First identify what is making the noise: a hard landing at the end of each press, an intentional switch click, a metallic spring ping, a hollow case echo, or one rattling large key. Each has a different remedy. Start with reversible changes, then consider O-rings for bottom-out clack or careful internal damping for case resonance. None is guaranteed to make a keyboard silent.
Identify the sound before changing anything
Listen for when and where the sound occurs. CHERRY’s MX ULP design guideline distinguishes spring vibration from keycap impact, while Logitech’s 2020 white paper notes that large keys can make extra noise because of their balance bars. Those are different problems, not one general “loud keyboard” issue.
- Clack at the end of most key presses: The keycap is striking at bottom-out. A gentler typing style or O-rings may help.
- A sharp click during each press: The switch mechanism itself is making an intentional sound. Bottom-out cushioning may soften the landing, but it will not remove that click.
- Metallic ring or ping: A spring or another internal component may be vibrating. Case damping may help if the sound is amplified by the enclosure, but it is not a universal fix.
- Hollow after-sound: The case may be resonating. A suitable internal damping material is a possible advanced remedy.
- Rattle isolated to the space bar, Enter, or Shift: Inspect that key and its stabilizer before trying to damp the whole case.
Try reversible changes first
Use a lighter touch
If the loudest sound is the landing at the end of each press, try typing without driving every key firmly into its stop. This costs nothing and does not change the keyboard, although it will not silence an intentionally clicky switch.
Check the desk and keyboard feet
Test the keyboard on a stable desk surface and compare the sound with it placed on a desk mat or another suitable cushioned surface. A surface can transmit or amplify vibration, so listen for a change rather than assuming a mat will fix switch noise. CORSAIR’s setup guidance supports only a modest, indirect desk-surface damping suggestion, not a measured reduction.
#1 Best Overall
- Function: The keyboard dampening foam mainly eliminates the noise in the cavity between the PCB and the bottom case
- Material: This sound-depending foam is made of LE-20 Poron material, this is a sound absorber that completely blocks the keyboard from echo noise
- Compatibility: This foam for keyboard has an indentation for easy cutting, suitable for 60/61/64/68/87/104 layout keyboards
- Size:50cm*15cm*0.3cm
- Notice: The size of the keyboard foam dampener is based on most Mechanical keyboards. There may be errors for a small number of mechanical keyboards, but they can be solved by cutting
Use O-rings only for bottom-out clack
Keyboard O-rings fit onto keycap stems and cushion the landing, reducing noise from bottoming out, according to WASD’s O-ring guidance. They are a targeted option when the impact at the end of a press is the main problem—not a treatment for a switch’s click mechanism, spring ping, or every stabilizer rattle. Tom’s Hardware’s tuning guide also discusses O-rings as a keyboard modification.
Expect a feel change: cushioning reduces the effective travel before the key bottoms out, and the altered landing may feel different under your fingers. Check that the rings suit your keycaps and keyboard, install a small number first, and test before fitting the rest. Do not assume a generic ring will fit just because it is rubber.

Consider internal damping only for resonance
If the keyboard sounds hollow or continues to resonate after a press, internal foam or a thin silicone damping sheet may help absorb some of that sound. CHERRY’s MX ULP design guideline describes a silicone mat between the frame and PCBA for that specific design; it is not a universal retrofit specification. Tom’s Hardware likewise emphasizes fitting damping material around the board’s hardware and mounting arrangement.
Opening a keyboard is an advanced, model-dependent step. Before doing so, check the manual and warranty terms, and make sure any material will not obstruct ports, standoffs, wiring, PCB clearance, or the movement of a flexible mount. Material that is too thick can prevent the case from fitting properly or interfere with how the keyboard flexes. Without the exact model and its hot-swap status, there is no safe universal disassembly or switch-work procedure.

Handle a rattling large key separately
If only the space bar, Enter, or Shift rattles, remove and inspect that key only if you know how to do so safely for your keyboard. Clean around the key and inspect its stabilizer, which helps keep a larger keycap level. Logitech’s 2020 white paper describes extra noise from large keys and balance bars in its own keyboard design; Tom’s Hardware explains the stabilizer’s role.
Do not apply lubricant or replace stabilizer parts based on generic instructions alone. The right procedure and compatible parts depend on the keyboard. Consult its manual or model-specific repair guidance before changing the stabilizer.

Choose the least invasive option that matches the sound
| Option | Sound it targets | Effort and reversibility | Fit, feel, and warranty considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighter typing | Hard bottom-out impact | No tools or purchase; immediately reversible | Does not remove switch clicks or spring ping. |
| Desk mat or cushioned surface | Possible desk-transmitted vibration | External and easy to test | Effect depends on the desk and keyboard; does not address the switch mechanism. |
| Keycap O-rings | Bottom-out impact | Low-effort modification; removable | Check fit; changes effective travel and landing feel. Does not eliminate intentional switch click. |
| Internal foam or silicone damping | Hollow case resonance; potentially some amplified vibration | Requires opening the keyboard and careful fitting | Must clear hardware and preserve mount movement; opening the case may affect warranty coverage. |
| Stabilizer inspection or service | Rattle from an individual large key | Model-specific; can require key removal or internal work | Use board-specific guidance before lubrication or part replacement. |
No broadly applicable, independently published decibel reduction is established for user-installed O-rings, foam, or desk mats. A vendor figure for a different product or sound profile would not predict the result on your keyboard.
