Protect against ClickFix by making command-pasting requests an unmistakable warning sign, limiting unnecessary access to command tools, protecting the web and email routes that deliver lures, and collecting the endpoint and network telemetry needed to investigate execution. No single awareness reminder or security product covers every stage.
What makes ClickFix different?
ClickFix is a social-engineering technique that persuades a person to copy and run an attacker-supplied command. A deceptive webpage, pop-up, or message may pose as a browser error, software fix, or CAPTCHA challenge. It can tell the user to open a trusted system tool—such as Windows Run, PowerShell, Windows Terminal, or a macOS shell—and paste a command there.
The common sequence is simple: someone reaches a lure, follows its supposed repair or verification steps, pastes or types a command into an operating-system tool, and executes it. The command can then launch a script or payload. Because the user starts the action through a trusted interface, defenses focused only on malicious attachments or downloaded files may miss activity that began this way.
ClickFix has been delivered through phishing, malvertising, and compromised websites. Treat it as a cross-channel risk, not just an email-filtering problem. Depending on the campaign, the resulting activity may involve credential or information theft, data exfiltration, remote access, additional malware, or lateral movement; the specific payload and impact vary.

What should employees do if a site asks them to paste a command?
Tell employees not to paste or run the command. A legitimate website should not ask them to use Run, PowerShell, Terminal, or a shell to pass a CAPTCHA, prove they are human, or repair a browser. The page may look familiar or convincing; the command request itself is the warning sign.
- Stop interacting with the prompt. Do not copy the command, open the requested tool, or run anything it provides.
- Use the organization’s designated security-reporting channel. Include the page or message, how it was reached, and a screenshot if policy permits.
- If the prompt appeared while doing a work task, contact the organization’s approved IT or security support route rather than following the page’s instructions.
Make this guidance specific in onboarding and recurring awareness material: explain the exact tools and actions to watch for, how to report the prompt, and where to get help. Microsoft Threat Intelligence recommends educating users to identify social engineering and understand what they copy and paste. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) likewise advises watching for fake CAPTCHA or “Fix It” prompts and unexpected Run-dialog instructions.

How can an organization reduce risky command execution?
First identify which teams and roles genuinely need command interpreters, scripting tools, and the Windows Run dialog for their work. Apply restrictions where they are practical for standard users, and use application control or allowlisting to limit which binaries and scripts can run and in what context. Preserve an approved administrative path for legitimate work.
Microsoft’s mitigation guidance discusses disabling Run where it is not needed, restricting native binaries launched from Run, warning about multi-line pastes in Windows Terminal, and enabling PowerShell script-block logging. The Center for Internet Security (CIS) also describes PowerShell restrictions, Windows Defender Application Control, and application allowlisting. These are options to assess against your environment, not blanket settings to apply without testing: restrictions can disrupt legitimate workflows. Pilot policies with affected teams and keep an authorized route for administration.

Which layers of protection should cover delivery and execution?
Use complementary controls at the points where ClickFix activity can enter and run. The following comparison describes what each layer can contribute; none is a stand-alone guarantee.
| Control layer | What it can cover | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Email and link protection | Filtering for spoofed, spam, or malware messages; link rechecking where available. | Useful for email-delivered lures, but it does not cover every route, including malvertising or compromised websites. |
| Web, browser, and network protection | Managed browsing and protections that block malicious sites or connections. | Complements email controls; assess how it fits legitimate browsing and business access. |
| Execution restrictions and application control | Limits access to command tools or constrains which binaries and scripts can execute. | Can reduce execution opportunities, but policies need testing and a supported administrative path. |
| Endpoint detection and response (EDR) | Can provide visibility into endpoint activity and help detect suspicious execution. | Do not treat EDR as proof that a user-executed command cannot succeed; Microsoft’s observations include ClickFix commands executed on devices with EDR enabled. |
| Centralized logging and monitoring | Combines endpoint process, command-line, script, and network signals for alerting and investigation. | Requires useful data collection, alert ownership, and a defined triage process. |
Maintain endpoint protection and current software alongside these controls. When comparing products or policies, evaluate which stage and execution route they cover, what process, command-line, script, and network behavior they expose, how they affect legitimate workflows, and the effort needed to deploy and maintain them. The cited guidance does not establish a head-to-head efficacy ranking or support claims of complete prevention.

What telemetry helps detect or investigate a command someone ran?
Centralize endpoint process and command-line data, PowerShell script-block or other relevant logs, and network-connection telemetry. Alert on suspicious scripting activity and unexpected outbound connections. Assign an owner to each alert type and document how analysts should triage it. Singapore CSA recommends SIEM logging, asset visibility, continuous monitoring, and detecting anomalous connections and malicious PowerShell commands.
On Windows, the RunMRU registry key may retain commands entered through Run and can provide an investigative lead. Microsoft notes that failed process executions do not create a RunMRU entry, so absence of an entry does not establish that no attempt occurred. Treat it as one incomplete artifact, alongside process, script, endpoint, and network evidence.

What should security teams do after suspected execution?
If someone followed the instructions and ran a command, start the organization’s incident process promptly. The potential consequences include stolen credentials, data exfiltration, remote access, secondary payloads, and lateral movement; the precise activity must be established from evidence.
- Open an incident and establish the timeline. Ask what the user saw, where the prompt appeared, which tool they opened, and what they did. Record relevant times and preserve the original message or page details when available.
- Preserve evidence. Collect available endpoint process and command-line records, relevant PowerShell or other script logs, network telemetry, and applicable RunMRU artifacts before routine retention or cleanup removes them.
- Determine scope. Identify the device and account involved, what executed, whether further activity followed, and whether related identities or systems show suspicious activity.
- Contain and recover under established procedures. Use the organization’s incident-response plan to decide how to limit exposure, protect affected identities and devices, and restore normal operations.
- Review and improve. Use the incident to identify which delivery, execution, or detection layer failed to prevent or surface activity, then adjust controls and user guidance accordingly.
These are response priorities, not a universal technical playbook. Coordinate containment, evidence handling, and recovery with your established procedures and incident responders.
What do the reported ClickFix figures show?
Microsoft Threat Intelligence and Microsoft Defender Experts reported observing campaigns affecting “thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day” over the prior year in an article dated August 21, 2025. That is Microsoft’s observation of campaign activity, not an independently measured global incidence rate. The same article said Microsoft Defender Experts observed thousands of devices with a ClickFix command executed per month in early 2025 despite EDR being enabled; this describes Microsoft’s observed devices, not an effectiveness rate for all EDR products or organizations.
In a separate October 27, 2025 article, the CIS Cyber Threat Intelligence team said ClickFix accounted for “over a third” of non-malware Albert Network Monitoring and Management alerts in its first-half 2025 observations. That share applies to that monitoring dataset, not to all cyberattacks. These figures illustrate activity seen by particular organizations and monitoring systems; they should not be read as comparable measures of overall prevalence or product performance.
