number cautiously if the surface is reflective or its emissivity is uncertain.
- Look for reflected sources. Consider the camera-target geometry and whether a heater, lamp, person, sky, or cool opening could be reflected toward the camera.
- Set reflected apparent temperature if required. Use the camera’s model-specific workflow. This setting can materially affect estimates from low-emissivity targets.
- Enter distance and atmospheric details. These matter especially over longer paths. Account for any protective window or external lens in the measurement path.
- Check range and units. Confirm the camera is using a suitable measurement range and note the displayed temperature span before interpreting colors or comparing images.
- Verify important readings. When an accurate point temperature matters, compare with a suitable contact measurement or reference method if safe and feasible. Report the result with appropriate uncertainty rather than unjustified precision.
Camera controls and defaults vary by model, so follow the manufacturer’s measurement guidance rather than assuming one emissivity value or menu path applies to every camera.

Can you estimate emissivity with tape?
FLIR documents a reflector method that compares a high-emissivity tape patch with the surrounding sample after both have reached the same temperature. The method depends on that temperature match: FLIR warns that if the tape and sample are at different temperatures, the emissivity measurement will be wrong (FLIR camera documentation). Treat it as a procedure requiring care, not a universal shortcut.
Can a screenshot give an exact temperature?
Not necessarily. A colorized image may be non-radiometric, or its original measurement metadata may have been lost. Without radiometric data and relevant camera settings, colors alone cannot establish exact object temperatures.
