These controls do different jobs: account settings govern saved activity and some uses of it, while Android permissions limit app access to device resources. Neither makes a Search request anonymous or erases every record with one switch.
Which privacy controls apply to AI search?
Google Search AI Mode is the main example here, but its privacy settings are not one unified control. The relevant surfaces include Google Account activity settings, AI Mode and Search history, Android app permissions, and—if you use it—the Gemini app’s separate activity controls.
- Google Account activity settings: control whether certain Search-service activity is saved to your account and how it may be used under Google’s settings and policies.
- AI Mode history and My Activity: let you review and delete existing Search-related activity. A deletion in one view may not remove related entries in another.
- Android permissions: limit the Google app’s access to device resources such as location, microphone, and camera. They do not delete account activity.
- Gemini Apps Activity: applies to the Gemini app, not as a substitute for Search activity controls.
Google says its newer Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations controls are rolling out gradually. On some accounts, Web & App Activity may still be the applicable Search history control. Use the labels that appear in your own Google Account settings; Google’s activity controls for Search on Android describe the available route.
How do I review Google Search activity settings on Android?
- Open the phone’s Settings app and go to the Google Account management area. Depending on the Android version and manufacturer, this may be under Google or Passwords & accounts, then your Google Account.
- Open Manage your Google Account and select Data & privacy.
- Review the history controls. If Search Services History is available, open it and review its status. If it is not shown, check Web & App Activity instead.
- To stop future activity from being saved under the applicable control, turn it off and follow the confirmation choices shown. Google may offer a choice to turn the setting off alone or turn it off and delete activity; turning it off alone does not delete what was already saved.
These account settings apply across devices signed in to that Google Account. Google’s documentation distinguishes saved activity from the processing needed to provide a Search response, so turning a history control off should not be treated as a promise that a request is anonymous or that all processing stops. What activity gets saved to my account?
When Search Services History is available and enabled, Google says it can save activity across Search services, including searches, information from sites visited with those services, and generative AI responses. Related details may include general location and media associated with interactions. Google groups services such as Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News under these settings. The exact activity available in your account depends on the controls and services you use.
Google describes Search Services History as supporting activity review, personalization, and improvement of generative AI models. A setting being off changes the described saving or use of future activity, but it does not mean Google cannot process a request to return results. Consult Google Search Help’s Search Services History details and the Google Privacy Policy for the applicable explanations.

Save Media is narrower than Search history
If the Search Services History controls appear, review the separate Save Media subsetting. Turning it off stops future Search-service media from being saved to Search Services History; it does not turn off Search Services History itself. Google says previously saved media is not deleted by this change and may continue to be used to improve Google technologies. Text-based history, voice transcripts, and generative AI media responses may still be saved when Save Media is off. To remove existing items, use the applicable history deletion controls rather than relying on the Save Media toggle. See Google’s instructions for managing saved media.
How do I delete AI Mode history?
Google’s Android instructions let you remove an individual AI Mode interaction or all AI Mode history from the AI Mode history view. To delete an interaction, open the Google app, enter AI Mode, open its history, and use the delete control for the interaction you want removed. The exact icon or menu wording can vary as Google updates the interface; follow the controls visible in the app and Google’s AI Mode history instructions.

For a more complete visible cleanup of a particular interaction, check both AI Mode history and My Activity or Search history. Google notes that related items can remain in My Activity for a time, and a query that begins in AI Overview before moving into AI Mode can create separate entries in Search history and AI Mode history. A deletion in one view should not be assumed to remove every related record from the others.
How can Android permissions limit what the Google app can access?
Device permissions are separate from Google Account activity settings. They can restrict the Google app’s access to certain resources, but they do not erase previously saved Search activity or control service retention.

- Open Settings on Android and go to Privacy or Security & privacy, then Privacy Dashboard, to review recent access to sensitive resources such as location, microphone, and camera.
- Open Settings → Apps → Google → Permissions to review access granted to the Google app. Deny permissions you do not need for the features you use.
- For location, choose approximate rather than precise access where Android offers that option and precise location is not needed.
- On supported devices, use the system-wide camera and microphone access toggles if you want to disable those resources across apps.

Yes. Gemini Apps Activity is a separate control set from Search Services History and AI Mode history. If you use the Gemini app, review its activity and connected-app settings independently. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says relevant information may include what you say or share, files and screens, Gemini Live audio or video, connected-app information, device and permission data, and location.

The Gemini app on Android is hosted by the Google app, and Google identifies Google app permissions as the place to manage access to features such as camera, microphone, contacts, and location. Location can also be inferred from an IP address or account Home or Work information; Google says precise location may be provided with permission or received from another Google service to fulfill a request. Turning off Android location access alone therefore does not establish that Gemini cannot infer or receive location information.
Google Safety Center states that Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete is set to 18 months by default and can be adjusted by the user. That figure applies to Gemini Apps Activity, not to Search or AI Mode history. See the Gemini activity settings information. Google’s Android announcement on Gemini Intelligence privacy controls describes safeguards for announced features; do not assume every announced interface or indicator is available on every device.
What settings cannot do
- Turning off a history setting does not itself delete prior activity unless you choose a deletion option or delete it separately.
- Turning off Save Media does not turn off Search history, remove previously saved media, or stop all text-based history from being saved.
- Android permissions limit app access to device resources; they do not govern account history or service retention.
- Search, AI Mode, Gemini Apps Activity, Android permissions, and browser history are distinct control surfaces, not one universal privacy switch.
To reduce exposure at the point of use, avoid submitting private documents, sensitive images, or identifying details to an AI search feature unless you understand the relevant service controls and data practices. Settings can reduce some saved activity or device access; they should not be treated as a guarantee that a query is never processed.
