Protect your my Social Security account by starting at SSA.gov, signing in through Login.gov or ID.me, and enabling a multifactor authentication (MFA) method you can reliably use. Ignore unexpected links and requests for money or sensitive information. If you suspect someone used your identity, secure your account and report identity theft to the FTC; report suspected fraud in Social Security or SSI programs to SSA’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG).
Secure your account and sign-in
Start at SSA.gov and use a current sign-in provider
Navigate to the official my Social Security account page yourself instead of following a link in an unexpected text, email, or social-media message. SSA currently uses Login.gov and ID.me for account access. Legacy SSA username sign-in ended June 7, 2025. Either provider can be used to access my Social Security; SSA describes Login.gov as suitable for most users in the United States and ID.me as an option for people inside or outside the United States. Choose based on the account you already use, your location, and which identity-proofing and authentication methods you can complete—not on an assumption that one is inherently more secure. See SSA’s account FAQs and help for current details.
To create an account, SSA says you must be at least 18 and have a valid email address. Follow the official account creation flow to select a provider, sign in or complete its identity verification, and then reach your my Social Security account. SSA requires a unique email address for each customer and discourages sharing an account or email address.
Turn on MFA and plan for phone loss
Enable MFA through your sign-in provider and keep backup access available. A method tied to a phone can be inconvenient if you change numbers or lose the device. SSA lists security keys, landlines, and backup codes among non-mobile options. Before buying a security key or choosing another method, check that your specific provider supports it. SSA’s guidance for accessing an account without a cell phone and its account help describe available alternatives.

Know who can help if sign-in fails
Login.gov or ID.me handles provider-side issues such as password changes, contact details, authentication methods, and identity proofing. SSA can help block or unblock electronic access, deactivate an account, and provide phone identity verification for most users. If locked out, use the provider’s official help channel or SSA’s published contact path from its account help page. Do not trust an unsolicited caller or message that offers to repair access.

For accounts created on or after September 18, 2021, users generally need to contact their sign-in provider to update contact information. A fraud alert on your credit report can also affect identity proofing: SSA says to ask the identity-services provider about removing the alert or arrange an appointment at a local Social Security office; ID.me can be used without removing the alert. Check current provider instructions before changing a credit-file alert. See SSA’s fraud-alert FAQ.
Recognize Social Security impersonation scams
Scammers may pretend to be SSA, invent a problem or prize, create urgency, and insist on a specific payment method. Caller ID can be spoofed, and a scammer may use a real employee’s name or official-looking image. SSA warns that it will not ask for sensitive personal information through social media, email, or text message.

- Threats of arrest, legal action, benefit suspension, or seizure of your account or funds.
- Pressure to move money into a supposedly “protected” bank account, or demands for secrecy.
- Requests for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, prepaid debit cards, gold or other precious metals, or cash sent by mail.
- Unexpected links or attachments asking you to sign in, verify personal information, or make a payment.
Pause rather than respond. Do not click the link or attachment, give out information, or pay. Independently reach SSA through its official website, and report Social Security-related scams to SSA OIG. The OIG page explains common scam tactics and reporting options.
Respond if your account or personal information may be compromised
- Stop contact with the suspected scammer. If money was taken, end the conversation and block the person. SSA recommends reporting the crime to local police and following the FTC’s scam-recovery guidance.
- Secure your sign-in. Use the official SSA entry point and your provider’s official help channel to change exposed passwords, review authentication methods, and address access you do not recognize. If you cannot regain control, contact SSA through its published help path about blocking electronic access or deactivating the account.
- Address identity misuse. If someone may have used your personal information, including your SSN, to get a job or loan, file a tax return, or conduct other business, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. It provides a recovery plan. SSA says identity-theft issues are handled by the FTC, not SSA; see its identity-theft FAQ.
- Consider a credit-file fraud alert. Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion about placing an alert, and follow their current instructions. An alert can affect account identity proofing, so consult the provider or SSA guidance before changing it.
Send the problem to the right agency
Identity theft, suspected program misconduct, and incorrect earnings records are different problems. Use the route that matches what happened:

- Personal Information Protection: there are 4 pieces of address blocker roller stamps in 2 different sizes, and 5 pieces of 1.5 ml inks, a total of 9 pieces. Mainly applied to hide information such as social security numbers, bank statements, billing addresses, shipping addresses, tax documents and so on, protecting your personal information
- Re Inking Unlimitedly: the information blocker stamp can cover information of the length about 100 meters. And each security stamper roller has an oil hole, so you don't have to worry about you having to throw away the roller stamps when the ink runs out. They can be refilled with oil for repeated use, saving time and energy
- Cover Fast: our identity protection rollers come in 2 different sizes, and you can choose different sizes according to different areas of information to cover large amounts of private information in a fast and clean way, avoiding identity theft and rejecting privacy disclosure harassment
- Easy to Use: just remove the lid on the ID stamp blocker roller and open it, and then gently slide it on the place where the information needs to be covered. It is suitable for most ordinary paper with black words, and can protect your personal privacy in time
- Save Time and Energy: compared with the shredder, the personal confidential stamp has a small size, easy to carry, can be applied anytime and anywhere. Compared to the marker, it covers a larger area and can be quickly covered with a single swipe. There is no need to worry about whether you can not protect your privacy in time
| Issue | Where to go | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Someone used your identity or SSN for a job, loan, tax return, or other business | FTC IdentityTheft.gov | Report the identity theft and follow its recovery plan. SSA says it does not handle identity-theft issues. |
| Suspected fraud, waste, or abuse involving Social Security or SSI programs | SSA Office of the Inspector General | Report alleged program misconduct to OIG. SSA’s reporting guidance distinguishes this from personal identity theft. |
| Earnings on your Social Security record that do not belong to you | SSA earnings-correction process | Review your full earnings record and request an online correction if eligible. If you cannot use the online process, contact or visit a local office; some cases may require Form SSA-7008 and supporting documents. |
These routes address different issues: a person’s identity being misused is an FTC matter, alleged misconduct in an SSA or SSI program belongs with OIG, and incorrect earnings should be handled through SSA’s record-correction process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Be cautious with direct-deposit change requests
Protect requests to change where your benefits are deposited as carefully as sign-in credentials. In a March 12, 2025 statement, SSA said approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct-deposit fraud was associated with someone calling SSA to change direct-deposit bank information. SSA also said such changes required either two-factor authentication through my Social Security or in-person identity verification. Treat that percentage as SSA’s published statement for that date, not as a current rate or a prediction about an individual account. Check SSA’s March 2025 notice and current official instructions before making changes.
