Google announced two ways to share NotebookLM content: public links for entire notebooks in June 2025, and direct public links for individual Audio Overviews in September 2024. The notebook-sharing instructions Google published in 2025 used Share → “Anyone with a link,” but the account rules in that announcement are historical. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026, and its rename announcement did not say whether sharing eligibility changed.
Notebook sharing and Audio Overview sharing are different features
A public notebook link gives recipients access to the notebook and its generated content. Direct Audio Overview sharing, announced earlier, is for an individual overview. Google described different account restrictions for these features at different times, so do not assume that the same account can use both routes.
| Sharing route | What is shared | Announcement and policy date | Account eligibility stated by Google | What recipients can do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public notebook link | The notebook, including generated content such as Audio Overviews, FAQs, and briefing documents | Announced June 3, 2025; policy update August 1, 2025 | Google’s August 1, 2025 update said public sharing was enabled only for personal accounts; Workspace and Education sharing was restricted to accounts in the same domain. | Ask questions and explore generated content; not edit source content. |
| Audio Overview public link | One Audio Overview | Announced September 26, 2024 | Google said Workspace users could not use this feature at that time. | Open the shared Audio Overview; the announcement does not describe notebook-level access or source-editing permissions for this route. |
Google’s 2025 notebook announcement described the feature this way: “Now, you can share a notebook publicly with anyone using NotebookLM with a single link, whether it’s an overview of your nonprofit’s projects, product manuals for your business or study guides for your class.” Google’s public-notebooks announcement includes the August policy update.
How do I publicly share a NotebookLM notebook?
Google’s June 2025 instructions were to open the notebook’s sharing controls and change access to “Anyone with a link.” The product is now called Gemini Notebook, so labels or availability may differ from those instructions.

- Open the notebook you want to share.
- Select Share in the top-right corner.

- Copy the link and send it only to the intended audience.
Google’s announcement said people opening a public notebook could ask questions and explore generated material, but could not edit the notebook’s source content. Before sharing, review both the sources and generated content for material you do not want recipients to see.
Can anyone with the link open a NotebookLM notebook?
“Anyone with a link” was Google’s public-sharing setting in the 2025 instructions; it should not be read as confirmation of today’s access behavior for every account. Google’s August 1, 2025 update said, “For now, public sharing is enabled only for personal accounts.” It also said, “Sharing for Workspace and Education is restricted to accounts in the same domain.” Those statements describe the policy Google documented on that date, not a verified post-rename eligibility matrix.

Google announced on July 16, 2026, “We’re renaming NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook.” The announcement described it as the same standalone product and said notebooks could be accessed within the Gemini app with cross-app syncing, but did not confirm whether public-sharing eligibility or settings changed. Check the Share panel in your account and, for an organization account, confirm your organization’s current policy before distributing a link. Google’s Gemini Notebook rename announcement.
Can I share an Audio Overview?
Google separately announced direct public-link sharing for Audio Overviews on September 26, 2024. That is distinct from sharing a notebook that happens to contain an Audio Overview. In the 2024 announcement, Product Manager Raiza Martin wrote: “At this time, Workspace users cannot use this feature to share Audio Overviews.” This is the restriction reported at that time; it does not establish the current rule after the product’s rename. What to check before distributing a link
- Confirm that the Share panel actually offers the access setting you intend to use; the published workflow and account rules cited above are from 2025.
- For Workspace or Education accounts, check current organization policy rather than relying on an old public-sharing announcement.
- Review notebook sources and generated material for sensitive information. Under Google’s described public-notebook model, link recipients can interact with generated content even though they cannot edit source content.
- Choose the Audio Overview-specific route only when you intend to share that overview, not the entire notebook.
How widely were public notebooks used at launch?
Google reported that more than 140,000 public notebooks were created in the first four weeks after public sharing launched. That figure is an early uptake snapshot reported in July 2025, not a current total. Google’s July 14, 2025 featured-notebooks post.
