You can stream to a US audience from another country, but changing your YouTube channel’s country to the United States will not target US viewers. YouTube says location settings are not used to inform recommendations. Instead, make the stream genuinely relevant to the intended audience, present it clearly, and use YouTube Analytics to see whether people in the US are watching.
What actually influences whether US viewers find your stream?
YouTube recommendations are personalized: viewers are more likely to be offered videos related to what they watch and enjoy, and recommendations respond to how viewers engage with content. YouTube explicitly says changing the channel location does not help reach viewers in that country. A US channel setting, your physical location, or a VPN is not a reliable geographic-targeting switch. See YouTube’s Performance FAQ and its explanation of the recommendation system.
Make the stream useful to the audience you want
Build the broadcast for a specific audience rather than merely labeling it “for the US.” Consider whether the topic, language, terminology, schedule, and presentation are useful to those viewers. These choices can make the stream easier for interested people to understand and choose, but they do not guarantee that YouTube will distribute it in a particular country.

Choose a clear title and description that accurately explain what is live and who may find it useful. Set relevant live-stream details in YouTube Studio. Tags have a minimal role in discovery; YouTube says they are mainly useful for common misspellings. See Manage live stream settings.

Set up and run the 24/7 stream
- Check channel eligibility. Verify the channel and confirm it is not currently restricted from live streaming. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Plan the content for the intended audience. Decide what viewers will get from the broadcast and make the language and subject clear in the title and description. Do not treat a country setting or VPN as a substitute for audience fit.
- Schedule the stream and set its details. Use the live-stream settings in YouTube Studio to enter the title, description, and other relevant details. A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, and viewers may opt in for notifications. Scheduling gives existing subscribers a way to plan to join; it is not a promise of US reach.
- Choose an encoder appropriate to the production. YouTube supports encoder streaming. A software encoder may suit a simpler setup; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but says expensive equipment is not required to begin. Hardware is an optional production choice, not a way to target a country. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Test before relying on the broadcast. Check the encoder connection and YouTube preview, then monitor stream health while live. Confirm the stream is reaching YouTube as intended and address warnings before leaving it unattended. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover testing and stream health.
- Secure the rights for every element. Confirm you have the necessary rights to broadcast all video, images, music, and other material worldwide, and comply with applicable laws. A license or permission that covers one region or use may not cover a worldwide live broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions explain the platform’s requirements.
- Plan for the archive limitation. YouTube may not capture a stream that exceeds 12 hours at all. For a continuous 24/7 broadcast, do not assume YouTube will preserve a complete replay. If you need a full archive, keep a separate local recording and consider shorter live sessions where practical. A local recording protects your own archive; it does not change YouTube’s capture limit. See Archive live streams.
Measure whether you are reaching US viewers
Use YouTube Studio’s Analytics > Audience reports to evaluate actual reach rather than inferring it from the channel’s country setting.
Check top geographies
The Top geographies report shows where your channel gets the most watch time. Review whether the United States appears among the leading geographies and whether its share changes as you adjust the content or presentation. The report measures who watched; it does not make YouTube target those viewers. See Understand your YouTube audience.

Use viewer-active times to inform scheduling
The “When your viewers are on YouTube” report uses the last 28 days to show when your viewers are online. Use it as a scheduling clue for your existing audience, not as proof that a particular time will attract US viewers. Compare the schedule with geography and watch-time results as the channel develops.
