In most countries and regions, press and hold the iPhone’s side button and either volume button until the Emergency SOS countdown finishes, then release. Depending on your settings, the iPhone may start a countdown and place the call automatically. If the phone is locked, tap Emergency on the passcode screen and dial your local emergency number.
Call emergency services with the buttons
Apple’s current iPhone User Guide documents these activation methods for most countries and regions. Use the method that is available and familiar to you; button behavior can vary by region and settings. Apple’s Emergency SOS instructions explain the current options.
Hold the side button and a volume button
- Press and hold the side button and either volume button at the same time.
- Keep holding until the Emergency SOS sliders appear and the countdown ends.
- Release the buttons. Depending on your settings, the iPhone begins a countdown and places the call.
Be aware that this can trigger an emergency call; do not try the procedure just to see what happens.
Use five side-button presses
If you enabled Call with 5 Presses in Settings > Emergency SOS, rapidly press the side button five times. This starts a countdown to call emergency services.

India’s documented procedure
In India, Apple documents a different rapid-press method: press the side button three times quickly. Apple also describes the side-and-volume hold option when Accessibility Shortcut is enabled. Follow the instructions for your region rather than assuming the same activation method applies everywhere.
Call from a locked iPhone
- On the passcode screen, tap Emergency.
- Dial the local emergency number.
- Tap the Call button.
For example, 911 is an emergency number in the United States, but the correct number depends on your location. Apple explains the lock-screen procedure in its Emergency SOS instructions.

Which option should you use?

What if the carrier network is unavailable?
When the carrier network is unavailable, iPhone may display SOS and attempt to route emergency calls through other networks if any are available. That does not guarantee a connection: some networks may not accept an emergency call if the iPhone is inactive or incompatible, or, where relevant, has no SIM or a PIN-locked SIM. Ask your carrier whether emergency calls over Wi-Fi are supported. Apple describes these network limitations.
Use satellite SOS when calls cannot connect
On eligible iPhones and in supported regions, Emergency SOS via satellite may be available when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are absent. Apple identifies iPhone 14 or later as the device scope in its Safety Features overview, but availability also depends on location. Check Apple’s current satellite SOS instructions for local eligibility.

- Try calling emergency services first.
- If the call does not go through, tap Emergency Text via Satellite.
- Tap Report Emergency, then follow the onscreen prompts to connect and share information.
A clear view of the sky is important. Heavy foliage and other obstructions can prevent a satellite connection.
Prepare before traveling beyond coverage
If configured, satellite SOS can share your Medical ID and emergency-contact details with responders. Apple also says the session can share your questionnaire answers, location (including elevation), and iPhone battery level. Before going somewhere remote, set up Medical ID and emergency contacts in Health, and consider trying the demo at Settings > Emergency SOS. The demo does not call emergency services. What happens after an emergency call?
After a call, iPhone can text configured emergency contacts unless you cancel the notification. It shares your current location if available, and for a period after SOS mode starts, sends updates if your location changes. Manage those contacts through the Health app. Apple explains the process in its Emergency SOS instructions.
If an emergency call has been made and you don’t need emergency services, don’t hang up. Apple Support advises waiting for a responder and explaining that help is not needed. Follow the same instruction if you accidentally start a satellite SOS session.
