Protect your PlayStation Network (PSN) account by using a passkey if your devices support it, or by enabling 2-step verification and saving its backup codes. Use a unique PSN password, secure the email account linked to PlayStation, and never sign in through a link or QR code sent by an unsolicited message. If you spot an account change or sign-in you did not make, use PlayStation’s official recovery or support route promptly.
Choose a safer way to sign in
PlayStation’s current support guidance describes two main approaches: a passkey, or a password combined with 2-step verification (2SV). Which is available depends on your device and account. Use PlayStation Account Management’s Security settings and its current local instructions, since menus and availability can change.

For 2SV, save the backup codes somewhere private and accessible if you lose your phone. PlayStation Support documents 10 codes, each usable once. Do not share the codes with anyone.
Make your password and email harder to take over
Use a different, strong password for PSN and for every other online account. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords, reducing the risk that a password exposed on one service will also unlock another.

Protect the email account linked to PSN with its own strong, unique password and sign-in protections. Someone who can access that inbox may be able to reset passwords on other services, read sensitive messages, or impersonate you. Do not reuse your PSN password for email.
Recognize PSN-themed phishing attempts
A message can look plausible without being legitimate. PlayStation warns about unexpected messages from players or social media that use account problems, rewards, or urgency to get you to reveal information or sign in. Common examples include:

- A supposed beta or tournament invitation that asks you to sign in through a message link.
- A claim that someone accidentally reported your account, followed by an offer to restore it if you share credentials.
- An urgent warning that your account has a problem and you must provide account details to fix it.
- An unsolicited QR code promising vouchers, gift cards, in-game items, or exclusive rewards.
- A website offering free virtual currency in exchange for personal information.
PlayStation Support’s rule is direct: “Never share your account details with anyone else.” Do not enter your password on a page reached through an unsolicited message, and do not scan a QR code sent by a stranger. To check an account issue, navigate to PlayStation through a route you already trust and review the account there. Use only official PlayStation channels or sources you already trust for QR codes and offers.
Protect your account on shared devices and at checkout
- Avoid signing in on internet cafés, libraries, or public PlayStation consoles. If you must use a shared device, sign out when finished; PlayStation also provides a remote sign-out option.
- Set a console login passcode to prevent someone who does not know it from logging in on that console.
- PlayStation offers password protection for Store checkout. This is a purchase safeguard, not a substitute for safe sign-in, and PlayStation says it is not compatible with accounts using passkeys.
Respond quickly to suspicious account activity
You received an unexpected account-change email
If an email says your account details changed and you did not make the change, PlayStation recommends changing the password for the email account first, then following account recovery. Contact PlayStation Support if you cannot change the PSN sign-in method.

You cannot sign in or see an unfamiliar change
If you see an unfamiliar sign-in ID, online ID, or password change, use PlayStation’s Online Assistant. PlayStation’s recovery page also directs you to the Online Assistant if you cannot access the email address on the account, or cannot receive the verification or reset message. Use PlayStation Support’s official recovery route rather than relying on an outside account-recovery service.
Your 2-step verification code is missing
If a code does not arrive, PlayStation suggests resending it, restarting your phone, and checking airplane mode and mobile signal. If the issue continues, contact PlayStation Support. If your phone is unavailable, use a saved one-time backup code. If you have neither the phone nor a backup code, contact support.

Your console was stolen or you see an unrecognized payment
For a stolen console, PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance says to sign out on all devices, deactivate consoles, and consider removing payment methods. If a payment looks unfamiliar, check transaction history and follow PlayStation’s official support and refund guidance.
For suspicious activity, PlayStation Support advises contacting it as soon as possible using the link at the bottom of its support page. Recovery steps and feature availability can vary by region, device, or changes to PlayStation’s interface; use the current support instructions for your location.
