Protect your wearable privacy by checking what the device, companion app and connected services collect; turning off features you do not use; limiting app and people-based sharing; securing your account; and using export or deletion controls deliberately. Do not assume HIPAA covers data in a consumer wearable app: the rules that apply depend on the organization and how the data flows.

Understand where your wearable data goes

A health-tracking wearable usually involves more than the device itself. Data may pass from the tracker to a phone app, an account or cloud service, and other apps, providers or people you have authorized. Privacy settings in one place may not govern every copy or recipient.

The information involved depends on the product and your settings. Google says possible categories include steps, distance, calories, weight, heart rate, sleep stages, active minutes, data from connected services, location for some features, and usage or diagnostic information. Its Google Health privacy FAQ notes that practices vary by device, service and configuration.

Before changing settings, make a quick map of your data path: identify the wearable, its companion app and account, then check for connected apps, healthcare providers, coaching services, and people with whom you share information. Pay particular attention to location, medical-record connections, cycle or sleep tracking, and coaching features.

Review app permissions by data type

Check which apps can read or write health information and whether each permission is needed for a feature you actually use. Grant the smallest useful set of categories, and revoke access that is no longer necessary. A connected app may have access even if you rarely open it.

On Apple devices

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Health to review and change app-level access. Apple says Health data is not shared with third-party apps by default; users can grant access by data type and revoke it later. See Apple’s Health and Fitness Apps Privacy Overview (September 2025) and Health App & Privacy.

For other platforms

Look in the wearable app’s privacy, health-data or connected-app settings for a list of permissions and recipients. Review both read and write access where offered: an app that can add data to a health record may pose a different concern from one that can only read it. Menu labels vary across products and can change.

Turn off features and location access you do not need

Optional features can involve additional collection or processing. Read the feature’s explanation before enabling it, then disable features you do not use. Review location permission separately: some functions may need location, but that does not mean the entire app needs ongoing access. Google says precise location collection depends on granted access for select features; the details vary by service and configuration.

On a phone, use its app-permission settings to limit location access to the level the feature requires, or deny it if you do not use location-based functions. Recheck after enabling a new feature, because its permission needs may differ from those of basic activity tracking.

Secure your account and check every sharing path

  • Use a unique, strong password for the wearable account; avoid reusing a password from another service.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication or two-step authentication if the service offers it. Google says two-step authentication is available for Fitbit accounts.
  • Review sharing with people, apps and healthcare organizations, and remove recipients you no longer want to have access.
  • Check connected services as well as the wearable app. Revoking access in one app may not remove information already received elsewhere.

Apple lets users review and stop sharing with selected people and apps. Google states that it will not use Fitbit users’ health and wellness data for Google Ads; this is Google’s stated policy, not an independent audit or a claim that no other processing takes place. See Google Health & Data Privacy (Fitbit).

Export or delete data with copies in mind

If you want a personal copy, use the service’s export controls before deleting data or closing an account. If you choose to delete, follow the service’s deletion or account-deletion process and check connected apps, backups and recipients: deleting data in one place may not erase copies held elsewhere.

Removing a phone app is not the same as deleting data associated with its account. Apple says deleting the Health app does not delete health data from the device or automatically remove access previously shared with apps or recipients. Apple also describes export, deletion, and optional iCloud backup or syncing in its Health App & Privacy notice. Encryption and cloud handling depend on device state, settings and account configuration; Apple says Health app data is encrypted when the device is locked.

Google provides export and deletion controls in its Google Health & Data Privacy (Fitbit) information. Review the controls for the specific account and service you use, and treat connected apps and backups as separate places to check.

Do not treat HIPAA as a blanket wearable privacy guarantee

Whether HIPAA applies to information from a consumer wearable depends on the organization handling it and the data flow; it does not automatically cover every wearable app or account. In the United States, the FTC identifies HIPAA, the FTC Act and the Health Breach Notification Rule as relevant parts of the health-privacy landscape. Some apps outside HIPAA may still be subject to the Health Breach Notification Rule when they draw information from multiple sources, including a connected tracker, but whether the rule applies depends on specific facts. The FTC’s Health Privacy guidance and Mobile Health App Interactive Tool provide general U.S. context, not a legal determination about a particular service.
