Why mailed checks are vulnerable
A stolen check can be altered through “check washing”—criminals may change the payee name and sometimes the amount—or copied. A check can also be deposited without being altered, so prevention and account monitoring both matter. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) explains the risk in its Check Washing guidance.
USPIS says it recovers more than $1 billion in counterfeit checks and money orders each year. That figure is about recovered counterfeit checks and money orders, not the total value of check theft.
Protect checks arriving in your mailbox
Collect mail promptly
Pick up mail as soon as you can, and do not leave it in your mailbox overnight. The less time a check sits unattended, the less opportunity there is for someone to take it. If a check or other valuable mail you expect does not arrive, contact the sender promptly. See USPIS mail and package theft guidance.

Plan for time away
When you travel, arrange for a trusted friend or neighbor to collect your mail, or use USPS Hold Mail. Informed Delivery can send daily email notifications about incoming mail and packages, helping you notice when expected mail is missing. It is an awareness aid, not proof of delivery or a physical security measure. Availability and service details may vary.
Send checks with less exposure
Choose the drop-off and timing carefully
USPIS advises mailing before the last pickup from a blue collection box or taking mail to a local Post Office. Joint consumer guidance from USPIS and the American Bankers Association recommends using letter slots inside the Post Office. These choices can reduce the time a check sits unattended, but no mail drop-off method is guaranteed theft-proof.

Consider alternatives and confirm delivery
Where the recipient accepts them, electronic, mobile, e-check, or ACH payments avoid sending a paper check through the mail. If you do mail a check, follow up with the payee to confirm it arrived. A security envelope may conceal the contents from view, but it cannot prevent theft if the envelope is intercepted.
Make checks harder to alter and monitor payments
Fill out the check carefully
- Use indelible black ink; USPIS and the ABA say it makes check washing more difficult.
- Do not leave blank spaces in the payee or amount lines that could be filled in later.
- Do not write unnecessary personal information on a check, such as your Social Security number, credit-card details, driver’s-license number, or phone number.
Review cleared checks
Check your bank activity and statements regularly. If your bank provides images of paid checks, inspect the front for changes to the payee or amount and the back for an endorsement that does not match the intended payee. Bank alerts and image access vary by institution; enable useful notifications if available.

What to do if a check is missing or altered
- Contact your bank immediately. Explain what happened and ask it to review the transaction and provide copies of fraudulent checks, if applicable.
- Report the theft. Contact local police and file a report with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at uspis.gov/report or by phone at 1-877-876-2455. If a crime is actively in progress, call 911.
- Preserve details. Keep available check images and transaction information. Tell the bank and USPIS how, when, and where you mailed the check, if known.
- Follow up with the intended recipient. Confirm whether the check arrived and coordinate on a replacement or alternative payment with the sender or payee and your bank.
How common is mail theft?
USPIS reports that almost 9,300 suspects were arrested for theft of mail and packages from 2019 through 2024. That total covers mail and package theft broadly, not check theft alone. Separately, its Project Safe Delivery totals list 3,960 mail-theft arrests and 572 robbery arrests nationwide from May 12, 2023 through June 30, 2026.
