Danish authorities say unauthorized parties accessed information about 8.8 million people in the CPR system. The access was closed, and the case was under investigation according to the government notice. Exposure does not prove that your identity has been misused. Be alert for personalized scams, verify unexpected contact independently, and consider a CPR credit warning if you have concrete reason to suspect misuse.
What happened in Denmark’s CPR breach
On 5 October 2026, Sikkerdigital.dk reported that unauthorized parties had accessed names, addresses, CPR numbers and other data through CPR. A Borger.dk notice on the Rigspolitiet page said information about 8.8 million people in the CPR system had been accessed, that the unauthorized access was closed, and that the case was being investigated. The notice does not state that every affected person’s record contained the same information or provide a field-by-field breakdown. What to do now
- Be cautious of tailored messages and calls. A scammer may use personal details to make an approach sound credible. An exposed CPR number alone does not mean someone has accessed your accounts or committed identity fraud.
- Do not use links in unexpected messages. Go to the organization’s official website yourself, or call its published main number. Caller ID can be spoofed, so a familiar number on your screen does not prove that a call is genuine.
- Never give credentials or codes in response to unsolicited contact. Do not disclose MitID credentials, one-time codes, passwords, CPR information or payment-card details. Borger.dk says banks and public authorities will not ask for CPR numbers, MitID or login information unsolicited by email, message or phone. - Consider a CPR credit warning if you suspect misuse. The warning is an optional marker in CPR intended to prompt extra care when credit is considered in your name. It is not a guaranteed block; the details are below.
- Check for signs of identity misuse. Be alert for unfamiliar bills, collection demands or other financial correspondence. Contact the named company using independently verified contact details, not information in a suspicious message.
- Get help if information or MitID may have been stolen. The incident guidance lists Cyberhotline for digital security at 33 37 00 37. Its hours were temporarily extended to 08:00–24:00 “in the coming days” in the incident notice; check the official hotline page for current hours. If you think your MitID is compromised, follow the official MitID blocking instructions.
How a CPR credit warning works
The Danish term is kreditadvarsel. It is an optional marker in CPR that warns against granting loans or credit in your name. Companies with a legitimate interest may be informed by CPR-kontoret, and the warning signals that they should pay particular attention to identity checks. Companies choose whether to receive the information, and many need to adapt their IT systems before they can access it. The official guidance says the effect is expected to grow as systems are adapted, so it should not be treated as a universal credit freeze. Read CPR-kontoret’s credit-warning guidance.
When it may make sense
The incident guidance recommends considering a warning when there is concrete suspicion that your CPR information is being misused. The broader official guidance also identifies a lost passport or driving licence, or previous identity fraud, as reasons someone may want to add one.

Add or remove the warning
You must be at least 15 to add or remove the marker. Use the official self-service linked from the credit-warning guidance; if you cannot use it, ask your municipal Citizen Service (Borgerservice) for help, generally by appointment. A marker can make legitimate loans or credit harder to obtain. You can remove it before applying and add it again afterward.

How to recognize and verify a scam
Fraudsters may pose as a bank or public authority and try to create urgency. Warning signs in email include a demand for personal details, a suspicious link, an unfamiliar sender address, pressure to act quickly, or contact from a company you do not deal with. Text-message threads can be spoofed, and phone numbers can be manipulated to appear legitimate. Pause and contact the organization through details you find independently. Sikkerdigital.dk’s instruction is: “Hvis du modtager uventede sms’er eller mails med links, så klik ikke, men gå selv ind via den officielle hjemmeside – eller ring til afsenderens hovednummer og dobbelttjek.” Borger.dk’s identity-theft guidance and phishing guidance explain further warning signs.

Can you get a new CPR number?
A new CPR number is possible only in special cases involving identity misuse and subject to requirements. The official guidance does not say that exposure in this incident alone makes someone eligible. If identity misuse has actually occurred, contact the CPR authorities to ask whether your circumstances meet the requirements. See the official CPR guidance.
