You can reduce some of the information connected to an abortion-care search, but no browser setting or single tool can make it invisible. Search engines, websites, apps, shared devices, and health-care providers may each hold different information. Start by limiting identifying details, checking which accounts and services you use, and reviewing the privacy notice of any care site you visit.
Know which parts of a search can leave a record
Searching for care can involve several separate data trails. A search provider may retain queries; a care website may record pages viewed or interactions; a phone or app may provide location information; and messages or health records may be stored by other services. Who can access each record depends on the service, device, settings, and applicable law. Changing one setting does not erase information already held elsewhere.
- Search activity: Queries may be retained by a search provider. Signing in can associate activity with an account or related services. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) describes these risks in its search-privacy guidance.
- Website activity: A care-related site may collect information such as pages viewed, clicks, browsing behavior, IP-derived general location, and interactions involving analytics or advertising. Its privacy notice—not another organization’s policy—is the place to check its practices.
- Location: A phone or app with location access may provide location information. Turning off an app’s access does not remove other location records or prevent every kind of location inference.
- Device and account access: Saved history, notifications, messages, and shared accounts may expose activity to someone with access to the device or account.
- Health records: A provider’s handling of clinical information is distinct from what a search engine or website collects.
EFF’s 2025 transition memo discusses location data, browsing history, chat logs, and electronic health records as distinct reproductive-privacy concerns. These are possible exposure paths, not evidence that a particular organization has a particular person’s information.

Reduce identifying details before you search
Keep personal information out of queries
Search with general terms rather than adding your name, address, phone number, or other identifying details. EFF specifically advises against putting personally identifying information in search terms. A query that includes those details is easier to connect to you than a general search.

Check whether you are signed in
Before searching, consider whether you are signed in to the search provider or a related account. Signing in can link activity to an account; the exact implications depend on the provider’s current practices. Review the provider’s current privacy information and account settings rather than relying on old service-specific directions.
Consider who can see the device or account
If you share a device or account, consider whether another person can access browser history, notifications, or messages. Choose settings and a device you can use safely; do not assume that deleting a visible history entry removes records held by a provider or other service.

Check the care site’s privacy notice before sharing information
Before entering personal details, look for the site’s current privacy notice. Check what information it says it collects, whether it uses cookies or analytics, whether advertising or other third parties are involved, and how it describes legal disclosures. If a specific practice matters to you, ask the organization directly.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) publishes a notice describing its own online services and data practices. It is an example of the kinds of details a notice may address, not a statement about every local Planned Parenthood affiliate, clinic, referral service, or care-navigation site.

Review cookie controls with the site in mind
Browsers commonly offer cookie controls, and a site may also provide its own choices. PPFA’s notice says disabling cookies may affect some site features. Review the available settings and consider the trade-off between limiting some cookie use and the possibility that parts of the site may not work as intended.
Limit app location access when it is not needed
Review which apps have location permission and whether an app needs that access for the task you are doing. EFF identifies location information from phones and apps as a reproductive-privacy concern. Restricting an app’s permission can reduce that route of collection, but it does not undo information already collected or prevent all ways of estimating location.

Understand what HIPAA does—and does not—tell you
HIPAA does not automatically cover every search, app, website, or company that handles information related to abortion care. Whether HIPAA applies depends on the organization and the information involved. A website privacy notice describes online data practices; a provider’s health-record handling is a separate question. If coverage or disclosure practices matter to your decision, ask the provider how it handles the specific information you plan to share.

That distinction is a reason not to assume that every health-related record receives the same legal protection.

EFF’s 2025 memo discusses a HIPAA Privacy Rule amendment that took effect on June 25, 2024, concerning certain uses or disclosures of reproductive-health information by covered entities. The memo is not a substitute for current official guidance or advice about how a rule applies in a particular location or situation. For legal questions involving your location, age, or circumstances, contact qualified local legal support or a trusted care-navigation organization.
Put the steps together
- Before searching: Leave identifying details out of queries and check whether you are signed in to a search or related account.
- Before visiting or contacting a service: Read its current privacy notice and decide what information you are comfortable entering or sharing.
- On your device: Review browser cookie controls, app location permissions, and who can access your account, history, notifications, and messages.
- When discussing care: Ask the provider about its current handling of the specific information involved if you need a clearer answer than its online notice provides.
- For legal concerns: Seek qualified local support rather than relying on a general privacy checklist to answer a jurisdiction-specific question.
What these precautions cannot guarantee
These steps can reduce some collection or make some activity less directly linked to an account, but they cannot guarantee anonymity. Private browsing, a VPN, or any other single tool should not be treated as making a search invisible or erasing records held by a provider, website, app, or other party.
EFF’s search-privacy guidance cites AOL’s August 2006 publication of 650,000 users’ search histories as a historical example of search records becoming public. That episode is not a current measurement of provider retention or the likelihood that a present-day search will be exposed.
