If your financial institution reports a cyberattack, first verify the notice through the institution’s official app or website, or call a number you already trust. Ask what information and accounts may be affected. Then secure relevant access, review transactions, and report anything suspicious promptly. This guide covers U.S. consumer steps; rights and credit-report systems differ in other countries. A cyberattack announcement alone does not establish that your particular account, password, balance, or Social Security number was exposed.

Verify the notice through a trusted channel

Do not click an unexpected email or text link, or call a number in an unsolicited message, until you have independently checked it. Scammers may impersonate financial institutions and government agencies, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

  1. Open the institution’s official app, or type its known website address into your browser.
  2. Alternatively, call the number printed on your bank card or statement.
  3. Ask the fraud or security team whether the notice is genuine, what categories of information were involved, which accounts or cards may be affected, and what steps the institution has already taken or recommends.
  4. Write down the date, the person or department you spoke with, and any case number.

The institution’s verified notice and its fraud team are the best sources for incident-specific instructions. The appropriate response depends on what was exposed and which accounts are involved.

Match your response to the information at risk

Use the institution’s confirmed information to decide what to change. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov’s guidance for information exposed in a breach; it tailors steps to the type of information involved.

Information that may be exposed Practical response
Password or sign-in credential Change it through the official app or website. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Use any additional security options the institution actually offers, checking its official settings or asking its support team rather than assuming a particular feature is available.
Card number or card credentials Contact the issuer and ask whether to lock, cancel, or replace the card. Follow its instructions; replacement is not automatically necessary after every cyberattack.
Bank account number Contact the bank and ask what monitoring or account changes it recommends for your situation.
Social Security number or other identity information Use IdentityTheft.gov’s breach guidance and consider credit-file protections. If you find evidence of identity theft, report it there and follow the recovery plan.

Review account activity and report anything suspicious

Check checking and savings accounts, debit cards, and credit cards for unfamiliar transactions, including small charges or debits. Contact the relevant bank or card provider promptly if something looks wrong. Ask whether a potentially compromised card should be canceled and replaced; CFPB guidance also says changing the PIN may be worth considering when card information is compromised (credit card information guidance).

Keep checking after the initial announcement. The CFPB’s 2014 consumer advisory warns: “Fraudulent charges may occur many months after information is stolen.” Its more recent data-breach guidance also advises continued monitoring.

Guard Your ID Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp, 3-Pack for Mail
  • WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
  • HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
  • DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
  • IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
  • SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.

Report unauthorized activity as soon as you notice it. Deadlines and liability rules depend on the type of account and transaction, and on when you notify the institution; debit-card and credit-card protections are not interchangeable. Ask your bank or card provider how to dispute the specific transaction and consult the CFPB’s bank-account error guidance or credit-card error guidance. Do not assume a universal reporting deadline or guaranteed reimbursement.

Use credit-file protections if identity information may be exposed

A credit freeze and a fraud alert address certain kinds of new-credit identity theft; neither protects money already held in an existing bank account. Continue contacting your bank about account access and transactions.

Protection What it does What you need to do
Credit freeze Restricts access to your credit file for most new-credit decisions. It does not stop withdrawals from an existing deposit account. It is free, but you must request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. See the CFPB’s credit-freeze guidance.
Fraud alert Asks prospective creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before opening or changing credit accounts. It does not block access to your credit report in the way a freeze does. See the CFPB’s fraud-alert guidance. It does not replace reporting suspicious bank activity.

If you see signs of identity theft, report them at IdentityTheft.gov and use the recovery plan it provides. Notify the relevant financial institution as well.

Keep records and assess any help the institution offers

Save the incident notice and keep copies of letters, disputed-transaction forms, and other correspondence. Record whom you spoke with, when you called, any case number, and what the institution said it would do. CFPB guidance recommends keeping records of follow-up communications (consumer guidance on protecting finances and credit after a data breach).
