Ask before you capture people, stop the moment someone objects, and stay away from recording in sensitive places. Don’t treat the small LED on the frame as a complete warning to bystanders. On some newer glasses, camera-based AI features can use the camera without that light. This guide uses Ray-Ban Meta as the documented example. Behavior and law vary by model, software version, country and venue.
The short rules for wearing smart glasses in public
- Ask permission before photographing or recording people, especially in conversation or in small gatherings.
- Stop if anyone objects. Meta’s own guidance says: “Respect people’s preferences. Not everyone loves being photographed. Stop recording if anyone expresses that they would rather you not.” (as quoted by AP).
- Avoid sensitive locations and places where people expect privacy. Meta’s guidance says the same.
- Never cover, disable or modify the capture LED.
- Check the venue’s rules and your local law as two separate questions.
- Review the companion app’s privacy and AI settings for your exact model before you go out.
Why the LED is not enough
What the light does
Meta says a white LED blinks when content is captured for the glasses’ gallery, and that its July 2026 FAQ states this light cannot be switched off for gallery capture. Meta also says second-generation glasses disable the camera if the LED is detected as blocked, and describes an update meant to detect physical tampering. These are company descriptions of safeguards. They are not an independent guarantee that a bystander will notice.
Where the light may not apply
Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ says that on newer models, some camera-based AI features, such as asking the glasses to identify a landmark or plant, may run without the LED. It says first-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses still turn the LED on for some of these features because of hardware limitations. So a dark LED does not reliably mean the camera is idle, and you can’t tell a wearer’s setup from the outside. If someone asks whether you are recording, answer honestly, including about AI features.
What regulators have said about design
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, in its 2024 report covering 2023 engagement with Meta, said bystander notice was a concern. It reported that the outward-facing LED was made more than twice its earlier size, a blinking pattern was added during recording, controls were added against accidental recording, and measures were added against tampering. That describes design changes, not a measured improvement in whether people actually notice.

Set up your glasses before you go out
- Identify your generation. Indicator behavior differs between first- and second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses and between capture and AI use.
- Open the companion app (the Meta AI app for Ray-Ban Meta) and review the privacy and AI settings. Controls and data handling can change with software updates, so recheck after updates.
- Know the difference between capture types: gallery photo or video, livestream, and camera-based AI requests. Each has different indicator and data behavior.
- Update the firmware and app so that you have current safeguards.
Where your captures go
Meta says gallery photos and videos stay on the glasses until you import them through its app. After import they sit in your phone’s gallery like any other phone media. Sharing is a further, separate step you control. Meta also says images used for AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history and describes data-use protections. Treat those as company statements. How every AI request or every model handles data isn’t established by them, so read the current model-specific privacy information.
Before sharing anything:
- Check who appears in the frame, including people in the background.
- Crop or remove sensitive details such as faces of children, screens, documents or house numbers where possible.
- Get permission when the people are identifiable and the context is personal.
Places and situations to avoid recording
- Changing rooms, toilets and similar spaces.
- Medical settings.
- Private homes, unless the host has clearly agreed.
- Schools and workplaces, unless there is permission and a valid reason.
- Sensitive conversations. If you are unsure whether the camera or assistant is active, turn the glasses off or take them off.
Law versus venue rules
Public place does not mean anything goes
There is no universal answer that recording in public is always legal or always illegal. A UK government response says people may lawfully use smart glasses in public in line with freedom of expression. It also says that recording people without consent to cause alarm or distress, or for sexual gratification, may amount to offences such as harassment, stalking or voyeurism, and that sharing intimate images without consent is criminal. That is UK-specific and does not settle the rules elsewhere. Check your own country’s or state’s law.

Venues can be stricter
Cinemas, performances, shops and workplaces can set their own rules. AP reported in October 2026 that the UK Cinema Association was introducing restrictions, and that retailers and cinema operators in other countries were restricting or reconsidering smart-glasses use. It also reported that Norway’s government was proposing a temporary ban in some places and that California’s governor had vetoed a bill addressing certain unauthorized recordings. These are reported developments and proposals, not a statement of current law for every reader, and they change quickly. If a venue asks you to remove the glasses or switch them off, comply.
Regulatory scrutiny
The Texas Attorney General announced an investigation and alleged that Meta’s policy describes an “always enabled” mode for processing video for Meta AI. This is an allegation in an investigation announcement, not a finding. It shows that regulators are looking at AI camera use, and not only at photo and video capture.

What not to do
- Don’t cover the LED with tape, paint or stickers. It removes a notice safeguard and, on second-generation glasses, Meta says it disables the camera.
- Don’t rely on the light as consent.
- Don’t assume that being in a public place gives you the right to publish what you captured.
