The simplest way to put smart home devices on a separate Wi-Fi network is to use your router’s guest Wi-Fi feature. Give that network its own name and strong password, connect your smart devices to it, and then test the apps, hubs, and controls you rely on. Menu names and isolation behavior vary by router, so check its manual for model-specific directions.

Choose guest Wi-Fi or a separate network

A guest network is usually the easiest starting point if your router offers one. The FTC notes that many routers let you create a guest network with a different name and password, and CISA describes guest Wi-Fi as a simple way to segment a network. Segmentation can reduce communication between groups of devices and may limit malware from spreading between them, but it does not make a network impenetrable.

A separate sub-network or VLAN can offer more configurable separation, but it is a more advanced option and requires router support and model-specific setup. Compare the options by how much control they offer over communication between networks, how difficult they are to configure, and whether your smart-home controls continue to work. Those controls and compatibility vary by equipment.

Approach When it fits Important limit
Guest Wi-Fi You want a relatively simple separate wireless network and your router has a guest-network feature. Isolation and device-to-device behavior vary by router. Test apps and hubs after setup.
Separate sub-network or VLAN Your router supports configurable segmentation and you can follow its instructions. Setup can be more complex; exact support and steps depend on the router.

CISA’s Federal Mobile Workplace Security guidance puts the simple option plainly: “Setting up the segments can be as simple as using the guest WiFi network option available in most routers.”

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Set up a guest Wi-Fi network

  1. Open your router’s controls. Use the router’s app or administrator interface and look for “Guest Wi-Fi,” “Guest Network,” or a similarly named feature. Labels and navigation vary, so use your router manual for the exact path.
  2. Enable guest Wi-Fi. Choose a distinct network name (SSID) and a strong password. Keep your main Wi-Fi credentials private.
  3. Review isolation settings. If the router offers an option to prevent guest devices from reaching the main network or communicating with one another, read its description and enable the behavior that matches your goal. Not all routers provide the same controls.
  4. Connect your smart-home devices. Join each device to the guest network. You may need to change its Wi-Fi settings in the manufacturer’s app; follow the device’s instructions.
  5. Test the features you use. Check app control, hub communication, routines, and local discovery or casting if those matter in your home. A guest network may block local communication that an app or hub expects, and compatibility depends on your router and devices.
  6. Verify the connection. Check the router’s connected-device or wireless-client list and confirm that each device appears on the intended network. See the FTC’s guidance on securing internet-connected devices at home.

Secure the router and both networks

A separate network is one layer of protection, not a replacement for basic router security. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance recommends using WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is unavailable, changing default router administration and Wi-Fi credentials, and keeping router software current. Also check that the router firewall is on. The FTC advises turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP when you do not need them.

Consider separating cameras in particular. The FTC’s home security camera guidance recommends considering a separate network so that a compromise or access on the main network does not automatically provide the same easy access to the cameras. The benefit depends on the router’s actual isolation behavior.

What to do if a device stops working

If a device connects to guest Wi-Fi but an app, hub, routine, or local control stops working, the separation may be blocking communication that feature needs. Check the router manual and the device or hub instructions for network requirements. If the router offers configurable guest isolation, review what it blocks; changing that setting may restore a feature but can reduce separation. Test the behavior you need rather than assuming devices can communicate across networks.
