A ping graph tracks round-trip time (RTT) over time. A brief peak is a latency spike; a higher line that stays elevated is a sustained latency change. To assess packet loss, check whether missing replies continue through later hops and reach the destination: loss shown on one intermediate router alone does not prove that your traffic is being dropped.

What a ping graph shows

Ping measures the time for a probe to reach a target and for a response to return. In most graphs, time runs along the horizontal axis and latency—usually in milliseconds—appears vertically. Check the tool’s legend: colors, labels, sampling intervals, and the way it calculates or displays packet loss vary between programs.

Read the shape over time, not just the latest value. A single rise is a spike; a baseline that remains higher for a period indicates a sustained change. Review the maximum alongside the average, since a few unusually slow replies can be obscured by an average. Where available, minimum and standard deviation help show the range and variability of the measurements.

How to tell a spike from a persistent problem

One isolated peak

Note when it occurred and whether it recurs. One point may reflect a temporary delay or a measurement artifact; it is not enough to identify a cause. Compare the destination’s readings and, if practical, another test before drawing conclusions.

A raised baseline or recurring peaks

If RTT stays elevated, the change is sustained rather than a one-off spike. If peaks recur, record their timing and frequency. Comparing repeated runs can help establish whether the pattern tracks a particular time or persists across conditions.

A high average with a wide spread

Compare the average with the minimum, maximum, and standard deviation when the tool provides them. A consistently high range suggests a different pattern from an otherwise lower range punctuated by occasional large peaks.

How to interpret packet loss on a hop graph

MTR combines traceroute’s path discovery with repeated ping-like measurements, showing latency and reported loss at hops along a route. Read the rows from your source toward the destination, and keep the destination row in view. Cloudflare describes this combination in its MTR troubleshooting guide.

Loss appears at one intermediate hop only

Do not treat this as proof that packets are being lost in transit. A router may limit or filter diagnostic replies, or fail to answer the probe while still forwarding traffic. Check whether later hops, especially the destination, show the same pattern.

Loss begins at a hop and continues downstream

This is stronger evidence that probes are failing somewhere along the path from that point onward, but it does not identify the responsible device or network operator. A rise in latency that begins around one hop and remains higher at later hops is likewise a localization clue, not proof of cause.

Loss reaches the destination

Destination loss is more meaningful than an isolated intermediate-hop result: probes are failing to reach the endpoint or their replies are failing to return. The graph alone cannot distinguish local Wi-Fi or access-link issues from ISP routing, a remote network, or endpoint behavior.

A practical workflow for reading the graph

  1. Confirm the target. Make sure the ping is testing the host you intend to investigate. Run it long enough to see whether the symptom repeats.
  2. Record the time pattern. Note when spikes or missing replies occur, how long they last, and how often they recur.
  3. Read the summary values. Check minimum, average or mean, and maximum RTT, plus variability or standard deviation if shown. Inspect the graph as well as the summary.
  4. Add hop context with MTR. Cloudflare’s example command is mtr -rw www.example.com; its guide also points Windows users to WinMTR. Replace the example host with the target you want to test. See Cloudflare’s MTR instructions.
  5. Compare each hop with those after it. Look for a latency or loss pattern that persists toward the destination. Do not blame an intermediate router just because its row reports unanswered probes.
  6. Repeat and compare. Run the test while the issue is happening. Where practical, test a second destination or run from another network location. Differences can help narrow the affected segment; they do not by themselves establish who is at fault.
  7. Share useful evidence when escalating. Provide the target, time window, number of probes, output, and whether loss continues to the destination.

Why ping and MTR can mislead

These tools measure diagnostic probes, not every application’s traffic. Ping timeouts may occur because diagnostic requests are limited, and filtering can affect MTR’s view: MTR probes may use ICMP or UDP and rely on ICMP Time Exceeded responses to discover the route. Cloudflare discusses timeouts and interpretation in its troubleshooting guidance.

For that reason, an intermediate hop’s missing replies are not equivalent to end-to-end packet loss. Judge them in the context of subsequent hops and the destination. A hop-by-hop pattern can help you decide what to investigate next, but it cannot alone prove whether the cause is your local network, an ISP, a remote network, or the destination itself.

What to compare between two graphs or runs

  • Average and maximum RTT, not just one summary value.
  • Variability or standard deviation, if the tool reports it.
  • Whether loss is confined to intermediate hops or also appears at the destination.
  • Whether the pattern recurs at the same time.
  • Whether both runs came from the same source and followed the same route.

Per-hop output may include packets sent or lost and minimum, mean, and maximum RTT. Cloudflare defines these fields in its API documentation. Treat the values as measurements of that run, rather than as universal thresholds for a healthy connection.
